A family preparing foundations for a house in Ninh Binh, Vietnam, uncovered a deliberately arranged group of ceramic jars about 30 centimetres below ground on 11 October 2026. Specialists have preliminarily identified the pottery as Tran Dynasty household wares dating to the 13th–14th centuries (1225–1400). The provincial museum formally documented and took custody of six jars and several fragments, while a separate Tuoi Tre report estimated that about 20 objects remained relatively intact.
What was found under the house site?
Do Van San’s family encountered the ceramics while probing soil for house foundations at the Cua Bac 2 resettlement area in Ninh Nhat 3 residential quarter, Hoa Lu ward, Ninh Binh province. The objects lay roughly 30cm below the surface. Rather than continuing to dig, the family voluntarily stopped construction, made preliminary cleaning, and reported the discovery to local authorities and relevant agencies.
The Ninh Binh provincial museum and heritage specialists subsequently inspected the find, recorded it and received six jars together with several fragments. Tuoi Tre described a larger group of roughly 20 relatively intact objects in an area of about three square metres. That account is a separate estimate and should not be treated as the definitive inventory: the museum’s documented custody record is six jars and fragments.

How the jars were arranged
According to measurements reported by the Ninh Binh Department of Culture and Sports and the Vietnam News Agency, the ceramics were deliberately placed in two east–west rows. They were stacked in three staggered layers across a strip approximately 2.2 metres long and 0.45–0.5 metres wide.

Why specialists associate them with the Tran Dynasty
The Department of Culture and Sports and museum specialists preliminarily identify the objects as Tran Dynasty household wares. The Tran Dynasty ruled Vietnam from 1225 to 1400, so the proposed date covers the 13th and 14th centuries. The jars are fine stoneware fired at high temperature, a durable ceramic fabric used for domestic vessels.

Two forms were recorded: straight-sided jars and jars with rounded shoulders. Some examples bear incised lines or combed decoration. These shape and surface features support a period identification, but the dating remains preliminary. The reports do not describe laboratory testing, a securely dated layer, or a final archaeological assessment.
What the deposit can—and cannot—tell archaeologists
Only soil was found inside the jars. Inspectors reported no associated architectural remains or other artefacts. The objects were above natural soil, and no broader archaeological remains were detected during the initial inspection. Officials therefore said the location did not, at that stage, meet the conditions for an emergency archaeological excavation.

Specialists said the vessels may have been buried or stored. Their orderly rows and layered placement indicate intentional deposition, but the available evidence does not establish who placed them, why they were deposited, or whether they were connected to a building, burial, storage facility or nearby monument. A provenance linking the jars to any particular historical site has not been confirmed.
What happened to the artefacts?
The family’s prompt report allowed the provincial museum and cultural-heritage authorities to inspect, document and secure the objects. The responsible department proposed that construction could resume while the heritage authorities safeguarded the find and monitored the area for additional discoveries under Vietnam’s Law on Cultural Heritage.

No museum-display schedule, conservation report or final excavation report has been announced. The six jars and fragments remain the formally recorded group in museum custody; the larger Tuoi Tre estimate should be kept separate until officials publish a complete inventory.
Local historical context
The discovery site is about 2km from A Nau Pagoda and about 1km from Duc Thanh Temple, locations associated with the Tran period in the reports. That proximity gives the find a useful historical setting, but it does not prove that the jars originated at either monument or were moved from one of them.

Ninh Binh has an active archaeological record. A 2025 provincial heritage report discusses excavations at Thanh Dền and Mán Bạc, but those projects are separate investigations and should not be conflated with this residential construction discovery.
What happens next?
- Heritage officials may continue monitoring construction for additional ceramics or structural remains.
- The museum can undertake conservation, cataloguing and comparative study of the stoneware forms and decorations.
- A fuller archaeological assessment would be needed to establish the deposit’s function, exact date and relationship to the surrounding landscape.
Until such work is published, the most accurate description is a preliminary Tran Dynasty identification based on ceramic form and technology, not a final laboratory date or complete excavation conclusion.
