Android Auto can handle calls, messages, directions, and music through voice controls, so you can often complete a task without reaching for the display. After a week of using it hands-free, I found voice control convenient enough that I stopped using the screen for routine tasks. That is a personal preference, not a promise that voice commands are distraction-free or right for every driver.
What Android Auto can do without screen taps
In a compatible car, you can start a request by saying “Hey Google,” using the Android Auto microphone control, or pressing and holding the steering-wheel voice-command button. Google says drivers can use Gemini or Google Assistant to control Android Auto, but the assistant available to you can vary as Gemini replaces Assistant over time. Google’s Android Auto voice-control guidance covers the available methods.
- Calls: Ask to call a contact.
- Messages: Ask the assistant to read or send a message.
- Navigation: Request directions or a destination.
- Media: Ask to play music.
Use a natural, specific request, such as asking for directions to a named destination or asking to call someone in your contacts. Exact phrasing and available features can depend on the assistant, language, account, device, and region. If voice control does not respond, use the microphone control or compatible steering-wheel button rather than assuming every car supports the same controls.
Choose wired or wireless Android Auto
First check whether your particular phone and vehicle—or aftermarket stereo—support Android Auto. Wireless operation has its own compatibility requirements; a vehicle that supports wired Android Auto does not necessarily support wireless Android Auto. Google’s Android Auto setup and compatibility information explains the connection options and regional variation.

| Setup | How it connects | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Wired | Connect the phone to the car or stereo with a USB cable. | Confirm Android Auto compatibility and the USB connector type required by your devices. |
| Wireless | Pair the phone and car using Bluetooth as part of wireless setup. | Confirm that both the phone and the specific vehicle or stereo support wireless Android Auto. |
Google says most compatible cars and aftermarket stereos use USB for wired Android Auto. Phones running Android 10 or later do not need a separate Android Auto app download, according to Google; compatibility still depends on the specific phone, car, and region.
Set it up and start using voice controls
- Check compatibility. Verify that your vehicle or stereo supports Android Auto and, if you want a cable-free connection, that it supports wireless Android Auto. Check the phone requirements as well.
- Connect the phone. For wired use, plug it into the vehicle’s USB port with a compatible cable. For wireless use, follow the vehicle’s pairing process; Bluetooth is used for wireless pairing.
- Start Android Auto. Follow any setup prompts shown by the car and phone. Android 10 and later do not require a separate Android Auto app download.
- Make a voice request. Say “Hey Google,” tap the microphone control, or press and hold the steering-wheel voice-command button if your car has one. Ask for a call, message, route, or music.
Google’s assistant transition is gradual: Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on most mobile devices, but Android Auto availability is rolling out over time. Do not assume that every driver sees the same assistant or has identical features today. See Google’s Android Auto information for current product guidance.

What hands-free use does—and does not—make safer
Android Auto uses a simplified interface with large icons and minimal text. Google says it blocks some interactions while the car is moving, including typing messages and scrolling through large lists. These limits can reduce certain screen interactions, but they do not establish that all voice tasks are safe or free of distraction.
NHTSA defines distracted driving as activity that diverts attention from driving, including interacting with navigation or entertainment systems. In the United States, 3,208 people were killed and 315,167 were injured in crashes involving distracted drivers in 2024, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Those figures describe distracted-driving crashes generally; they do not measure Android Auto’s effect.

If a message needs your attention, NHTSA advises pulling over to a safe location and parking before reading or sending it. Voice control is a way to avoid some manual screen actions, not a substitute for attention to the road.

Distracted-driving laws vary by jurisdiction. In the United States, states set distracted-driving laws; consult current rules for your state through NHTSA’s distracted-driving guidance. In the UK, drivers must not hold and use a phone while driving, including while stopped in traffic, and must remain in control of the vehicle, according to GOV.UK’s mobile-phone driving rules. Do not treat rules for one country as universal.
