Archive an Android app when you want to remove its installed software temporarily but keep its on-device app data. Uninstall when you are willing to remove the app and its app-specific local files, preferences, and databases. Archiving is reversible only while the app remains available in the app store and your device can download it again. Uninstalling can be permanent for local data, so check the app’s own backup, account, and sync settings first.
The essential difference
Android treats archiving and uninstalling as different levels of removal:
- Archiving removes the installed app software to reclaim space, but keeps the app’s data on the device. The app icon remains, usually dimmed, so you can identify and restore it later.
- Uninstalling removes the app and its app-specific storage. Android documentation says files in app-specific storage are removed, and its storage guidance lists app preferences and databases as removed as well.
Neither choice should be interpreted as a guarantee about every file the app ever touched. Photos, videos, downloads, exports, and documents saved in shared device storage can remain after an uninstall. Conversely, an app may no longer be able to organize or display those files in the same way once it is gone. Data held in the app’s online account is governed by that app’s own backup and retention policy, not by Android’s uninstall operation.

The installed software is removed
Archiving removes the installed program so the device no longer keeps the app’s software in its normal installed state. That is why archiving can free storage without making you start over with the app’s local data. Google describes the archived state as retaining the app’s icon and data while removing the software.

Local app data is retained
The purpose of archiving is to preserve the app data associated with the installation. That can include the app’s locally stored working data and progress, subject to how the individual app stores information. Retention of local data does not mean the app is usable while archived; the software must be restored before you can open it normally.
Permissions are removed while the app is archived
Google says an archived app loses its permissions. Treat this as a privacy and functionality change: the archived app should not be assumed to have active access to the camera, microphone, contacts, location, storage, or other protected resources. When you restore it, review the permissions again if Android asks you to grant them.
Notifications stop
An archived app cannot continue operating as an installed app for notification purposes. Google specifically lists the ability to send notifications among the functions removed by archiving. If you rely on alerts from a messaging, calendar, security, or work app, archive it only if missing those alerts is acceptable until restoration.
The icon remains as a restoration cue
The icon is retained in a faded or dimmed state. It identifies which app is archived and provides a direct way to restore it. If the icon is absent rather than dimmed, check whether the app was uninstalled or whether the launcher is filtering it; a missing icon is not the normal visual signal for an archived app.
What Android removes when you uninstall an app
App-specific files are deleted
Android Developers documentation states: “When the user uninstalls your app, the files saved in app-specific storage are removed.” These are files kept in locations reserved for that app rather than in storage intended for the user or other apps. Removing them can eliminate offline content, local databases, downloaded app resources, and other data that existed only inside the app’s private area.
Preferences and databases are removed
Android’s storage overview also identifies app preferences and databases as data removed by uninstalling. Settings such as locally saved choices, first-run state, and records stored in the app’s database therefore should not be expected to survive an uninstall unless the app separately backed them up or synchronized them to an account.

Shared photos and documents may remain
Uninstalling does not necessarily erase every file associated with an app. Shared media and documents stored outside app-specific locations can remain on the phone. For example, a photo editor may leave exported images in a user-visible pictures folder, or a document app may leave files in a shared documents location. Those files are still present, but the uninstalled app is no longer there to provide its original browsing, editing, labels, or internal references.
Online data is app-dependent
Android’s storage behavior does not establish what happens to an account, cloud save, subscription, server-side history, or synchronized progress. Before uninstalling, open the app’s account, backup, or sync settings and confirm what is stored online. A later reinstall may recover data that the app synchronized, but reinstalling by itself is not a promise that deleted local data will return.

Understand the two kinds of “app data”
Private, app-specific data
This is the data Android associates with the app’s private installation area. It is the category preserved by archiving and removed by uninstalling. Because the exact contents depend on the app, do not assume that every visible setting or downloaded item is private; use the app’s own backup description when the information matters.
Shared device storage
Shared storage contains files intended to remain accessible beyond one app’s private sandbox, such as user-created media and documents. An uninstall can leave these files in place. Their continued presence does not mean the app’s internal database, bookmarks, tags, or edit history survived. If you need a file, copy it to a known folder or another backup location before removing the app.
Cloud or account data
Cloud retention is controlled by the app’s service. Some apps synchronize automatically; others require an explicit backup, account sign-in, or export. Android’s archive and uninstall behavior cannot tell you whether a provider will retain, delete, or restore that information. Verify the app’s documented process before taking an irreversible step.
Which option should you choose?

