Yes, you can display Android Auto on a PC, but Google’s official route is the Desktop Head Unit (DHU), a developer tool for testing Android Auto apps—not a standard consumer feature for using a computer as a car display. The DHU runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux and connects to a real Android phone.
What Android Auto on a PC means
Google describes the Desktop Head Unit as software that lets a development machine emulate an Android Auto head unit so developers can run and test Android Auto apps. The result is an Android Auto head-unit window on your computer, with the phone connected to the workstation.
This is distinct from ordinary Android Auto use: Google’s consumer setup guide covers compatible vehicle displays, connected by USB or wireless pairing. It does not present the DHU as a normal consumer PC display feature.

What you need before installing the DHU
- A computer running Windows, macOS, or Linux, with Android Studio available to install the DHU package through SDK Manager.
- An Android phone connected to the computer. The documented DHU workflows use USB; a data-capable cable with connectors compatible with the phone and computer may be required.
- For the described on-device developer-mode setup, Android 9 or later. For Android 10 or later, Google says the phone must be signed in to Google Play and Android Auto updated before the first DHU run.
- On Linux, DHU 2.x requires GLIBC 2.32 or later, plus the
libc++1andlibc++abi1libraries.
Google’s documented requirements and setup steps can change, so check the current DHU guide if a menu, package, or connection step differs on your system.
Install the Desktop Head Unit
- Install and open Android Studio.
- Open SDK Manager, choose the SDK Tools tab, select Android Auto Desktop Head Unit Emulator, and download the package.
- Find the installed DHU under the Android SDK’s
extras/google/auto/directory.
Connect your phone using USB Accessory Mode
For DHU 2.x, Android Developers recommends USB Accessory Mode. Connect the phone to the workstation with a data-capable cable, then launch the DHU with ./desktop-head-unit --usb. On Windows, use the corresponding executable in the installed directory.

Windows may need the WinUSB driver. Google notes that this driver can interfere with ADB; if device discovery fails, try adb kill-server or use the ADB tunneling method instead. A charging-only cable will not provide the data connection this workflow needs.

Connect using ADB tunneling
The alternative documented route forwards the DHU connection through ADB on TCP port 5277. Follow the steps in order:

- Enable Android Auto developer mode on the phone and start the head unit server in the Android Auto app.
- Make sure Add new cars to Android Auto is enabled.
- Connect the unlocked phone to the computer over USB.
- In a terminal or command prompt where ADB is available, run
adb forward tcp:5277 tcp:5277. - Launch the DHU from the SDK’s
extras/google/auto/directory.
On first connection, the phone may ask you to accept terms or grant permissions. Consult Google’s DHU instructions for the current developer-mode steps and platform-specific details.
What the DHU is useful for—and what it is not
The DHU can emulate touchscreen and rotary input, and lets developers configure resolution, DPI, and frame rate. Those options are useful for checking how an Android Auto app behaves across different head-unit layouts and input types.

That developer focus matters: the DHU is not documented as a general-purpose way to turn a PC into a supported Android Auto display for everyday driving or desktop use. Installing it and connecting a phone does not make every computer a consumer Android Auto head unit.

For ordinary vehicle use, first confirm that the vehicle supports Android Auto. For a wired setup, Google says to connect the phone to the vehicle’s USB port while the car is parked and the infotainment system is on. For first-time wireless setup, the car must support wireless Android Auto; pair the phone and car through Bluetooth, and leave Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled during setup as Google recommends.
