Android may delay or restrict an app’s background work to save battery, but a screen lock alone does not prove that Doze is responsible. The cause depends on what stops—notifications, audio, location, an upload, or the app itself—and how long the phone has been idle.
First identify what “stops working” means
Different symptoms point to different kinds of work. A delayed notification or update may involve network access being deferred; audio or location stopping may involve the app’s ongoing work or its background service; an app that closes may have a separate app or system issue. Android’s power-management behavior is only one possible explanation.
- Notifications or updates arrive late: Note whether they are network-dependent and whether they catch up when you wake or unlock the phone.
- Audio, location tracking, or an upload stops: This is a local or ongoing task, not just a delayed network update.
- The app closes or disappears: Record whether it actually exits or simply stops updating in the background.
For a useful diagnosis, note the phone model, Android version, app and app version, whether the phone is unplugged, and whether the problem begins as soon as the screen turns off or only after a longer idle period.

Doze: device idle after screen-off
On Android 6.0 and later, Doze can defer network access and other battery-intensive work when the device is unplugged, stationary, and screen-off for a period. A locked screen can be part of that situation, but locking the screen is not by itself the documented trigger. Android’s Doze and App Standby guidance describes the broader idle conditions.

App Standby: an app has not been used
App Standby can defer network activity for apps you have not actively used, and the system may batch or delay background tasks. This is distinct from Doze, which concerns the device’s idle state.
Background-service limits
Android can stop background services after an app moves out of its active transition window. The rules vary with Android release and the app’s target SDK. Android 8 introduced background-service limits; an app that needs work to continue promptly or without interruption may need an appropriate user-visible foreground service, rather than an ordinary background service. See Android’s background execution limits.

Standby buckets and app-specific restrictions
Android assigns apps to standby buckets that affect how much background work they can do; the restricted bucket has the strongest limits. On Android 13 and later, the documented inactivity trigger for that bucket is eight days without user interaction, subject to exemptions and other conditions. This is not the same as Doze’s device-idle condition. Android’s App Standby Buckets documentation explains the bucket rules.
Android releases, app target versions, and phone makers’ battery controls can all affect the result. There is no single settings path guaranteed across manufacturers.

Check your phone’s background-use setting
- Open Android Settings and find the installed app in the app list. Depending on the phone, this may be under Apps or a similarly named section.
- Open the app’s battery, power, or background-use controls. Labels and available options differ between Android versions and manufacturers.
- If the app genuinely needs to keep working in the background, check whether the phone offers an unrestricted or equivalent battery-use option for it.
- Test the specific function again, noting how long the screen is off and whether the device is unplugged and stationary.
Allowing unrestricted use may increase battery consumption, and it does not remove every Android restriction. Android limits which apps should request direct battery-optimization exemptions; changing the setting is not a general performance fix.
What app developers should do
Schedule deferrable work
For background work that does not need to happen immediately, Android recommends scheduling it around system conditions rather than keeping a service running. JobScheduler is a common option for work that must run while an app is not active.

Use push messaging appropriately
For backend messages, Android recommends Firebase Cloud Messaging rather than maintaining a separate persistent network connection where possible. High-priority FCM messages are intended for time-sensitive, user-visible notifications. Normal-priority messages may wait for a Doze maintenance window or until the device wakes. See Android’s guidance on Doze and App Standby.
Reserve foreground services for user-expected work
A foreground service is for work the user expects to continue immediately or without interruption, and it must be user-visible. Android’s guidance is explicit: “Don’t start a foreground service just to prevent the system from determining that your app is idle.” A foreground service is not a workaround for ordinary background limits.

Account for Android 15 data-sync limits
On Android 15 and later, an app’s dataSync foreground services are limited to six hours total in a 24-hour period, with timeout callbacks and related start restrictions. This applies to that service type and context; it is not a universal allowance for all background work or the default explanation for an app that pauses after lock. Details are in Android 15’s foreground-service timeout guidance.
When the cause is still unclear
If the problem persists, record the app name and version, phone model, Android version, exact failed task, and whether it happens on battery, after a short screen-off interval, or only after extended idle time. These details help separate an idle or background restriction from an app-specific or network issue. Android’s general documentation cannot identify the cause on an unspecified handset, and manufacturer-specific battery behavior varies.