How to archive an app manually
Google’s documented manual path is available through Android Settings. Labels can vary by manufacturer and Android release, but the sequence is:

- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps (the section may be named Apps & notifications on some devices).
- Select the app you want to remove temporarily.
- Tap Archive if the control is offered.
- Confirm the action and wait for Android to complete it.
Afterward, look for the app’s dimmed icon. The app’s software has been removed, so opening it will require a restore download rather than an instant launch. There is no universal storage-savings percentage: the amount depends on the app’s installed software and device state.
How to restore an archived app
Restore from the faded icon
- Find the app’s dimmed icon in the launcher.
- Tap the icon.
- Allow Android or the app store to download and reinstall the software.
- Open the app and review any permission prompts.
Restore through App info or the store page
Google also documents restoration through the app’s App info screen or the app’s details page in the app store. Use the restore or install control shown there, then wait for the download to finish.
Conditions that can block restoration
- The app store must be installed. An archived app depends on the store mechanism to obtain its software again.
- The app must still be available in the store. If the developer or store has removed it, the normal restore path may not work.
- The device needs enough free storage. If space is still low, remove other files or apps before attempting the download.
- Android version and hardware matter. Google notes that some archive controls work only on Android 15 and later and that certain steps require compatible hardware.
Restoring an archive is not the same as recovering an uninstall. Archiving is designed to keep the local app data; uninstalling removes app-specific data that may not be recoverable unless the app backed it up elsewhere.

Google Play can automatically archive unused apps when the feature is enabled. Automatic archiving is intended to reclaim space without immediately discarding the app’s data, but the same practical effects apply: the software is absent, permissions are removed, and notifications stop until restoration.
Check the Play Store setting
- Open the Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Choose Settings.
- Open General.
- Look for Automatically archive apps and review whether it is enabled.
Menu wording and availability can differ by device and Android version. If an app must never be archived automatically, Google’s documented per-app control is the Manage app if unused setting:
- Open Settings and go to Apps.
- Select the app.
- Turn off Manage app if unused.
That setting is separate from manually choosing Archive. Disabling it excludes the app from the automatic-unused-app behavior described by Google; it does not reinstall an app that is already archived.

How to uninstall without losing something important
Make a pre-uninstall checklist
- Open the app and confirm that you know which account is signed in.
- Check the app’s backup, sync, export, or account settings.
- Save important photos, videos, downloads, and documents to a known shared folder or another backup destination.
- Record anything that exists only in the app, such as locally stored drafts or offline records.
- Verify that you can reinstall the app later, especially if it is no longer prominent in the store.
Remove the app
Use the uninstall control from the app’s long-press menu, its App info screen, or its store listing. Confirm the prompt only after the checklist is complete. The exact button label and menu location vary by device, but the result is the same: the installed app and its app-specific local storage are removed.

Reinstall only after confirming the data path
When you reinstall, sign in to the same account and follow the app’s restore process if it provides one. A clean installation may look like a first launch if the app had no usable cloud backup. Do not treat the fact that the app appears again as proof that its previous local database was recovered.

Because manufacturers use different Settings layouts, read the confirmation text carefully. “Archive,” “Uninstall,” and “Clear storage” are not interchangeable labels.
Troubleshooting common problems
The Archive option is missing
Archive controls are version- and device-dependent. Google notes that some steps require Android 15 or later and compatible hardware. If the option is absent, check the device’s Android version, system updates, and whether the app is eligible. Do not substitute Clear storage if your goal is to preserve data.
The archived app will not restore
Confirm that the app store is installed, that the app still has a listing, and that the phone has enough free space for the download. A low-storage device may need storage management first. If the app has been withdrawn from the store, the normal archived restore route may no longer be available.
The icon disappeared
An archived app normally remains visible in a dimmed state. If it is gone, check the full Apps list and the store’s installed or library views. The app may have been uninstalled, hidden by the launcher, or removed from the device through another management action.

Notifications stopped unexpectedly
Check whether the app was archived automatically or manually. An archived app cannot send notifications until restored. If alerts are essential, restore it and review notification and permission settings after installation.
Files remain after uninstalling
That is possible when the files are in shared storage rather than the app’s private area. Review the folders where the app exported media or documents, and decide separately whether those user-visible files should be kept or deleted. Their presence does not prove that private preferences or databases survived.
My data is missing after reinstalling
First determine whether the missing information was local or cloud-backed. Uninstalling removes app-specific local data. If the app had a backup or account sync, sign in to the same account and use its restore function. If no backup existed, Android does not provide a general undo for deleted app-private databases.

Practical examples
A game you play occasionally
Archive is the safer first choice when the game occupies substantial installed space but you expect to return to it. The local data is intended to remain, but you will need a download before playing and you will not receive notifications while it is archived. If the game’s progress is account-based, verify that synchronization is active before choosing uninstall instead.
A photo or document app
Identify where original and exported files are stored. Uninstalling can remove the app’s private catalog, edits, drafts, or database while leaving user-visible photos and documents in shared folders. Copy anything important and confirm whether the app offers an export or cloud backup before removing it.
An app used for urgent alerts
Do not archive an app whose notifications you must receive continuously. Archiving stops notifications by design. Keep it installed, or establish another reliable alert method before taking it offline.
Bottom line
Choose Archive when your priority is temporary space recovery with the best chance of preserving on-device app data. Choose Uninstall when you want the app and its private local data removed, after checking backup and sync. Treat shared photos and documents separately, because they may remain outside app-specific storage. If restoring matters, remember the three conditions Google identifies: the app store must be present, the app must still be offered there, and the device must have enough free space to download it.
