The Anbernic RG DDS looks stronger on announced screen resolution and modern hardware specifications, while the Nintendo 3DS remains the clear choice for glasses-free stereoscopic 3D and playing physical 3DS Game Cards. The RG DDS has not yet been shown to play 3DS games, and its price, release date, software configuration, performance, and battery runtime are not established in the available launch information.
RG DDS vs Nintendo 3DS at a glance
| Feature | Anbernic RG DDS | Original Nintendo 3DS |
|---|---|---|
| Displays | Anbernic specifies an approximately 4.7-inch, 1200 × 720 upper IPS panel and an approximately 4-inch, 960 × 720 lower IPS panel. Both are specified at 300 PPI and 500 nits. | Nintendo lists a 3.53-inch upper display at 800 × 240 pixels and a 3.02-inch lower touch display at 320 × 240 pixels. |
| Stereoscopic 3D | No native 3DS-like stereoscopic feature is identified in the announcement. | The upper screen presents different images to the left and right eyes to create a glasses-free 3D effect; the effect can be adjusted or turned off. |
| Physical game cards | Launch coverage reports no cartridge slot. | Has a Game Card slot for Nintendo 3DS cards. |
| Announced hardware | Anbernic names a Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 chip, active cooling, and a 6000mAh battery. | Original-model hardware details are in Nintendo’s operations manual; the 3DS family includes later models with different battery estimates. |
| Battery runtime | Not stated in the announcement. | Nintendo publishes approximate runtime ranges that vary by model and software. |
| Price and availability | Not stated in the official first-look article or launch coverage. | Current used or refurbished prices and stock are not established here. |
The RG DDS display figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. Anbernic says each screen triples the pixel dimensions of the corresponding original 3DS display while preserving its aspect ratio. That comparison concerns pixel dimensions; it does not mean the RG DDS reproduces the 3DS’s stereoscopic effect.
Which device has the better screens?
RG DDS: larger, higher-resolution panels on paper
Anbernic’s October 10, 2026 first-look article specifies an approximately 4.7-inch 1200 × 720 upper IPS panel and an approximately 4-inch 960 × 720 lower IPS panel. The company also specifies 300 pixels per inch and 500 nits for both panels. These are announced specifications; they do not establish measured brightness, viewing quality, or performance in use.

Nintendo’s original 3DS specifications list an upper screen measuring 3.53 inches diagonally at 800 × 240 pixels, with 400 pixels per eye when displaying 3D, and a 3.02-inch 320 × 240 lower touch screen. Its standout display feature is not pixel density: the upper screen sends different images to each eye to create stereoscopic depth without glasses.

If screen size and stated pixel density matter most, the RG DDS looks stronger by specification. If you want the 3DS’s glasses-free depth effect, the Nintendo system has the advantage; the RG DDS announcement describes conventional IPS panels, not a native equivalent.
Can the RG DDS play Nintendo 3DS games?
The available launch information does not establish that the RG DDS can run 3DS games, nor does it provide a compatibility list or demonstrate gameplay. Its announced chip and display specifications are not proof of compatibility or reliable performance. Treat support for any particular 3DS title as unconfirmed unless Anbernic publishes software details or compatibility evidence for the released device.

Anbernic names a Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 chip, active cooling, and a 6000mAh battery for the RG DDS. Those figures describe announced components, not tested game performance or hours of use. The announcement does not state RG DDS runtime, so battery capacity alone cannot tell you how long it will last between charges.

- You are interested in the announced modern chip, active cooling, and battery capacity, while recognizing that real-world performance and runtime are not yet established.

- You want Nintendo’s published approximate battery-runtime guidance for a particular 3DS-family model.
What remains unknown about the RG DDS?
The official RG DDS first-look information does not state a price, release date, RAM or storage capacity, operating system, supported software, or battery runtime. The available launch sources also do not settle actual game compatibility, sustained performance, or current purchasing availability. Those details are necessary for a firm value or buying recommendation, so compare them against the final product listing when one is published.
Verdict: The RG DDS appears better on announced display specifications and modern hardware, while the Nintendo 3DS is better for native stereoscopic 3D and direct use of physical Game Cards. The RG DDS is not yet a proven 3DS-game replacement.
