An iPhone SIM card is for cellular service, not a backup of your phone. It helps identify and authenticate your subscription on a mobile network. A physical SIM may also hold contacts saved to it by an earlier phone, but iPhone does not save its contacts there. Photos, messages, apps and other iPhone content are not stored on the SIM.
What information is stored on an iPhone SIM card?
A SIM is a small card with structured data used to support a mobile subscription and network authentication. The exact optional information can vary by SIM generation and carrier; the technical standard describes the SIM interface and its files, not a guaranteed inventory for every card. ETSI/3GPP’s SIM interface specification provides the technical context.
A physical SIM can also contain contacts if a previous phone saved them to the card. That is separate from the contacts on your iPhone: Apple states, “Your iPhone doesn’t store contacts on the SIM card.” Apple’s contact-import instructions explain how to bring supported SIM contacts onto an iPhone.

Are my contacts saved to my SIM or my iPhone?
Contacts created or kept on an iPhone are not written to its SIM. They may instead be stored on the iPhone or synced through iCloud or another mail account. A SIM from an older phone may have a separate set of contacts, depending on how that phone saved them.

Importing contacts from a SIM copies supported entries into the iPhone; it does not copy current iPhone contacts onto the card. The information available for each contact depends on what the previous phone stored on the SIM.
How to import contacts from an old SIM
- Check that your iPhone model has a physical SIM tray and that the previous SIM can be used in it. If the card is a different size or your iPhone has no tray, do not force it.
- Insert the previous SIM. Use a SIM ejector tool only to open a physical SIM tray; it does not read the card or recover data.
- Open Settings > Apps > Contacts > Import SIM Contacts. If prompted, choose where to import the contacts.
- Open Contacts and check the imported entries. The number of contacts and details available depend on what the old phone wrote to the SIM.
These are Apple’s current support steps; menu labels may differ across iOS versions. See Apple’s instructions for importing SIM contacts.

Will photos or text messages stay on the SIM if I remove it?
No. A SIM is not a copy of your iPhone’s content. Removing it does not transfer or preserve your photos, iMessages, app data, call history or an iPhone backup on the card. Those are distinct from the subscription and authentication functions of a SIM. Also distinguish SIM data from records that a mobile carrier may hold; those records are not stored on the SIM simply because the carrier provides your service.
What does a SIM PIN protect?
A SIM PIN controls use of the cellular subscription: Apple says a PIN may be required to use the SIM or eSIM for calls and cellular data. It is separate from the iPhone passcode and does not lock or encrypt photos, messages or apps stored on the phone. Apple explains how to use a SIM PIN.

A physical SIM is a removable card; an eSIM is provisioned electronically. Which option an iPhone supports depends on its exact model and regional configuration, and the carrier’s process for provisioning or transferring service. Neither is an alternative storage location for photos or messages.

For example, Apple’s iPhone 17 technical specifications list support for two active eSIMs, storage for eight or more eSIMs, and no compatibility with physical SIM cards. That applies to the specified iPhone 17 configuration, not every iPhone. Check the specifications for your exact model and region before looking for a SIM tray or planning a service transfer.
