Short answer: Android Auto does not mirror every speedometer app installed on your phone. A speed display appears on a car screen only when the app is built for an Android Auto-supported category, has the required metadata and permissions, and is approved for projection. GPS speed and vehicle-provided speed are separate data sources, and there is no single accuracy tolerance or mph/km/h control that applies to every app, car, and platform.
Android Auto works with phones running Android 9 (API level 28) or higher and a compatible vehicle or aftermarket receiver. Runtime permissions are granted on the phone; on Android 15, the head unit cannot accept the permission dialog.
What an Android Auto speedometer actually is
Android Auto projects selected phone apps onto a compatible vehicle display. It is a controlled projection system rather than a general-purpose screen mirror. The phone still runs the app, while the car screen receives an interface that follows Android Auto’s safety and interaction rules.

Ordinary phone activities are commonly blocked from the head unit. Apps must use a supported Android Auto category, provide the correct metadata, behave reliably, and pass Google’s approval process before they can launch for projection. A developer can therefore publish a perfectly functional phone speedometer that never becomes available in Android Auto.

There are two related but different environments:
- Android Auto: The phone supplies the app and projects it to a compatible car or aftermarket stereo.
- Android Automotive OS: The vehicle runs Android inside the car. It has its own car APIs, permissions, app installation model, and hardware integration.
Do not assume that an app or permission that works in one environment automatically works in the other.
Why your phone speedometer may not appear in Android Auto
Projection approval is separate from phone installation
Installing an app from the phone’s app store does not grant it access to the car display. Android Auto accepts only supported app types and enforces driver-distraction requirements. The developer must declare the appropriate Android Auto capability and submit the app for approval. If the app is intended only for a phone screen, it may be intentionally excluded from projection.
Check the app’s Android Auto listing
Connect the phone to the car, open the Android Auto app list on the vehicle display, and look for the speedometer there. If it is absent while other approved apps appear, the problem is usually compatibility or approval rather than a missing location toggle. Updating the phone app and Android Auto can help only when the developer has already enabled projection; an update cannot make an unapproved category appear.

Phone-only overlays are a special case
Some aftermarket Android head-unit projects draw a floating readout over the Android Auto window instead of presenting a conventional Android Auto app. The open-source Android Auto Speed HUD example requests ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION for GPS data and SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW so its readout can float above other content. This approach is different from an approved projected app, depends on the head unit’s overlay behavior, and should be configured while parked.
Permissions: what each one does and where to grant it
Permission approval happens on the phone that is running Android Auto. On Android 15, users cannot accept runtime-permission requests on the head unit, so a dialog that seems to be waiting on the car screen must be completed from the phone.
Location permission for GPS speed
A GPS-based speedometer needs location access. The cited Speed HUD implementation requests fine location and reads the platform’s GPS provider. On most phones, open Settings > Apps > [your speedometer] > Permissions > Location, choose the most precise option offered, and return to Android Auto. Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version. If location is set to “Ask every time” or denied while the app is in use, the speed readout may remain blank or stop when the phone screen is locked.

Overlay permission for aftermarket displays
An overlay implementation needs SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW. This is normally enabled from the app’s special-access page rather than the ordinary runtime-permission dialog: Settings > Apps > Special app access > Display over other apps, then enable the speedometer. Only grant this to an app you trust, because an overlay can draw above other applications.

Apps that read speed supplied by the vehicle use the CarInfo API and its speed listener, such as addSpeedListener. The permission name differs by platform:

These are not interchangeable permissions. A phone-projected app cannot simply request the Automotive OS permission and expect it to work, and an Automotive app cannot assume Google Play services is providing the same interface.

Approving permissions in the right order
- Disconnect or safely park the vehicle before changing permissions.
- On the phone, open the speedometer’s app-permission page and grant location if the app uses GPS.
- If the app documents an overlay design, enable its “display over other apps” special access.
- Reconnect Android Auto and start the app from the car screen.
- If a car-speed permission is requested, approve it on the phone and verify that the app is intended for your platform.
GPS speed versus vehicle speed
A GPS speedometer estimates motion from location fixes. A vehicle-speed integration receives data from the car. They can disagree without either one being malfunctioning because they measure different signals and may be filtered or displayed differently.

