Android Auto runs on your Android phone and projects a driver-friendly interface to a compatible car display. Android Automotive OS (AAOS) runs directly on the vehicle’s hardware and powers its infotainment system. They are different layers, not competing names for the same thing: a car can run AAOS and also support Android Auto.
Where does each system run?
| Question | Android Auto | Android Automotive OS |
|---|---|---|
| Where the software runs | On your Android phone; the phone projects the Android Auto experience to a compatible vehicle display. | On the vehicle’s in-car hardware, as its infotainment operating system. |
| Does the car need a phone connection? | Yes. The phone supplies the Android Auto experience, over a supported wired or wireless connection. | No phone is needed to use the car’s built-in infotainment apps. The car may separately support Android Auto. |
| How apps appear | Compatible apps on the phone provide supported experiences projected to the car display. | Supported apps can be installed in the car’s infotainment system. Availability depends on the vehicle’s configuration. |
| What varies by vehicle? | Whether the vehicle or stereo supports Android Auto and whether it supports wired use, wireless use, or both. | The automaker’s implementation, included services, and supported apps. |
The Android Open Source Project describes Android Auto as a platform running on the user’s phone and projecting its interface to a compatible in-vehicle system; it describes Android Automotive as an operating system running directly on in-vehicle hardware. Android Open Source Project: What is Android Automotive?
Does Android Automotive need a phone?
Not for the car’s built-in infotainment apps. AAOS is installed in the vehicle, so supported apps can run in the car without a phone providing the interface. A vehicle may still offer Android Auto as another way to use compatible phone apps on its display.

Can a car have both Android Auto and Android Automotive?
Yes. Android Developers explicitly says the systems are not exclusive: a vehicle can use AAOS for its built-in infotainment and separately support Android Auto. Having one does not confirm that the other is available. Check the feature list for the exact vehicle and model year. Android Automotive OS overview
What do you need to use Android Auto?
You need a compatible Android phone and a vehicle or aftermarket stereo that supports Android Auto. Google’s general guidance says Android 9.0 or higher is sufficient for most wired connections, while Android 11.0 or higher is needed for wireless connections and selected newer vehicles. Android Developers lists support for phones running Android 9 (API level 28) or higher. These operating-system versions are not a guarantee that a particular phone, car, stereo, or connection type will work together; confirm compatibility for your specific setup and region.

- Compatible with wired-only Android Auto systems
- Requires Android 11+
- Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
- Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips
- Plug & play setup, no tech skills needed
Does Android Auto require a USB cable?
No. Android Auto can connect by USB or wirelessly when both the phone and the vehicle or supported aftermarket stereo allow that connection. Wireless support is not universal. Google recommends a high-quality USB cable for most wired setups. Its guidance names JVC, Kenwood, and Pioneer among stereo makers with supported wireless setups, but support is model-specific. Which one should you expect to use?
- For Android Auto: Check that your phone and the car or stereo support Android Auto, then confirm whether the specific combination supports wired, wireless, or both connection types.
- For Android Automotive: Look at the vehicle’s specifications to see whether it runs AAOS and which built-in apps and services the automaker includes.
- For both: Verify Android Auto support separately; an AAOS label alone does not establish that the car can project your phone’s interface.
Android Auto is the phone-powered projection option; Android Automotive is the vehicle-powered infotainment platform.
