An expert appraisal separates three questions that are often confused: what the coin is, whether it is authentic, and what it might bring in a particular market. The process starts with attribution and suitable comparisons, then weighs strike, surface, style, physical measurements, provenance and, when justified, scientific analysis. No single clue—weight, patina or a convincing design—proves genuineness by itself.
What an ancient-coin appraisal actually determines
“Appraisal” can describe different services. Before sending a coin anywhere, identify the result you need because the examination, expertise and fee may differ.
| Outcome | What it answers | What it normally requires |
|---|---|---|
| Identification or attribution | Which culture, ruler or issuer, denomination, date range, metal and type the object appears to represent | Clear images or a physical examination, measurements and comparison with reference material |
| Authentication opinion | Whether the object is consistent with an ancient manufacture rather than a modern counterfeit, altered piece or misdescribed object | Hands-on inspection is usually stronger than photographs alone; specialists assess multiple independent clues |
| Market valuation | What a defined market might pay, given authenticity, attribution, condition, rarity, provenance and timing | An explicit valuation service and current market knowledge; an identification service may not provide it |
The British Museum’s Money and Medals Department illustrates the boundary clearly: “We do not provide valuations or certificates of authentication – if you require this advice, please consult a dealer or auctioneer.” Its service can identify objects, but it does not automatically answer the other two questions. It also avoids opinions on some ancient coins when provenance is uncertain or conflicts with national or international law.
Ask every provider to state in writing which of these outcomes is included, whether the coin will be physically examined, and what evidence supports the conclusion.

How experts attribute an ancient coin
Attribution is the structured description that makes comparison possible. NGC Ancients describes labels that may include the issuing culture or category, date, ruler or issuer, composition, denomination, weight, designs, distinctions and pedigree. An attribution is not immutable: more than one description can be current, and scholarship can revise dates, mints or readings.
Reading the coin’s designs and inscriptions
The specialist records the obverse and reverse type, portraits, deities, animals, symbols, control marks, mint signs and any lettering. Even a few surviving characters can narrow the possibilities, but worn or off-centre strikes often leave gaps. The expert compares the whole design rather than forcing an identification from one familiar symbol.
Using references and appropriate comparators
Standard catalogues and academic references provide the comparison framework. A useful comparator matches the relevant culture, denomination, period and manufacturing tradition; a superficially similar coin from another region can mislead. The report should identify the references or examples used and explain any competing attribution when scholarship is unsettled.
Why an attribution can remain provisional
Ancient minting was not mechanically uniform. New hoards, die studies and excavated evidence can change accepted classifications. A careful opinion labels uncertainty—such as “attributed to” or a date range—instead of presenting a disputed assignment as a fact.
The “Three S’s”: strike, surface and style
NGC’s ancient-coin grading framework centers on strike, surface and style. These are related but separate observations; a strong result in one does not cancel a weakness in another.

Strike
Strike describes how the dies transferred the design to the blank. Experts note centering, relief, completeness of lettering, die wear and areas that failed to fill. A genuine coin can be weakly struck or off-centre because of ancient production conditions, so poor detail alone is not proof of a fake. Conversely, unusually complete detail in a place where the dies or flan should prevent it deserves scrutiny.
Surface
Surface examination considers wear from circulation, burial deposits, corrosion, scratches, edge damage, deposits and signs of cleaning or other conservation. The surface may reflect recovery and later treatment as much as ancient use. Tool marks, unnatural smoothing, filled pits, suspiciously uniform texture or a modern coating can affect both authenticity and value.

Style is the coherence of portraits, anatomy, lettering, proportions and engraving technique with the claimed mint and period. Ancient dies were hand-engraved, so legitimate examples vary—even within one series. Comparison must therefore use an appropriate group of coins and an expert familiar with that variation, not a single “perfect” image.
What measurements can—and cannot—prove
Weight in grams
NGC records weight in grams because it assists authenticity assessment and academic study. A gram scale lets you document the measurement before consultation. The number should be interpreted with denomination, metal, expected tolerance, wear, corrosion and possible edge loss in mind. A matching weight is only one piece of evidence; modern counterfeits can be made to the correct mass, and genuine coins can lose material.
Diameter, thickness and edge
Record diameter in millimetres at the widest point and, where practical, thickness at the edge. Photograph the edge because seams, casting bubbles, filed areas or joins may be invisible on the faces. Do not scrape deposits or file the edge to obtain a measurement.

Photographs that preserve useful evidence
Take parallel, sharply focused photographs of both faces and the edge in diffuse light. Include a scale or ruler, avoid glare, and make sure lettering is readable. A second set with raking light can reveal relief and tooling, but lighting should not hide damage or create artificial contrast. Images support triage; they rarely replace a physical inspection for authentication.