The Android CarInfo documentation distinguishes raw speed from display speed, the value shown on the car’s instrument cluster. That distinction matters when comparing an app with the dashboard: the dashboard may intentionally apply vehicle-specific filtering or calibration, while a raw value follows a different path.

There is no authoritative single number—such as “always within 1 km/h”—for every Android Auto speedometer. Accuracy depends on the app’s algorithm, the phone’s location hardware, satellite visibility, signal reflections, update timing, and whether the vehicle is moving steadily. The Android Auto Speed HUD example proves that an implementation can use GPS_PROVIDER; it does not establish a universal accuracy guarantee for all apps.

Why a GPS reading changes or lags
- The phone is still acquiring a location fix after startup.
- Tall buildings, tunnels, tree cover, or other obstructions reduce satellite visibility.
- Short trips or stop-and-go traffic give the algorithm fewer distance changes to evaluate.
- Battery-saving restrictions suspend location updates when the phone or app is idle.
- The app smooths readings to avoid displaying rapid, distracting fluctuations.
A practical comparison method
- Test only in a legal, safe situation with another person observing the screen.
- Wait for the GPS indicator to settle before comparing values.
- Compare the app with the vehicle’s cluster at a steady speed on an open road.
- Repeat in an area with clear sky and again where reception is obstructed.
- Treat a persistent difference as a diagnostic clue, not proof that one source is universally correct; determine whether the app is using GPS, raw vehicle speed, or display speed.
Does Android Auto show mph or km/h?
There is no universal Android Auto switch that forces every projected speedometer to use mph or km/h. Unit behavior can be controlled by the app, inherited from vehicle settings, or unavailable to the user. Open the specific app’s settings on the phone and look for a unit selector before connecting to the car. If the app reads vehicle configuration, the car’s regional or instrument-cluster setting may determine the value.
The Android CarInfo permission table lists READ_CAR_DISPLAY_UNITS for Android Automotive. That listing does not promise a common unit-setting interface for every Android Auto projection. Android Auto, the vehicle, and the app may expose different controls, so a unit option documented for an Automotive OS app should not be assumed to exist in a phone-projected app.
Compatibility checklist before troubleshooting
- Phone version: Android Auto requires Android 9 (API level 28) or higher.
- Vehicle or receiver: The car or aftermarket stereo must support Android Auto; a USB connection alone does not add support.
- App status: The speedometer must be designed for an Android Auto-supported category and approved for projection.
- Platform match: Confirm whether you are using phone projection or Android Automotive OS built into the vehicle.
- Permissions: Grant location, overlay, or car-speed access on the phone as required by the app and platform.
- Safe setup: Configure overlays and permission changes while parked.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The app works on the phone but is missing from the car
- Confirm that Android Auto is connected and that other approved apps are visible.
- Check the developer’s description for Android Auto support, not merely Android compatibility.
- Update the app and Android Auto, then reconnect.
- If the app still does not appear, assume it is phone-only or not approved; no permission change can bypass Android Auto’s category restrictions.
The permission prompt appears on the wrong screen
On Android 15, accept runtime permissions on the phone. Unlock it, open the app’s permission settings, and grant the requested access there. Restart the connection after approval.
The speed display is blank
- For GPS apps, verify fine location, system Location, and an unobstructed signal.
- For vehicle-speed apps, verify that the app requests the correct platform permission and that the car exposes supported speed data.
- For overlays, verify special access and check whether the head unit blocks floating windows.
- Remove battery restrictions for the app if the reading stops when the phone screen sleeps.
The reading differs from the dashboard
Identify the data source first. A GPS estimate, raw vehicle speed, and display speed are different values. Compare only after the GPS fix is stable, and consult the app’s documentation for its filtering and unit settings.
The units are wrong
Check the app’s own mph/km/h setting, then the vehicle’s regional or cluster setting. If neither exposes a control, the projected app may use a fixed format. Android Auto does not guarantee a universal unit selector.
Choosing the right speed-display approach

Use the dashboard as the primary vehicle reference when available, and treat a phone GPS display as a supplementary estimate unless the app and vehicle documentation establish a different data path.
