Android Auto works only when both your Android phone and your car or stereo support it. A USB socket alone is not proof of compatibility. Check the exact vehicle or receiver model, confirm your phone meets the current Android and Wi-Fi requirements for your chosen connection, then set up USB or wireless projection while parked. If a wired connection fails, the first practical test is a short, high-quality data cable; if the car itself is incompatible, a cable cannot add Android Auto.

What Android Auto requires

Android Auto projects selected phone functions—such as navigation, calls, messages and compatible media controls—onto a vehicle display. Compatibility is a two-part check: the phone must meet Google’s requirements and the car or stereo must be designed for Android Auto. Both conditions are necessary. A newer phone cannot make an unsupported factory system work, and a compatible receiver cannot overcome a phone that does not meet the connection requirements.

Phone requirements by connection type

Connection Current phone requirements Important qualifications
USB (wired) Android 11.0 or higher and an active mobile-data plan The vehicle or stereo must also support wired Android Auto. Android (Go edition) devices are excluded.
Wireless Android 11.0 or higher, an active mobile-data plan, 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, and a car or stereo that supports wireless projection Older exceptions listed by Google are a Google or Samsung phone on Android 10.0, or a Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ or Galaxy Note 8 on Android 9.0. Android (Go edition) devices are excluded.

Google’s troubleshooting guidance also refers to Android 9.0 or higher. That is a troubleshooting starting point, not a replacement for the newer getting-started requirements. Use the current getting-started page as the requirements reference, and remember that meeting an Android-version threshold does not guarantee that a particular vehicle will work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For wireless use, the exception must match both the phone brand and model named by Google. An Android 9 phone that is not one of the listed Samsung models should not be treated as supported merely because Bluetooth audio works. Likewise, Android 10 support is limited to the Google or Samsung phones covered by Google’s exception. Android (Go edition) phones are excluded rather than being covered by those older-version exceptions.

Data service, region and radio requirements

An active data plan is listed for both wired and wireless use because many Android Auto functions depend on the phone’s mobile data connection. Wireless projection additionally uses the phone’s 5 GHz Wi-Fi capability. Google notes a 5 GHz Wi-Fi regulatory requirement for in-car use in the European Union. This is separate from having a home Wi-Fi network; the phone and car need the relevant wireless capability for projection.

Google lists the countries where Android Auto is available and warns that most features may not work outside those countries. Availability, regional rules and device support can change, so verify the current Google requirements page and your phone maker’s information for your location before diagnosing a hardware fault. A connection that starts successfully does not necessarily mean every navigation, messaging or media feature is available in every region.

Android Auto is already on supported phones

Google states: “Android Auto is integrated into phones. You do not need to download it.” On a supported phone, setup is normally controlled through Android settings and the car’s display rather than through a separate app-store download. If you see Google Help’s issue label “My Android Auto app isn’t working,” follow the connection and settings checks below instead of assuming that reinstalling an app will solve an incompatible car or cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That built-in design also explains why a search for a standalone Android Auto download is often a dead end. The useful checks are the Android version, mobile-data service, permissions, wireless capability and the vehicle’s own projection settings. A phone update may be requested during first-time setup, so complete that request while the car is parked.

Is my car compatible with Android Auto?

The exact make, model, model year, trim and stereo unit matter. Two vehicles that look similar can have different infotainment hardware, and an aftermarket receiver may support Android Auto only after a firmware update. Google specifically warns that Android Auto will not work in every car that has a USB port.

Check the vehicle maker first

  1. Identify the exact vehicle model year and trim, or the exact aftermarket receiver model. Record the unit number if the stereo has one.
  2. Look in the vehicle maker’s compatibility information or owner’s manual for Android Auto support. Confirm whether the listing says wired, wireless or both; support for one connection method does not establish support for the other.
  3. Check the infotainment settings for an Android Auto, smartphone integration or projection option. A USB port intended only for charging or music playback is not sufficient.
  4. For an aftermarket unit, check the receiver maker’s support page for the required firmware and installation instructions.

If the manufacturer does not list Android Auto for the exact unit, treat the car as unconfirmed rather than assuming that a different trim’s feature applies. Contact the vehicle or receiver maker when the documentation is unclear. The car’s ability to make ordinary Bluetooth calls or play music is also not proof that it supports Android Auto projection.

What an aftermarket receiver can and cannot do

A compatible aftermarket Android Auto receiver can add projection to some vehicles that lack factory support, but fit and installation are vehicle-specific. Before buying, verify:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Physical fit, wiring harnesses, steering-wheel controls and any required adapters for the vehicle.
  • Whether Android Auto is wired, wireless or available through both methods.
  • Which USB port is intended for phone projection and whether the installation leaves it accessible.
  • Current firmware support and the maker’s update procedure.
  • Whether professional installation is recommended and what happens to the factory camera, microphone or other controls.

