An analog phone adapter, or ATA, connects a standard analog telephone or fax machine to an IP phone network. The analog device plugs into the adapter’s RJ-11 FXS port, while the adapter connects to the network through Ethernet. An ATA is only the bridge: you still need a compatible VoIP service or phone system, and not every adapter works with every provider.

What is an analog phone adapter?

An analog telephone adapter (ATA) is a device that lets analog telephone equipment work with an IP-based phone service. Think of it as the box between the phone and the IP phone system: the phone connects to the ATA, and the ATA joins the network.

Cisco describes its ATA as a way to connect an analog device, such as a phone or fax machine, to a network. Its ATA 191 documentation shows RJ-11 ports for analog devices and an RJ-45 Ethernet port for the network (Cisco ATA 191 user guide).

How does an ATA connect a phone to VoIP?

  1. Connect the analog device: Plug the phone or supported fax machine into an RJ-11 FXS port on the ATA.
  2. Connect the network: Use Ethernet to connect the ATA to the IP network, following the adapter and service provider’s setup instructions.
  3. Use a compatible phone service: The provider or call-control system must support and configure the ATA. The adapter does not create a phone service or provide an internet connection by itself.

On the Cisco ATA 191/192 multiplatform models, the two RJ-11 ports are FXS ports for standard analog devices; each can be used for voice calls or fax sessions, subject to the service configuration (Cisco ATA 191 and ATA 192 multiplatform user guide, updated April 10, 2025).

What can you use an ATA for?

  • An analog telephone: Keep a conventional phone while using an IP-based phone service, if the provider supports the adapter and device.
  • A fax machine: Connect a fax machine where the ATA, phone service, and configuration support fax. Cisco documents fax sessions for the specified ATA ports; that does not guarantee that every fax setup will work.

For example, Verizon Business Digital Voice says customers need its phone service and an ATA to use older phones or fax machines. Its setup instructions connect the analog device by RJ-11 and the adapter to the internet by Ethernet (Verizon Business Digital Voice ATA support).

What should you check before choosing an ATA?

  • Provider or phone-system compatibility: Confirm the exact model, firmware, and provisioning method are supported. Cisco’s administration guide identifies particular call-control environments for its multiplatform models; it does not establish compatibility with every service (Cisco ATA 191/192 administration guide, updated January 30, 2026).
  • Number of ports and lines: Check how many FXS ports the adapter has and whether the provider can configure each port for the line you need. Cisco documents two voice ports and independent numbers for its ATA 191/192 family; that capability is specific to those models and service configuration.
  • Your analog device: Verify that the intended phone or fax machine and its required features are supported. Do not assume compatibility for alarms, modems, or other specialized equipment without confirmation for that device and service.
  • Network and power: Check the adapter’s Ethernet and power requirements in its model-specific instructions.

What an ATA does not do

  • It does not turn an old copper landline into internet access.
  • It does not provide VoIP service on its own; you need a compatible provider or call-control system.
  • It does not guarantee that every analog phone, fax machine, or specialized device will work with every provider.
