Apple CarPlay is the stronger choice if customization means changing what the car screen looks like. Apple documents controls for rearranging eligible app icons, hiding or restoring some icons, changing wallpaper and appearance, toggling Dashboard suggestions and album art, and adding or reordering widgets. Google’s Android Auto documentation focuses on the launcher, dashboard, quick controls, dark theme, and phone-level accessibility settings such as bold or outlined text and reduced animations.
That feature advantage is not the same as a proven ease-of-use advantage. Neither platform’s official help documentation provides a head-to-head usability test, setup-time comparison, or universal winner. The practical choice depends on whether you want layout and widget controls or mainly clearer text, a dark interface, and quick access to compatible apps.
What “customize” means in this comparison
Customization can refer to several different things, and the answer changes depending on which one matters to you:
- Layout: changing the order of icons, pages, widgets, or shortcuts on the projected car display.
- Appearance: changing wallpaper, color treatment, dark mode, album-art display, text weight, or animation.
- Information density: deciding which glanceable cards or suggestions appear while driving.
- App selection: installing compatible music, messaging, news, navigation, or other services.
- Phone personalization: changing your phone’s home screen or accessibility settings, which may or may not affect the projected interface.
This article compares customization of the interface shown through Android Auto and CarPlay. It does not treat a redesigned phone home screen as equivalent to changing the in-dash layout. It also does not assume that buying a cable, wireless adapter, replacement head unit, or other hardware unlocks additional settings; the documented controls are software settings on the phone or in the car interface.

On documented feature breadth, CarPlay offers more ways to alter the visible interface. On ease, the evidence supports a conditional answer rather than a universal ranking.
How to customize Apple CarPlay
Rearrange, hide, or restore Home icons
CarPlay lets you organize eligible app icons from the iPhone that will connect to the vehicle. Make these changes while you are not driving:
- Open the iPhone’s Settings app.
- Open the CarPlay settings for the vehicle you want to edit.
- Use the Home-screen customization control to move eligible icons into your preferred order.
- For an icon with a remove control, use that control to hide it from CarPlay Home.
- Use the add control to restore an icon that was previously hidden.
- Connect the iPhone to CarPlay again. Apple says the changes appear the next time CarPlay connects.
Only icons that expose the remove control can be hidden. That means the system does not give you unrestricted control over every item in the interface. The useful distinction is between reordering eligible apps and redesigning the entire Home screen: CarPlay supports the former, not an arbitrary placement system for every system element.

Add and organize widgets
CarPlay supports configurable widgets for glanceable information. Apple’s instructions allow you to add, reorder, and remove widgets through the iPhone’s CarPlay settings while you are not driving.

- Open the iPhone’s Settings app and select the CarPlay configuration for your vehicle.
- Open the widget controls for that vehicle.
- Add the widgets you want to see.
- Reorder them so the most important information appears first.
- Remove widgets you do not want on the car display.
- If offered, enable Smart Rotate or Widget Suggestions according to whether you want automatic rotation or system-selected suggestions.
Widget capacity is not identical in every car. Apple says the number of widget stacks depends on the vehicle’s screen, so a larger display may expose more stacks than a smaller one. If a widget or stack is missing, that may be a display or vehicle limitation rather than a failed setting.
Change wallpaper and appearance
CarPlay includes its own settings for wallpaper and appearance. Open the Settings app on the CarPlay screen after the phone is connected, then choose the available wallpaper or appearance controls. The available choices are part of CarPlay’s interface; changing the iPhone’s regular lock-screen wallpaper is a separate action.
CarPlay also provides switches for Dashboard suggestions and album art. Turn suggestions off if you prefer a more predictable dashboard, or leave them on if automatically surfaced information is useful. Turn album art off if large artwork competes with the information you need to read quickly.

