Short answer: iPhone is the better-documented choice for Lock Screen widgets, but the available evidence does not support naming a definitive Android 17 vs. iOS 27 winner. Apple provides a clear iPhone setup flow and developer guidance for how widgets appear. Android documentation describes lock-screen hosting as a possible framework arrangement, but does not confirm that standard Android 17 phones offer it to users.
Can you add widgets to an iPhone Lock Screen?
Yes. Apple says Lock Screen widgets are available on iPhone with iOS 16 and documents how to add them. To set one up, Apple’s instructions are:
- Touch and hold the Lock Screen.
- Tap Customize, then tap the Lock Screen.
- Tap Add Widgets.
- Select widgets or drag them into position.
- Tap Done.
Apple gives weather, air quality, battery level and calendar events as examples. The available choices depend on the apps and widgets installed on the phone.

Apple’s WidgetKit documentation identifies the Lock Screen as one of the places iPhone widgets can appear. Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines describe inline and rectangular accessory widget families. On iPhone’s Lock Screen, widgets use a monochromatic, vibrant treatment; the appearance can vary with the surrounding context and the user’s customization.

Can you put widgets on an Android 17 lock screen?
The cited Android documentation does not establish that users of standard Android 17 phones can add widgets to their lock screens. Android’s AppWidget API reference describes lock-screen hosting as a possible arrangement and says such a host would have a distinct way to add, remove and manage widgets. That is framework-level documentation, not confirmation of a feature shipping in Android 17 on retail phones.
Android’s widget design guidance focuses on widgets as glanceable, actionable app content and covers their design and placement. It does not verify lock-screen access on Android 17 devices. Whether a particular phone offers such a feature needs to be checked against that manufacturer’s software and the exact build.

What Android 17’s behavior-change page confirms
Google’s Android 17 behavior-change documentation discusses changes for apps targeting Android 17, including a memory limit for bitmaps and icons in RemoteViews. It does not announce user-facing lock-screen widget support. A developer-facing API or compatibility change should not be treated as proof that a feature is available in the phone’s settings.

On the evidence that can be verified here, iPhone is the documented option: Apple explains how to add Lock Screen widgets and how developers design them for that space. Android 17 parity is unverified. That is a limit of the available release- and device-specific evidence, not proof that no Android phone can support lock-screen widgets.

A fair head-to-head comparison would need to check the exact retail phones and stable software builds being compared. The available sources do not establish enough about Android 17 availability—or the full iOS 27 feature set—to score widget count, size, placement, interaction, privacy controls, app selection or consistency across devices. Apple’s general documentation and iOS 16 setup instructions also do not prove whether iOS 27 changed those details.
Can you interact with a lock screen widget without unlocking?
The cited documentation does not establish which actions can be completed from a locked phone, or whether authentication is required before an action runs. Apple describes the widgets and their setup; Android’s documentation describes a possible host framework. Neither source set provides a release-specific, device-by-device account of locked-state interaction. Check the behavior of the specific widget and phone rather than assuming that an actionable widget can perform every action while the device is locked.

What to check on the phones you are comparing
For a practical comparison, use named devices on the software versions you care about and check the same criteria on each:

- Consistency: Does the feature behave the same across devices from the same platform, or does it depend on a manufacturer’s software?
These checks matter because platform documentation alone cannot establish what a particular device ships with. Widget selection can also depend on installed apps.