Gather old tickets, invoices, auction references, collection inventories, export or import records and correspondence. Note when and from whom the coin was acquired, even if the chain is incomplete. NGC says pedigree discovery or verification is not included in its grading fee and that submitters generally must supply documentation for a pedigree to appear on a label.
The American Numismatic Society’s collecting guidance in The Numismatist (Fall 2012) advises scrutiny of vague or unverified collection claims. A named former collection without a dated record is not the same as a traceable ownership history. Provenance can add historical context and help establish when an object was documented, but it is not a guarantee of authenticity or legal title.
Explain gaps plainly. Do not invent an earlier owner, convert a dealer’s verbal statement into a document, or treat an auction appearance as proof that a coin was genuine. Keep digital scans and originals together so the specialist can assess the evidence.
When scientific analysis is appropriate
NIST describes non-destructive elemental and isotope methods as research tools for ancient coins. In suitable cases, they can help narrow the metal’s composition, possible source or date context. Such testing is specialized evidence, not a routine certificate and not a universal solution.

Scientific results still need numismatic interpretation. A compatible alloy does not prove that a particular coin was struck in antiquity; counterfeiters can use old or appropriate metals, and legitimate coins can contain impurities or later surface material. Ask what question the test is intended to answer, whether sampling is truly non-destructive, how results will be reported and who will interpret them.
Why counterfeit detection is difficult
The Swiss National Museum notes that identifying counterfeits requires detailed knowledge of historical minting and that modern counterfeiters may possess strong numismatic knowledge. This is why simple home rules fail:
- A plausible weight does not establish authenticity.
- A green, brown or “old-looking” patina can be artificial or applied to a modern surface.
- A convincing portrait or readable inscription can be copied from published examples.
- One matching catalogue photograph cannot account for die links, fabric, edge manufacture and surface treatment.
Experts look for a coherent combination of fabric, die style, metal, strike, wear and surface. They may compare die characteristics with known examples and consider whether tooling, casting, transfer or added details explain anomalies. If the evidence remains inconclusive, “not established” is a more responsible conclusion than a confident yes or no.
Prepare the coin before contacting a specialist
- Handle it minimally. Hold the edge with clean, dry hands or gloves and keep it in a stable, inert holder. Do not polish, scrub, chemically dip or remove deposits.
- Photograph both faces and the edge. Use high-resolution, glare-free images plus a scale. Add a raking-light set only as a supplement.
- Record measurements. Write down weight in grams, diameter, approximate thickness and any edge irregularities. Note the scale’s resolution and whether the coin was weighed in a holder.
- Transcribe visible evidence. Copy letters exactly as visible, mark uncertain characters, and describe symbols, portraits and damage without guessing the ruler.
- Assemble documents. Include tickets, invoices, auction lots, collection records, ownership dates and legal import or export paperwork.
- State the question. Tell the provider whether you need attribution, an authentication opinion, a valuation, or all three. Ask whether an in-person submission is required.
These steps organize evidence; they do not substitute for an expert’s physical examination.

| Decision point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Expertise | Does the specialist regularly handle the relevant culture, period, denomination and material? |
| Examination method | Will the coin be inspected physically, or is the opinion based only on submitted images? |
| Opinion covered | Is the written result identification, authentication, valuation, or a clearly separated combination? |
| Reference basis | Which catalogues, die studies, laboratory methods or comparison coins support the conclusion? |
| Condition and alteration | Are strike, surface, cleaning, tooling, mounting and repairs addressed? |
| Provenance work | Does the fee include pedigree research, or must the client provide and verify documents? |
| Terms and fees | What is the charge, turnaround, return procedure, liability limit and policy if the opinion is inconclusive? |
| Legal and ethical limits | Will the provider decline objects with uncertain or potentially unlawful provenance? |
Fees and availability vary by provider and region; the sources do not establish a universal price or a definitive list of qualified appraisers. Verify current terms directly before shipping an irreplaceable object.
What a useful written opinion should tell you
Request a report that distinguishes observation from conclusion. It should identify the proposed culture, issuer, date or range, denomination, metal and type; list weight and dimensions; describe strike, surface and style; disclose visible alterations; explain the confidence level and alternatives; and identify the references or comparators used. If provenance was considered, the report should say which documents were reviewed and which gaps remain.
A valuation should also state the market assumption—such as auction, dealer or insurance context—and the date of the estimate. A number without a market, date and condition basis is easy to misunderstand and should not be treated as a guaranteed sale price.

- Cleaning before submission: Abrasion or chemicals can destroy evidence and reduce value. Leave the surface untouched.
- Relying on a single online image: Use multiple appropriate comparators and seek specialist review.
- Equating age with legality: Ask for ownership and export documentation; age alone does not establish lawful trade.
- Assuming a museum identification is an appraisal: Confirm whether authentication and valuation are expressly included.
- Demanding certainty from limited images: Accept a conditional or inconclusive opinion when the evidence cannot support more.
- Quoting an unsupported price range: Require a dated, market-specific valuation instead of a generic estimate.
Questions to settle before you send the coin
Write down the exact decision you need to make: keep, insure, sell, research or report the object. Then ask the provider what physical access, documents, measurements and comparison material are necessary for that decision. This prevents paying for an identification when you require authentication or a market estimate, and it keeps the coin’s condition and provenance intact while the examination is arranged.