What CarPlay does not let you change
- You cannot hide every system icon; only icons with Apple’s remove control are eligible.
- You cannot choose an unlimited number of widget stacks; the vehicle display determines the available capacity.
- You cannot assume that an iPhone personalization change will alter the CarPlay projection. CarPlay has its own settings for the in-car interface.
- The documented controls do not include a free-form editor for moving every dashboard element anywhere on the screen.
How to customize Android Auto
Use the launcher, dashboard, and recent-app controls
Google’s Android Auto screen guide describes the main navigation areas rather than a broad visual layout editor. The interface includes an app launcher, a microphone control, a recent-app area, and a status area. A dashboard button takes you to the dashboard, and Google documents a setting for quick controls while another app is full-screen.

- Connect the Android phone to the vehicle and open Android Auto.
- Use the app launcher to view compatible applications.
- Use the dashboard button to return to the dashboard view.
- Use the recent-app area to switch among apps you have opened.
- Look for the quick-controls setting if you want access to key controls while another app occupies the full screen.
These controls change how you move around Android Auto, but they are not the same as independently arranging every icon or creating widget stacks. Google’s documented screen guide does not establish a general-purpose home-layout editor.
Apply dark theme and accessibility adjustments
Android Auto’s accessibility guidance documents a dark theme and phone-level display options that can improve legibility or reduce visual motion. Depending on the phone and Android version, the relevant controls may be presented in the phone’s accessibility or display settings rather than as independent car-screen design tools.
- Dark theme: use it when a darker interface is more comfortable at night or reduces glare.
- Bold text: increase text weight when standard labels are difficult to read.
- Outlined text: use an outline treatment when stronger contrast around characters is easier to distinguish.
- Remove or reduce animations: reduce motion if transitions are distracting or uncomfortable.
These options are functional customization: they change readability or motion behavior. They do not provide the same kind of icon, wallpaper, and widget arrangement that CarPlay documents.
Install compatible apps
Android Auto supports compatible services for music, messaging, news, and other categories. To see all compatible apps in Google Play, Google says you must be signed in and have personalization enabled. Installing more compatible apps expands what is available from the launcher, but it should not be confused with designing a custom launcher layout.

An app can be installed on the phone yet remain unavailable in Android Auto if it is not approved as compatible, is restricted by the phone or vehicle, or is not configured for driving use. App availability is therefore a separate question from visual customization.
What Android Auto does not establish
- The cited Google guidance does not establish a widget-stack system equivalent to CarPlay’s.
- It does not document a broad editor for freely moving launcher icons around the projected display.
- It does not provide a complete matrix showing which customization controls every vehicle supports.
- It does not provide a measured comparison showing that its controls take more or less time to use than CarPlay’s.

This table compares documented controls, not personal comfort. A driver who only wants a dark screen and stronger text may find Android Auto’s smaller set sufficient. A driver who wants to curate icons, widgets, wallpaper, and dashboard information has more documented controls in CarPlay.

“Easier” has two separate meanings:
- Easier to get the desired result: CarPlay is more likely to satisfy a request involving icons, widgets, wallpaper, or dashboard cards because those controls are explicitly documented.
- Easier to operate: neither platform has an official usability study in the cited material. The documentation lists functions and procedures, not completion times, error rates, or driver preference results.
For a CarPlay user, the main configuration work happens in the iPhone’s settings while parked, and the result appears on the next connection. For an Android Auto user, the documented experience is more about selecting compatible apps, moving among launcher and dashboard views, and adjusting theme or accessibility behavior. The number of Android Auto controls is smaller, but a smaller set can feel easier when it already matches your goal.

