An old Android tablet can become an excellent room remote for a smart TV or streaming box. Its large screen keeps a directional pad, volume controls, app shortcuts and an on-screen keyboard together, while Wi‑Fi control works without pointing at the television. It is not truly universal, however: older infrared-only equipment still needs an IR transmitter.
Why an old tablet works so well as a room remote
A conventional remote is compact, but that compactness forces trade-offs. Important controls may be hidden behind a sliding panel, text entry can require repeated presses, and the remote is easy to lose. A tablet can remain on a stand or charging dock in a predictable location and provide a larger touch interface.
The Universal Remote app listing describes a full D-pad, volume controls, app shortcuts and keyboard entry for supported Android TV/Google TV, Roku, Fire TV, Samsung and LG devices. Those features depend on both the target device and the app’s compatibility; they are not guaranteed on every old tablet.

How Google TV pairing works
Google’s Android TV Help says, “You can use the Google TV app on your phone or tablet to navigate your Android TV.” The tablet and television must be connected to the same Wi‑Fi network. The app discovers the TV, then asks you to enter a code shown on the television to finish pairing.
- Update the tablet, or reset it if old software or a crowded storage drive prevents apps from installing.
- Connect both the tablet and Android TV device to the same Wi‑Fi network. Guest networks or client-isolation settings can prevent discovery.
- Open the Google TV app and choose the discovered television or streaming device.
- Enter the pairing code displayed on the TV when prompted.
- Test navigation, volume and keyboard entry before placing the tablet in its permanent location.
If the TV does not appear, confirm that both devices are on the same network name, disable any VPN or guest-network connection temporarily, and restart the tablet, router and TV. Pairing is limited by what the TV exposes over its network protocol; an app cannot add Wi‑Fi control to an otherwise IR-only device.

Where the “universal” claim ends
Wi‑Fi remote apps work only with devices that provide a supported network interface. Many older televisions, cable or satellite boxes, receivers and other audio equipment accept commands only through infrared. A tablet without an IR emitter cannot send those commands by software alone.
The IR Blaster app listing identifies several possible solutions: an Android device with a built-in IR blaster, a compatible USB IR dongle, or an audio-to-IR adapter. It also lists supported IR protocols, but compatibility must be checked for the specific tablet model, Android version, dongle and app before buying. A USB accessory that works on one tablet may not work on another because of connector type, drivers or power limits.

Sony documents IR control of cable and satellite boxes on certain Google TV and Android TV models, including models that use an included IR blaster cable. This is model-specific guidance, not evidence that every television or set-top box supports the same arrangement.
Built-in IR versus an external transmitter
- Built-in IR blaster: simplest for legacy equipment, if the tablet actually includes an emitter and the app supports it.
- USB IR dongle: useful when the tablet lacks an emitter, but check USB-C or Micro-USB compatibility, Android support and app requirements first.
- Audio-to-IR adapter: another option listed for compatible setups; it still requires the correct app and protocol support.
Tablet remote versus a conventional remote

The practical winner is usually a hybrid arrangement: use the tablet for smart-TV and streaming controls, and retain an IR remote or add compatible IR hardware for older components.

Making the tablet reliable in daily use
Give it a permanent home
Place the tablet on a stand near the seating area or where people enter the room. Keep a charging cable connected so a low battery does not turn the remote into a scavenger hunt. A dock or stand is an accessory choice rather than a requirement, but fixed placement is what makes the setup feel like a household remote instead of another mobile device.

- Keep the remote app on the first home-screen page.
- Disable aggressive battery optimization for the remote app if Android stops notifications or discovery in the background.
- Use a screen timeout long enough for normal viewing, while retaining a lock method that household members can use.
- Label the tablet or its stand so it is not carried away with other devices.
Check compatibility before investing
Record the tablet model, Android version, USB connector and target equipment models. Then verify that the chosen app supports those details. App-store compatibility text is developer documentation, not a guarantee for every old tablet, so confirm the return policy for any IR accessory.

Common problems and fixes
- TV is not discovered: move both devices off guest Wi‑Fi, check the network name, and restart them.
- Pairing code fails: start a fresh pairing attempt and enter the newly displayed code; codes are tied to the active session.
- Streaming controls work but an amplifier does not: the amplifier is probably IR-only and needs a supported transmitter.
- USB IR dongle is ignored: confirm the tablet’s port, OTG support, Android version, app support and the dongle’s required power.
- Tablet is always dead: use a nearby charger and stand, and test that the cable remains connected when the tablet is placed down.
Bottom line
An old Android tablet is the best universal-style remote I have owned when the room is built around compatible smart TVs and streaming devices. The large interface, keyboard and fixed location solve everyday annoyances that tiny remotes create. Treat “universal” as conditional: Wi‑Fi handles supported network devices, while IR-only equipment still requires a built-in or external infrared transmitter.
