For a more useful and entertaining Android Auto setup, try a mix of navigation, listening, hands-free messaging and games for when the car is parked. These seven apps cover those jobs: Google Maps, Waze, Spotify, Audible, TuneIn, WhatsApp and Bubblewoods. They are practical picks, not a universal ranking; what appears on your car’s display can depend on your phone, vehicle, region and app availability.
What to know before choosing Android Auto apps
Android Auto projects a driver-optimized experience from an Android phone to a compatible car display or aftermarket stereo. Google’s developer overview lists Android 9 or later as the phone requirement, but a compatible phone by itself is not enough: the car or head unit must support Android Auto too. Google says more than 500 vehicle models support it, but that figure does not indicate which apps are available on a particular setup. Google’s Android Auto developer overview and Android Auto’s product page provide compatibility details.
You can connect using Bluetooth wirelessly or a USB cable; a cable is relevant only if your setup uses a wired connection. For the apps themselves, Google’s compatible-app collection is the best place to check what is currently available. Google notes that the full listing requires a signed-in Google Account with personalization enabled, and the displayed collection may vary.

Google Maps: a familiar navigation option
Google lists Maps for GPS navigation and traffic alerts in Android Auto. It is a straightforward pick if you already use Maps on your phone and want to see navigation on the car display. This is not a claim that it is more accurate than another navigation app.
Waze: navigation with audio controls on the map
Waze offers another navigation option. Its audio-player integration can put playback controls on the map, which is useful if you want to manage supported listening without switching away from navigation. Waze lists Spotify, Audible and TuneIn among compatible audio players, though availability can differ by country.

Spotify: music and playlists
Google’s Android Auto guidance includes Spotify and gives a voice-command example: “Play my playlist on Spotify.” Sign in to Spotify on your phone before using it in the car. Some features may require a subscription or premium account; check the app’s current terms for your account and region. Google’s Android Auto app guidance covers media apps and voice use.
Audible: audiobooks for longer drives
Audible is listed as an Android Auto media app and also appears among the audio players Waze supports. It suits drivers who prefer a book to music or radio. Access to particular listening features may depend on an account or subscription.

Bubblewoods: a game for parked time
Bubblewoods is a named example of a game for Android Auto. Use games only while parked, such as while waiting at a charging stop or for a pickup. Google says Android Auto automatically exits a parked app when vehicle motion is detected, but that safeguard is not a reason to start or interact with a game while moving.

Games are for parked use. Google announced general availability of the Games category in September 2026, allowing game developers to publish to open testing and production tracks. That rollout milestone does not mean every game or vehicle supports the feature. In a September 21, 2026 post, Google Developer Relations Engineer Jan Kleinert described the use case as “natural downtime, such as while waiting at a charging station or for a curbside order pickup.”
Google’s parked-app guide lists Games for Android Auto and Android Automotive OS. It lists Video and Browsers only for Android Automotive OS, not Android Auto, so do not expect dashboard video streaming through Android Auto. App categories and interfaces are subject to Google’s car quality requirements. Google’s parked-app guidance, the September 2026 Games announcement and Google’s car app quality guidelines describe the categories and rollout.
How to check whether an app works in your car
- Confirm that your phone runs Android 9 or later and that your car display or aftermarket head unit supports Android Auto.
- Open Google’s compatible-app collection while signed in to your Google Account, with personalization enabled if you want to view the full listing.
- Check that the app is available in your country and install or update it on your phone. Sign in where required; some media apps or features need a subscription or premium account.
- Connect to the car using its supported wireless Bluetooth connection or a USB cable if you use a wired setup, then check the app launcher on the car display.
If an app is missing, first verify its current availability in Google’s collection and confirm that your phone, car and app meet the relevant requirements. A static shortlist cannot guarantee that every named app will appear in every launcher.
