Android’s camera and microphone privacy controls are not a universal setting in Developer options. On supported devices running Android 12 or later, separate controls in Quick Settings or the Privacy screen can block all apps from receiving camera or microphone input.
Where to find Android’s camera and microphone controls
On a supported Android 12-or-later device, open Quick Settings and look for the Camera access and Mic access tiles. You can also find the controls through the Privacy screen in Settings. Exact labels, tile availability and menu paths may vary by device; Android’s guidance does not provide a complete list of supported models. Android Developers explains the supported-device controls.
- Open Quick Settings by swiping down from the top of the screen. If needed, swipe down again to see more tiles.
- Tap Camera access to block or allow camera access for apps.
- Tap Mic access separately to block or allow microphone access for apps.
- If the tiles are not available, open Settings and look for the controls on the Privacy screen.
These are distinct controls: turning off camera access does not, by itself, turn off microphone access.
What happens when access is turned off
Android does not necessarily make an app display an error or close. With camera access disabled, an app receives a blank camera feed; with microphone access disabled, it receives silent audio. Android also turns microphone access on when you place an emergency-services call. Its developer guidance notes that disabling microphone access rate-limits motion-sensor data for apps; that does not mean the toggle disables every sensor.

Why this is not a Developer options setting
Developer options are system controls intended for tasks such as profiling and debugging apps. Android’s documentation does not identify the camera and microphone privacy controls as developer settings or developer Quick Settings tiles. Enabling Developer options is therefore not a general way to reveal these privacy controls.
On Android 4.2 and later, the documented way to enable Developer options is to tap Build number seven times. The screen’s location or name can differ by device. That procedure is unrelated to the device-wide camera and microphone controls. Android’s documentation also describes adding available developer tiles to Quick Settings, but does not equate those tiles with the camera and microphone access controls. Device-wide controls versus app permissions
The Quick Settings and Privacy controls apply across apps for the relevant input type. Per-app permissions work differently: they let you manage access for an individual app. Android 11 introduced an Only this time choice for an app requesting location, microphone or camera access. A temporary permission for one app is not the same as blocking that input across the device. Android’s Android 11 permissions guidance describes the one-time option.

If a camera or mic tile is missing
- Check the Privacy screen in Settings as well as the expanded Quick Settings panel.
- Confirm your device supports the Android 12-or-later controls. Android’s published guidance limits availability to supported devices and does not enumerate every model.
- Do not assume that turning on Developer options will add the controls; Android’s documentation does not say that it will.
