Android Auto for your car display is built into compatible Android phones, so you usually do not need to install a separate Android Auto app. If setup asks you to update it, follow the prompt. For routine maintenance, check Google Play for app updates and your phone’s Settings for Android system updates—these are separate processes.

What an Android Auto update means

Google describes Android Auto for car displays as built into compatible phones. If you cannot find a standalone Android Auto app, that does not necessarily mean anything is missing. During setup, your phone may prompt you to update Android Auto; follow the on-screen instructions to continue. See Google’s Android Auto setup instructions and Android Auto Help.

There are two other updates to check separately: updates for apps delivered through Google Play, and updates to Android itself. An unavailable Android system update may reflect the device’s age or the manufacturer’s or carrier’s update schedule, rather than an Android Auto problem.

Check for an Android system update

  1. To see the installed Android version, open Settings and look under About phone or About tablet for Android version, security update, and build information.
  2. In Settings, look for System > Software update or a similarly named software-update option.
  3. Follow the phone’s prompts if an update is offered.

Settings labels differ among manufacturers. Older phones may not support newer Android releases, and update timing varies by device maker and carrier. Google explains the process at Check and update your Android version.

Check compatibility before connecting

Android Auto needs support from both the phone and the car or stereo. A USB port alone does not mean a vehicle supports Android Auto. Check the requirements for your exact phone and vehicle or receiver, and ask the vehicle manufacturer if you are unsure. Google’s current requirements page is the best place to check version thresholds, which can change.

Fix common Android Auto connection problems

Start by confirming support

Check that the exact vehicle or stereo supports Android Auto and that the phone meets the current requirements for the connection method you want. If compatibility is unclear, confirm it with the vehicle manufacturer.

If a wired connection fails

  • Try a high-quality cable shorter than one metre, if possible. Use one that fits both ports and supports data.
  • Avoid USB hubs and extension cables.
  • Check that Android Auto is enabled in the vehicle’s infotainment settings, then restart the infotainment system.
  • If the connection used to work and has stopped, try a different compatible cable; Google says replacing the cable will likely fix many such issues.
  • For an aftermarket Pioneer or Kenwood receiver, check the manufacturer’s website for firmware updates.

These cable and receiver checks follow Google’s Android Auto connection troubleshooting guidance.

If wireless setup fails

  • Confirm that both the phone and the specific car or stereo support wireless Android Auto.
  • Complete the initial Bluetooth pairing using the vehicle maker’s instructions.
  • Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on during setup.

If the phone may be out of date

Check Google Play app updates and Android system updates as separate steps. Because Settings paths and update availability vary by manufacturer, use the options available on your specific phone. Avoid jumping straight to clearing Google Play services data or factory-resetting the phone: these actions can affect more than Android Auto and are not part of Google’s basic setup guidance.

Choose wired or wireless for your setup

Choose based first on compatibility: the phone and the exact vehicle or stereo must support the method. Wired setup needs a suitable data cable; wireless setup begins with Bluetooth pairing and uses Wi-Fi during the connection process. For wired use, cable quality, length, and fit can matter when diagnosing a failed connection. There are no comparative figures here for battery life, sound quality, or reliability, so choose according to your equipment and preference for a cable or a cable-free connection.

Use compatible apps and optional beta access

Android Auto supports compatible navigation, messaging, music, news, and other apps. Google’s navigation guidance describes voice-guided directions, estimated arrival times, live traffic information, and lane guidance through Google Maps or another compatible navigation app. You may need to be parked to type a destination on the car display, and available apps and features vary by phone, region, vehicle, and app. See Android Auto setup and compatibility and Google Maps navigation guidance for Android Auto.

Google also offers an Android Auto beta program for people who want early access and are willing to provide feedback. Beta software may be less stable, and some features may not work properly; it is optional, not the standard way to keep Android Auto updated. Check Google’s Android Auto beta program information for current enrollment details.