Compare receivers on vehicle and trim compatibility, wired versus wireless support, installation and port requirements, and firmware and support availability. No receiver recommendation or brand ranking can substitute for those model-level checks. A cable also cannot make an incompatible factory port or stereo support Android Auto.

How to connect Android Auto by USB

Do the first setup while parked. Google’s sequence assumes the car’s infotainment system is on and the phone has mobile data service. Setting up before a drive gives you time to accept permissions, complete an update and test the display without attempting those steps in traffic.

  1. Confirm that the phone meets the wired requirements and that the car or stereo is listed as compatible.
  2. Start the vehicle or switch on the infotainment system, then leave the car parked.
  3. Use the vehicle’s USB port designated for smartphone projection. Connect it directly to the phone with a high-quality data cable shorter than 3 feet (1 meter). Do not use a USB hub or extension.
  4. Unlock the phone if prompted and read the permissions or setup messages on the phone and vehicle display.
  5. Accept the on-screen instructions. The phone may ask to install a system update before continuing.
  6. If Android Auto does not open automatically, select the Android Auto or smartphone-projection icon on the car display.
  7. Finish setup before driving. Once permissions are accepted, later wired connections should normally start when the phone is plugged in.

A cable that charges the phone can still fail at data transfer. Charging and projection use different functions of the cable, so a charging icon alone does not confirm a usable connection. If Android Auto previously worked and suddenly stops, Google says replacing the cable is likely to fix the issue; use the cable criteria above before changing other settings.

How to connect Android Auto wirelessly

Wireless projection requires support in both the phone and the car or stereo. Bluetooth handles the initial pairing, while Wi-Fi and Location Services also need to remain enabled during setup. Ordinary Bluetooth audio is a different feature and does not establish wireless Android Auto compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that the phone meets the wireless requirements, including 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, and that the vehicle supports wireless Android Auto.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services on the phone. Keep all three enabled during the first pairing.
  3. Park with the infotainment system on. Open the car’s phone or Bluetooth-pairing menu. On some vehicles, pressing the steering-wheel voice-command button opens the new-phone pairing screen; consult the vehicle manual if the controls differ.
  4. Pair the phone and car through Bluetooth, then accept the Android Auto prompts on both screens.
  5. Wait several seconds for wireless Android Auto to start. If it does not appear automatically, tap the Android Auto icon on the vehicle display.
  6. Complete any requested phone update or permission step while parked, then test navigation, audio and calling before driving.

Wireless pairing can fail even when ordinary Bluetooth calling works. If the car offers separate choices for phone calls, audio and projection, choose the Android Auto or smartphone-integration option rather than stopping after the basic Bluetooth pairing. If the vehicle manual uses different menu names, follow its pairing path.

Why Android Auto is not working: a troubleshooting path

Nothing launches or the display says Android Auto is unavailable

  • Recheck compatibility for the exact car, trim or receiver. A USB socket by itself is not evidence of support.
  • Open the infotainment settings and make sure Android Auto is enabled.
  • Confirm that the phone’s Android version, data plan and (for wireless use) 5 GHz Wi-Fi capability meet the current requirements.
  • Restart the car’s infotainment system, then try the connection again while parked.
  • Check whether Android Auto is present as an icon that must be selected manually; some systems do not launch the projection screen automatically.

If the car is not listed by its maker, stop changing phone settings until compatibility is confirmed. A software reset cannot add a missing projection feature.

USB connection fails, disconnects or only charges

  1. Replace the cable with a high-quality data cable shorter than 3 feet (1 meter).
  2. Remove any USB hub or extension and connect directly to the projection-capable port.
  3. Try the phone’s connector again after checking for a loose fit or visible debris; do not force the plug.
  4. Restart the infotainment system and reconnect after the display has fully rebooted.
  5. If Android Auto worked before the failure, treat the cable as the first suspect before changing phone settings.
  6. Confirm that the cable’s connectors match both the phone and the vehicle port; a physically fitting cable may still be unsuitable for data transfer.

If another suitable cable produces the same result, the port, infotainment firmware, phone software or vehicle compatibility may be responsible. The vehicle maker or receiver maker is the appropriate next support contact. Do not keep adding adapters, extensions or hubs, because Google’s recommended test is a short direct cable.

A second car will not connect

Android Auto can retain prior vehicle associations. Unplug the phone, open Android Auto settings, forget the previously connected cars, and repeat setup for the second vehicle. Then check that the second car is separately listed as compatible; a successful connection in one car does not establish compatibility in another. Reconnect only after the second car’s infotainment system has restarted and Android Auto is enabled.

Wireless pairing stalls

  • Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services switched on throughout pairing.
  • Delete the old Bluetooth pairing on the phone and car, then pair again from the vehicle’s new-phone menu.
  • Ensure the car is attempting wireless Android Auto rather than ordinary Bluetooth audio.
  • Restart the infotainment system and the phone if the pairing prompt never appears.
  • Verify that the phone is not an excluded Android (Go edition) device and that any older-version exception exactly matches Google’s listed models.
  • Check that the car itself supports wireless projection; a receiver that supports wired Android Auto may not support wireless use.

