In a month of using Apple CarPlay in a Mazda, ZDNET editor Kerry Wan still preferred Android Auto overall—but missed CarPlay’s driving automations, passenger music sharing, and access to third-party AI apps. That’s one driver’s experience, not a universal verdict: the right fit depends on which features you use and whether your phone and car support them.
What this comparison can—and can’t—tell you
Wan’s account, published September 29, 2026, describes switching a Mazda to CarPlay for roughly a month after previously advocating for Android Auto. They preferred Android Auto overall, while identifying three CarPlay features they missed. This is a personal comparison rather than a controlled test or broad survey, so it does not establish that one platform is better for every driver.
Both systems bring core phone functions to a compatible car display. Google describes Android Auto as supporting navigation, maps, calls, text messages, and music. The reported differences below concern particular conveniences and app access, not a measured comparison of performance or safety.

Wan valued the way CarPlay connected with iPhone behaviors such as Driving Focus, which can suppress some notifications, and the vehicle’s audio inputs. They also appreciated glanceable Live Activities, including information such as flight status, sports scores, or weather.

These are features Wan says they missed; the account does not establish that they make driving safer. Notification behavior and which activities appear can depend on the iPhone, software, apps, settings, and vehicle. If you are comparing systems, check which interruptions you want muted and which updates you actually use rather than assuming the experience will be identical across setups.
2. SharePlay lets passengers take part in music playback
Wan says passengers with iPhones could join a SharePlay listening session in the car, control playback, queue songs, and skip tracks. That makes the feature useful when the driver does not want to manage every music choice. The reported benefit is specifically tied to passengers using Apple’s ecosystem.

- Compatible with wired-only Android Auto systems
- Requires Android 11+
- Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
- Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips
- Plug & play setup, no tech skills needed
Wan’s article identifies Spotify Jam as a cross-platform alternative, while describing SharePlay as Apple-ecosystem limited. The account does not provide current setup steps or verify present-day service requirements, so confirm the supported devices and app behavior in your market before relying on either option.

3. CarPlay offered access to a third-party AI assistant
Wan reports using ChatGPT Voice through CarPlay for questions and brainstorming. They also wrote that Android Auto did not allow third-party AI assistants at the time of publication. That availability claim can change with operating-system, app, and vehicle updates, and may vary by region and supported setup; treat it as a time-sensitive report, not a permanent platform rule.

If an in-car voice assistant matters to you, check current app support for your phone, country, and vehicle before choosing a system. The cited account does not establish that every CarPlay user has the same access or that the reported Android Auto limitation remains in effect on every current configuration.

Android Auto requires compatible phone and vehicle hardware. Google’s Get started with Android Auto help page says wired display use requires a compatible car, an Android phone running Android 9.0 or later, an active data plan, and a high-quality USB cable. Wireless projection requires a compatible phone with active data and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, plus a compatible car or stereo.

Google advises checking compatibility for the specific vehicle, and notes that most Android Auto features may not work outside its supported countries. Availability of the features discussed here can also change with software and app updates. Verify the exact phone, vehicle or stereo, connection method, and country rather than assuming that a feature described for one setup is available in yours.
Quick Recap
How to weigh the three differences
- Choose based on your routine: CarPlay’s reported advantages matter most if you use iPhone driving behaviors, want passengers to share music controls, or value third-party assistant access.
- Keep the overall preference in perspective: Wan missed those CarPlay features but still preferred Android Auto overall. The account does not show that the three advantages outweigh Android Auto’s appeal for other users.
- Confirm support before switching: Check your car and phone compatibility, connection method, and country, then verify current app availability for the features you care about.
