There is no universal pair of Android toggles proven to cause overnight battery drain. Start by checking Battery usage for the hours the phone was idle; then review apps with background activity. If your phone has Mobile data always active or Wi-Fi scanning, treat either as a reversible, device-specific test—not a guaranteed fix.
Find what used battery overnight
Before changing settings, note the battery level at bedtime and again in the morning. Keep conditions reasonably similar—such as whether the phone is on Wi-Fi and whether it is charging—so the comparison is useful. Then open the phone’s Battery or Battery usage screen and select the overnight period if your device offers that option.
Look for apps or system components that used charge while the screen was off. Google’s Pixel troubleshooting guidance recommends reviewing battery use and app background activity; menu labels and available details vary by Android version and manufacturer. - If location use appears unusually high, review which apps have background location access. Android notes that background location can significantly affect battery life: About background location and battery life.
- If no app or setting is an obvious outlier, consider context such as weak cellular reception, syncing, recent setup or updates, or battery condition rather than assuming a particular toggle is responsible.
Review app background use before changing connectivity
For apps that do not need to work while you are away from them, review their background-use or battery permissions in Settings. The exact path and labels differ by handset. Restricting background activity may delay syncing or notifications, so leave essential messaging, safety, and other time-sensitive apps configured for the behavior you need.

On Pixel phones, Google advises keeping Adaptive Battery and battery optimization on. Turning off battery optimization for an app can allow it to run more while unused. Read Google’s guidance on Adaptive Battery and battery optimization before overriding an app’s optimization.
What “Mobile data always active” does
Some Android phones expose Mobile data always active in Developer options. Android Open Source Project Settings describes it as: “Always keep mobile data active, even when Wi‑Fi is active (for fast network switching).” The purpose is faster network switching, not battery saving.

If your phone offers the option, you can test turning it off, but the available evidence does not establish that it causes overnight drain on every device—or that disabling it will save charge. It may make network handoffs less immediate. A commonly reported path is Settings > System > Developer options > Mobile data always active; manufacturers may use a different path, and Developer options may not be enabled. The setting’s description is in the Android Open Source Project Settings strings.

Wi-Fi scanning can let a phone search for nearby networks in the background, and some consumer reporting identifies it as a setting worth checking. Its availability, location in Settings, and effect on battery life vary. It is not established as the cause of any particular phone’s overnight drain. If you find the option, change it only as a test and note any effect on features that rely on scanning.

Do not turn off location, connectivity, or battery optimization wholesale based on a general tip. Android’s own battery guidance also points readers to display brightness, background apps, connectivity, and location as factors to review: How to save battery life and stop it from draining. - Record the battery level at bedtime and in the morning, along with relevant conditions such as Wi-Fi use.
- Check Battery usage for the same overnight interval and identify any app or system component that stands out.
- Review that app’s background permissions and recent activity; preserve background access for apps whose notifications or work you need.
- If you choose to test a connectivity or scanning toggle, change only one setting and keep the test conditions similar on another night.
- Compare the Battery usage screen and morning level. Restore the setting if you notice an unwanted impact or no useful improvement.
Doze can defer background CPU and network activity when a device is unused for long periods, but that general Android behavior does not identify what drained a specific phone. Android explains it in Optimize for Doze and App Standby.