Aftermarket receiver problems

Check the receiver maker’s support site for a firmware update. Google names Pioneer and Kenwood receivers as examples for which firmware may matter; those examples are not a complete compatibility list. Follow the maker’s installation and update instructions, because an incorrect firmware file can create a separate receiver problem. Confirm the receiver model before downloading anything, and use the maker’s stated procedure rather than assuming that every unit accepts the same update.

The phone connects but individual features fail

Projection can start while a particular navigation, messaging or media function remains unavailable. Confirm that the phone has data service, the relevant app is compatible with Android Auto, and the required permission is enabled. Regional availability can limit features even when the connection itself succeeds. Treat a missing individual feature differently from a total connection failure: first verify the app, permission and regional conditions before replacing a cable or receiver.

Choosing a cable for wired Android Auto

If your vehicle already supports wired Android Auto, the useful accessory category is a USB data cable marketed for Android Auto or equivalent phone-to-car data use. Choose one that is high quality, shorter than 3 feet (1 meter), and has the correct connector for both the phone and the vehicle. Avoid hubs and extensions. Verify connector and device compatibility before purchase.

Do not buy a cable as a workaround for an unsupported vehicle. The cable carries data between compatible equipment; it does not add Android Auto software to a charge-only port or an incompatible stereo. If a replacement cable does not solve a previously reliable connection, move on to the car’s settings, infotainment restart and manufacturer support rather than repeatedly buying longer or more elaborate adapters.

When to contact support

Contact the vehicle manufacturer for a factory system that is not listed clearly, refuses a known-good cable, or continues to fail after settings and restart checks. Contact the receiver maker for aftermarket firmware, installation or port questions. Contact the phone maker when the handset does not meet the stated Android, Wi-Fi or regional requirements, or when system updates and permissions behave unexpectedly.

When you ask for help, record the phone model and Android version, vehicle model year and trim, receiver firmware, connection type, cable used, and the exact message shown on the display. Also note whether the phone charges, whether another cable was tested, whether another vehicle works with the phone, and whether the failure affects wired, wireless or both methods. Those details distinguish a compatibility problem from a cable, firmware or pairing fault.

Quick decision checklist

  • Checking a new car: verify the exact model and trim with the vehicle maker; do not infer support from a USB port or ordinary Bluetooth.
  • Using USB: meet the Android 11-or-newer wired requirement, have mobile data, use the projection-capable port and a short direct data cable.
  • Using wireless: meet the Android and 5 GHz Wi-Fi requirements, confirm wireless support in the car, and keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services on while pairing.
  • Replacing a cable: choose a high-quality cable under 3 feet (1 meter), with no hub or extension, and match both connectors.
  • Considering an aftermarket unit: verify vehicle fit, wired or wireless capability, installation needs, port access and firmware support before purchase.
  • Still blocked: forget saved cars for a second-vehicle problem, restart the infotainment system, check firmware, and then contact the vehicle or receiver maker.
  • Feature-specific failure: check mobile data, app compatibility, permissions and regional availability before treating the entire Android Auto connection as broken.

The practical answer is therefore conditional: Android Auto is ready when a supported phone, a compatible car or stereo, and a suitable connection are present together. Confirm those three pieces in that order before treating a failed connection as a software mystery.

What Android version is required?

Google’s current getting-started requirements list Android 11.0 or higher for wired use and Android 11.0 or higher with 5 GHz Wi-Fi support for wireless use. Specific older Google, Samsung and Galaxy models are listed as wireless exceptions.

Why does my phone charge but Android Auto does not start?

Charging does not prove that the cable transfers data or that the port supports projection. Try a high-quality data cable shorter than 3 feet (1 meter), connected directly without a hub or extension, and confirm Android Auto is enabled in the car.

How do I set up wireless Android Auto?

Confirm wireless support in both devices, turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services, pair the phone and car through Bluetooth, then accept the Android Auto prompts. Tap the Android Auto icon if it does not open automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Android Auto work in one car but not another?

Compatibility is vehicle-specific. Check the second car’s exact model and stereo support, forget saved cars in Android Auto settings, restart the infotainment system and repeat setup.

Can an aftermarket stereo add Android Auto?

A compatible aftermarket receiver can add projection to some vehicles. Verify physical fit, wiring and adapters, wired or wireless capability, USB-port access, firmware support and installation requirements before buying.

Who should I contact if Android Auto still fails?

Contact the vehicle maker for a factory system, the receiver maker for aftermarket firmware or installation issues, and the phone maker for handset, update, permission or regional requirement questions.

The Bottom Line

Android Auto needs three compatible pieces: a phone that meets the current requirements, a car or stereo that supports the chosen wired or wireless mode, and a suitable direct connection. Confirm compatibility first, set up while parked, use a short data cable for USB, and keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services enabled during wireless pairing.
