Explore an unfamiliar Africa
You travel through a dangerous prehistoric environment, investigate landmarks and resources, and learn how objects and surroundings can help the clan. Expeditions require practical survival decisions rather than simply following a linear mission list. Predators and weather can turn a routine journey into a serious risk, and the game lets you intimidate predators when encounters become unavoidable.
Expand the clan and its territory
Survival depends on more than one controlled character. You form social bonds, establish families, recruit new clan members and manage a growing group. The game allows you to control different clan members, so the abilities and vulnerabilities of the individual you select matter during exploration and emergencies.

Evolve through generations
Discoveries and abilities can be passed to later generations. Choices determine which attributes and knowledge survive that transition, meaning two players can develop notably different clans. Progress is therefore measured not only by what one character can do, but by what the group preserves when generations change.

How survival systems shape play
- Basic needs: Clan members must eat, drink and sleep.
- Environmental danger: Predators and weather create hazards while you travel and settle new areas.
- Social continuity: Bonds, families and recruitment help maintain the clan.
- Risk and succession: A death or failed expedition can affect which knowledge reaches the next generation.
- Player-led development: Your actions decide which discoveries and abilities become part of the clan’s evolutionary path.
This combination makes the game less like a conventional action campaign and more like managing a living lineage. There is no single prescribed route through evolution: exploration, social organization and cautious experimentation all contribute to progress.

Why the Assassin’s Creed connection matters
Patrice Désilets co-founded Panache Digital Games and serves as its creative director. A May 23, 2019 publisher release from Take-Two identifies him as the original creative director of the Assassin’s Creed franchise. That credit explains the headline connection, but Ancestors is not an Assassin’s Creed game or a historical stealth sequel. Its focus is prehistoric survival, clan management and generational change.
In that release, Désilets said: “Our goal for Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is to provide an experience no player has ever lived before.” The same description places the game’s broader journey between 10 million and two million years ago, with discoveries and abilities transferred to succeeding generations.
