Android 17 adds six capabilities to Advanced Protection Mode, including Intrusion Logging, locked-screen USB Protection and a lockout after repeated authentication failures. They are not available on every Android 17 phone: Google says USB Protection and Failed Authentication Lock are limited to select devices, and its USB instructions specifically list Pixel 6 and later. Check your phone’s settings and support documentation before relying on a feature.

What Android 17 adds to Advanced Protection

Google announced six updates to Advanced Protection on October 1, 2026. The mode is an opt-in set of device protections, not a single security switch. Its core configurations include blocking installations from unknown sources, restricting USB data signaling and requiring Google Play Protect scanning. Depending on the device and settings, the broader suite can also affect browsing, app installation, theft and offline-device protections, messages and phone features. Google’s announcement and Android Developers’ Android 17 documentation describe the suite.

  • Intrusion Logging: Records selected system activity for later review; it requires a separate opt-in.
  • USB Protection: Prevents a new USB data connection from being established while the supported phone is locked.
  • Accessibility restrictions: Restricts AccessibilityService access for apps that are not verified Accessibility Tools.
  • WebGPU restriction: Disables WebGPU in Chrome while Advanced Protection is on.
  • Failed Authentication Lock: Locks the device after repeated authentication failures in settings or secured apps.
  • App-status transparency: Adds a settings page showing which installed apps check Advanced Protection status. This is visibility into app behavior, not a blocking defense by itself.

Google’s announcement says all six are available on Android 17 devices except USB Protection and Failed Authentication Lock, which are available only on select Android 17 devices. Google’s USB help page names Pixel 6 and later for USB Protection; the announcement does not provide a complete list of supported non-Pixel models for that feature or Failed Authentication Lock. Availability can vary by device, so confirm the individual setting is present.

What Intrusion Logging records—and what it cannot prove

Intrusion Logging is optional even after Advanced Protection is enabled. Google says it can record app process starts; app installations, updates and removals; network activity including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth starts or stops, DNS lookups and IP addresses; USB file transfers; system certificate changes; and device lock or unlock events. The resulting record can help a trusted expert investigate activity, but it is not a guarantee that every compromise will be detected or every event will appear.

Google says the feature works at system level and does not treat Chrome Incognito specially. Network events may therefore reveal visited websites, though not specific pages. During very heavy activity, fewer events may be written to the log. Google’s Intrusion Logging help page explains the recorded event types and limitations.

Who can access the logs?

Logs are end-to-end encrypted on the device and stored on Google servers. Google says the encryption keys are protected by the Google Account password and screen-lock credentials. The logs are retained in encrypted form for 12 months and then automatically deleted. They cannot be manually deleted earlier, including after turning off Intrusion Logging or closing the account.

You can download and decrypt logs from a signed-in Android device. Once decrypted, the downloaded copy is your responsibility to protect; share it only with a trusted security expert and handle the file securely. If the device is lost or damaged and you lose the screen-lock recovery factor, the logs may become permanently inaccessible.

How to turn on Advanced Protection and Intrusion Logging

Set a screen lock before starting. Labels and steps can differ by device, and some phones may need a reboot.

  1. Open Settings > Security & Privacy > Advanced Protection.
  2. Turn on Device protection and follow the prompts to enable Advanced Protection.
  3. Choose whether to enable Intrusion Logging separately.
  4. If you enable logging, select the Google Account for encrypted log backup and complete the on-screen setup.

To retrieve logs, go to Settings > Security & privacy > Advanced Protection > Intrusion Logging > Access logs, select a device, then choose Download & decrypt. Keep the decrypted file secure. Google’s setup and download instructions are in its Advanced Protection help and Intrusion Logging help.

How USB Protection behaves when the phone is locked

On supported devices, USB Protection turns on automatically when Device protection is enabled in Advanced Protection settings. While the screen is locked, it blocks establishing a new USB data connection; unlocking the phone permits a new connection. Charging still works, although fast charging may not begin until the screen is unlocked in some cases.

The protection has important boundaries:

  • A USB data connection started while the phone is unlocked can remain active after it is locked.
  • After locking, a disconnected USB data connection may take a few seconds to be disabled.
  • USB is not protected until the phone has finished booting.
  • Hardware and manufacturers’ USB implementations can affect behavior, including charging speed.

These behaviors are documented in Google’s USB Protection help page. The feature is a barrier to starting a new data connection while locked, not a way to terminate every existing USB session.

What Failed Authentication Lock does—and what is not specified

Google describes Failed Authentication Lock as locking the device after repeated authentication failures in settings or secured apps. The reviewed official sources do not state a numeric failure threshold, so do not assume a particular number of attempts or treat the feature as a configurable delay. It is supported only on select Android 17 devices according to Google’s announcement; check your phone’s Advanced Protection settings for availability.

This is distinct from Advanced Protection’s Inactivity Reboot: Google says that separate protection automatically reboots a phone left locked for 72 hours. That figure is not the Failed Authentication Lock threshold.

Decide whether the trade-offs fit your needs

  • Logging is useful for investigation, not continuous assurance. It captures a range of system events, but it cannot promise a complete record or establish by itself that a device was compromised.
  • Consider the privacy and retention implications. Encrypted logs remain on Google’s servers for 12 months and cannot be manually erased sooner; decrypted downloads need careful handling.
  • USB protection can affect convenience. Unlock the phone to start a new USB data session, and be aware that an existing session can continue after locking.
  • Check compatibility before depending on a control. The documented USB support is Pixel 6 and later, while Google identifies only select Android 17 devices for USB Protection and Failed Authentication Lock without naming all eligible models.

Advanced Protection is a bundle of opt-in defenses, and the six additions do not all work in the same way: some restrict behavior, Intrusion Logging creates investigative evidence, and the app-status page reports which apps check protection status. Use the controls your device actually offers and understand their limits before treating them as a safeguard.