Choose CarPlay when layout matters
CarPlay is the practical choice if you want to:
- Put navigation, audio, messaging, or other eligible apps in a preferred order.
- Hide eligible icons that create clutter.
- Build a widget view around the information you check most often.
- Change wallpaper or appearance.
- Suppress Dashboard suggestions or album art.
Choose Android Auto when readability and simple access matter
Android Auto may be the better fit if your main goals are:

- Using a dark theme.
- Making text bold or outlined.
- Reducing animation.
- Keeping a straightforward launcher, dashboard, and recent-app workflow.
- Using compatible services already available through Google Play.
This is a decision based on the controls you will actually use, not a claim that one interface feels better to every driver.
Vehicle, phone, and app limitations
Both systems are projections whose capabilities can vary with the connected phone and vehicle. A setting documented by Apple or Google may still be unavailable in a particular installation because of display size, software support, app compatibility, or vehicle integration.
- Vehicle display: Apple ties the number of widget stacks to the vehicle’s display.
- Eligible controls: CarPlay only exposes remove controls for certain Home icons.
- App compatibility: Android Auto’s launcher shows compatible driving apps, not every app installed on the phone.
- Account state: Google says seeing all compatible Android Auto apps in Play requires sign-in and personalization enabled.
- Software differences: menu names and available options can differ by phone software, vehicle firmware, language, and region.
- Safety restrictions: Google’s accessibility guidance includes driving-related safety constraints, and Apple’s widget instructions require configuration while not driving.
Do not use the absence of a setting on one vehicle as proof that the platform never supports it. Conversely, do not assume a feature will appear simply because another car or phone supports it.
Troubleshooting customization changes
CarPlay changes are not visible
- Confirm that you edited the CarPlay settings for the correct vehicle if the iPhone connects to more than one car.
- Disconnect and reconnect the iPhone. Apple says icon changes appear the next time CarPlay connects.
- Check whether the icon is eligible for removal; not every icon exposes the remove control.
- If a widget is missing, check the vehicle display’s capacity and whether the widget was added to the correct stack.
- Make appearance changes from CarPlay’s own settings rather than assuming the iPhone’s normal wallpaper or display settings will carry over.
Android Auto options or apps are missing
- Check that the app is designed for Android Auto and appears as a compatible service.
- Sign in to Google Play and ensure personalization is enabled if you need to see the complete compatible-app list.
- Reconnect the phone and reopen the launcher after changing accessibility or theme settings.
- Check the phone’s accessibility and display settings if bold text, outlined text, or reduced animations are not visible.
- Remember that the Google guide does not promise identical controls on every vehicle.
Changes are unsafe to make while moving
Configure icons, widgets, themes, and accessibility settings while parked. If a control is unavailable while driving, treat that as a safety boundary rather than a malfunction. Voice controls and the vehicle’s normal hands-free functions should be used for tasks that do not require looking away from the road.
Do you need new hardware for deeper customization?
No documented setting in the comparison requires a new adapter, cable, head unit, replacement screen, or other physical product. The relevant CarPlay controls are in the iPhone’s CarPlay settings or on the CarPlay screen. Android Auto’s documented controls are in the Android Auto experience, compatible-app ecosystem, and phone accessibility settings. Hardware can affect whether a phone connects or how large the display is, but the supplied platform guidance does not establish that buying hardware unlocks additional icon, widget, wallpaper, or theme controls.
A practical decision checklist
Use this checklist before choosing which platform to rely on for customization:
- Write down the exact change you want: icon order, widget stack, wallpaper, dark theme, text weight, animation, or app availability.
- If the change is icon, widget, wallpaper, Dashboard suggestion, or album-art related, start with CarPlay’s documented controls.
- If the change is dark theme, bold or outlined text, or reduced animation, check Android Auto’s accessibility and theme options.
- Verify that your vehicle display supports the amount of information you want, especially widget stacks.
- Check app compatibility and Google Play account requirements before treating an unavailable app as a layout problem.
- Make all changes while parked, reconnect the phone, and test the result in the same vehicle you will drive.
If your list contains several CarPlay-specific controls, CarPlay is the better-documented customization platform. If your list contains only readability and motion adjustments, Android Auto may provide everything you need without requiring a more elaborate layout.
