Andrew Schulz’s apparent Mortal Kombat II introduction at The Game Awards 2025 was a staged Street Fighter publicity joke, not an unscripted confrontation. Playing Dan Hibiki in the upcoming Street Fighter film, Schulz baited the audience into expecting a surprise appearance by the rival movie’s cast, then used the setup to deliver a punchline about money and fan loyalty.

What Andrew Schulz said about Mortal Kombat II

The Street Fighter cast appeared at The Game Awards 2025 to present the Best Ongoing Game award while promoting its film. Schulz first praised the audience and claimed that the Mortal Kombat II cast had flown around the world because they appreciated fans. He then revealed that the other cast was not there:

“I’m just kidding, I’m just kidding. They don’t care about you. They only care about money. We care about money and you. Street Fighter forever!”

The structure was deliberate misdirection. The audience was encouraged to believe a crossover-style appearance was about to happen, and the reveal turned that expectation into the joke. Street Fighter cast member Callina Liang immediately underlined the performance by saying, “Schulz cannot be trusted! He’s joking.”

Because Schulz plays Dan Hibiki in the Street Fighter movie, the line functioned as both character-flavored trash talk and a live promotional moment. It targeted the absent Mortal Kombat II cast rather than announcing an actual dispute between the productions.

Why the clip spread so widely

The bit put two long-running fighting-game properties in direct competition during one of gaming’s most visible live broadcasts. It also looked spontaneous: viewers heard a flattering introduction, anticipated a surprise, and then saw the premise collapse into an insult. That combination made the exchange easy to circulate as a short clip and gave the Street Fighter campaign a memorable identity.

How the Mortal Kombat side responded

Todd Garner’s producer response

Mortal Kombat II producer Todd Garner responded publicly with the sentence, “I don’t climb over others to get ahead.” The remark was presented as a pointed answer to the awards-show joke, but it did not announce a production dispute or any change to the film.

Lewis Tan answers in an interview

Lewis Tan, who plays Cole Young in Mortal Kombat II, addressed the clip on The Brandon Davis Show. His response was considerably sharper:

“Andrew Schulz is the last person that should be talking shit on that stage. Obviously, not a fighter, not even really an actor. We heard it.”

Tan also said he had friends in the Street Fighter cast, naming Rayna Vallandingham and Andrew Koji, and added: “I love a good rivalry, so let’s go.” That combination of criticism and acknowledgment of personal connections kept the exchange in the territory of promotional rivalry rather than a claim of a serious personal feud.

Did Ed Boon say the beef was real?

Ed Boon, co-creator and series director of Mortal Kombat, later described the exchange as part of the franchises’ “three-decade-long rivalry.” He called the episode fun, said there were “certainly no hard feelings,” and said he wanted both films to succeed because audiences can support more fighting-game movies.

Boon also said he would like a Street Fighter character to appear as a guest fighter in a future Mortal Kombat game. That idea reinforces his interpretation: the rivalry is useful creative fuel and fan-service potential, not evidence that the film teams are engaged in a genuine feud.

Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat’s promotional approaches

The campaigns used different ways to turn the old franchise competition into attention for their films.

Aspect Street Fighter moment Mortal Kombat II responses
Promotional tone A live, crowd-facing stunt built around misdirection and a punchline Public statements from producer Todd Garner and cast member Lewis Tan
Language Schulz joked that the rival cast cared only about money Garner used a concise rebuttal; Tan used explicit trash talk
Seriousness Immediately framed as a joke by Callina Liang Tan invited a rivalry, while Boon emphasized “no hard feelings”
Reported cinema date October 16, 2026 May 8, 2026

The dates reported for the two films also gave the exchange a natural competitive frame: Mortal Kombat II was scheduled for May 8, 2026, followed by Street Fighter on October 16, 2026. Release schedules can change, so those dates should be treated as the reported 2026 plans rather than a guarantee of final distribution.

Was the Mortal Kombat versus Street Fighter beef real?

The evidence points to a manufactured rivalry layered over a real, decades-old competition between the game series. Schulz’s setup was a planned promotional bit; Liang identified it as a joke; Tan responded in deliberately provocative language while acknowledging friendships with people on the opposing film; and Boon explicitly called the exchange playful. Nothing in these responses establishes a serious conflict between the productions.

The episode nevertheless worked because the rivalry is recognizable to fans. A brief awards-show segment could invoke that history without requiring either film to stage a formal crossover or make a business claim about the other movie.

What viewers should take away

  • Schulz did not unexpectedly confront the Mortal Kombat II cast; he staged a fake introduction during a Street Fighter appearance.
  • The joke targeted the cast’s absence and used money-versus-fans language as its punchline.
  • Garner, Tan and Boon responded at different levels, from a pointed one-line post to interview trash talk to an explicit statement that there were no hard feelings.
  • No reliable published statistic confirms how many people watched or shared the clip.
