If you want your phone’s screen to light up only when a notification arrives—or want more control over the clock and notifications shown while it is idle—Pixel already has an Always-On Display (AOD), but its built-in options may not match that behavior. Third-party apps offer different ways to customize the display or automate when it appears; they are not interchangeable, and compatibility and permissions matter as much as features.
What Pixel already provides—and what may be missing
Google’s Pixel AOD is not absent: Pixel’s built-in At a Glance feature can show information and updates on the lock screen, home screen, and AOD. What appears depends on feature settings and permissions. Google’s Pixel help page describes the built-in experience.
The narrower gap is control. Some users want the display to wake only after a notification, or want richer ways to interact with notifications and customize the clock. One Pixel user described the request as “AOD on ONLY when notification arrives”; that is an anecdotal example of a need, not proof that every Pixel lacks the behavior or wants the same setup.

Android tablet lock-screen widgets are related but do not solve this phone-AOD question. An Android Developers Blog FAQ said Pixel Tablets already had lock-screen widgets and scheduled AOSP availability for tablets and mobile after Android 16 (QPR1), expected in late summer 2025. That schedule is not evidence that the feature is currently available on every device, and widgets are not the same as notification-triggered AOD.

For a richer, notification-focused display, Peek AOD’s advertised options are the closest match in this group. For rules that change when the phone’s own AOD activates, Pixel Auto AOD describes automation. For a manual switch, the F-Droid utility is the narrower tool. None should be assumed to work on every Android phone.
Check device fit before installing
AOD behavior depends on the phone maker’s implementation, not just the Android version. The F-Droid toggle’s developer says it has been tested only on Google Pixel and explicitly cautions that manufacturers handle AOD differently. Check the app listing or project notes for your exact model and Android version, then verify the requested behavior on your device before relying on it.

Also distinguish an app that draws its own display from a utility that changes the system AOD setting. A custom-display app may need different access than a toggle or automation tool, and an option described in a listing may not behave identically on every device.

Understand the setup and permissions
Some automation and toggle tools require elevated access to change secure system settings. Both Pixel Auto AOD’s repository and the F-Droid toggle describe use of WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS; the toggle’s listing says to grant it through Shizuku or ADB. That is a setup requirement to consider before installation, not an ordinary notification permission.

For any app, review permissions before granting them and use Android’s permission controls to revoke access you no longer want. Android explains how to manage app permissions at Manage permissions from the Android phone settings.

Keeping pixels lit can affect power use, but the available app claims are not a substitute for a controlled comparison on your phone. Unit Byte Tech’s AMOLED Edge listing says, “Most users see under 3% overnight drain on AMOLED screens.” That is the developer’s claim, not an independently measured result or a general estimate for AOD apps. No independent battery test is established here.

Privacy disclosures also differ. Peek AOD’s Google Play Data safety section says the developer reports no data collected and no data shared with third parties. AMOLED Edge’s listing says the app may collect and share location, financial information, and other data types, reports encryption in transit, and describes accessibility permission use. These are developer-provided disclosures, not independent audits, and can change. Google explains where to review an app’s Data safety information in Google Play’s Data safety section.

- Read the current store listing and Data safety section rather than relying on an old summary.
- Grant only the permissions needed for the behavior you choose.
- If a feature depends on accessibility or secure-settings access, understand what that access enables before turning it on.
A practical way to choose
- Try the built-in baseline: check Pixel’s AOD and At a Glance settings first, including the permissions and information you want visible.
- Decide what you actually need: a custom clock and tappable notifications point toward a richer display app; notification- or charging-based activation points toward automation; a quick manual switch points toward a toggle.
- Verify your phone and Android version: read the current listing or project notes for your exact device, especially if it is not a Pixel.
- Review setup and data disclosures: check requested permissions, any secure-settings or accessibility steps, and the current Data safety section before enabling the app.
- Test the behavior yourself: check whether the screen appears under the conditions you selected, whether notifications remain usable, and whether battery use is acceptable for your routine.
