Android Auto calls should play through your car speakers, but there is no single hidden switch that fixes every call problem. Check permissions first, then the phone-to-car connection, then the vehicle’s microphone and audio controls. The right branch depends on whether the call will not connect, the other person cannot hear you, or you cannot hear them.
First, identify what is failing
Separate call connection problems from call audio problems. Note whether the issue affects incoming calls, outgoing calls, or both, and which direction the audio fails in.
- The call will not start or connect: Check the Phone app’s calling permission and the phone-to-car connection.
- The other person cannot hear you: Check microphone permissions and the car’s microphone or voice controls.
- You cannot hear the other person: Check call audio routing and the vehicle’s call-volume controls.
- Audio comes from the phone rather than the car: Check the Android Auto connection and Bluetooth pairing.
- Voice dialing fails, but ordinary calls work: Check the steering-wheel voice-command procedure and microphone.
These symptoms can overlap, but a failed microphone is not the explanation for every Android Auto call fault.

Check the permissions that support calls
Review app permissions on the phone for both Google Play services for device connections and the Phone app. Google says Google Play services may use microphone access to support phone calls when the device is connected to Android Auto. The Phone app’s Microphone permission supports call audio, while its Phone permission supports making and managing calls.

Android menus differ by version and manufacturer, so do not rely on one exact path. Open the phone’s Settings and search for “Permissions,” or open each app’s permissions screen from the device’s app settings. Google’s Privacy Dashboard can also show permission activity; the available instructions depend on Android version, with some applying to Android 12 or 13 and later. See Google’s guides to Google Play services for device connections, Phone app permissions, and the Privacy Dashboard.
If a relevant permission is off, enable it and try a call again. If it is already allowed, move on: permission access is one diagnostic check, not proof of the cause.

Verify Android Auto connection and pairing
If calls fail to route through the car or the Android Auto connection itself is unreliable, check how the phone connects. For wireless setup, Google advises keeping Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled during setup and pairing the phone and car over Bluetooth. Also confirm that both the phone and vehicle support Android Auto.

Check the car’s microphone, voice button, and volume controls
If people cannot hear you or voice dialing fails
For a steering-wheel voice command, press and hold the voice-control button until you hear the Android Auto tone, then speak. Reduce background noise. If the car has an aftermarket receiver, check that its microphone works; contact the installer if you are unsure how it is connected.
If you cannot hear the caller
Some vehicles control call or voice audio separately from media and navigation volume. While a call is active, adjust the car’s relevant volume control and consult the vehicle manual for the exact procedure. Google notes that these separate controls depend on the vehicle; a media-volume adjustment may not change call audio.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse the Android Auto display to manage calls
Google documents call controls on the Android Auto display, including accepting incoming calls, reviewing recent calls and voicemail, placing calls by voice, and managing call waiting. Some vehicles also let you answer calls with steering-wheel controls. Which controls are available can vary by vehicle. See Google’s instructions for making and receiving phone calls.
What to report if the problem continues
If the permission, connection, and vehicle-control checks do not resolve the issue, give the vehicle manufacturer a specific symptom report. Include:
- Phone model and Android version
- Vehicle and head-unit model
- Whether Android Auto is wired or wireless
- Whether ordinary Bluetooth calls work
- Whether the problem affects incoming calls, outgoing calls, microphone audio, or playback
- Whether the car uses its built-in or an aftermarket microphone or head unit
This information helps distinguish a phone permission or connection problem from a vehicle-specific control or microphone issue. Google’s general guidance does not identify one fix that applies to every failed Android Auto call.
