A report says Apple is developing a feature that could show an iPhone user a shortcut or camera view when the phone is brought near certain LG home accessories. It is not an announced Apple or LG capability: the details come from a leaker cited by MacRumors, and the feature is reportedly still changing during development.
What the reported iPhone proximity feature may do
MacRumors reported on October 9, 2026, citing leaker pdfu, that a feature called “Proximity Control” could surface a prompt when an iPhone is tapped against or brought close to a compatible LG accessory. The prompt may appear in the Dynamic Island on supported iPhones. MacRumors’ report describes different prompts depending on the accessory:
- Thermostat-like accessory: a shortcut labeled “Open Controls.”
- Cameras and a wired video doorbell: a camera viewer.
- iPhone and iPad models without Dynamic Island: a notification reportedly remains visible for 30 seconds.
The report says the proposed LG lineup includes a thermostat, temperature sensor, deadbolt, wired video doorbell, and security cameras. These are reported product plans, not a confirmed or available LG catalog.

How the accessory recognition is said to work
According to the same report, an accessory would use an NFC tag containing an identifier alongside a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) broadcast to help the iPhone recognize it. A first tap would reportedly provide feedback as setup begins. The report also says a Home app setting could disable proximity controls after setup.

Those are implementation details attributed to the leaker, not confirmed specifications from Apple or LG. MacRumors says the feature’s settings changed across iOS 27 beta versions and that it remains in active development, so the prompts, requirements, and behavior could change or the feature may not ship as described.
What Apple has actually documented
Apple’s public documentation covers related capabilities, but does not confirm this LG feature. Its Nearby Interaction framework supports app experiences with UWB-enabled devices and third-party accessories, including distance and direction information. That general technology is not documentation of the reported Home Proximity Control flow.

Apple’s iPhone guide to Dynamic Island says it appears on supported iPhone models and can show alerts and Live Activities. It does not describe LG accessories or proximity-triggered Home controls.
Apple also says the Home app can control compatible accessories and describes setup by scanning an accessory to pair it. Its materials list categories such as thermostats, cameras, locks, and sensors; the Apple Store currently lists the ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium as one thermostat example. These establish that the categories exist in Apple Home, not that LG has released the rumored products or that an existing accessory offers this interaction. Apple Home and the Apple Store’s Home accessories catalog provide the current product context.

Do not confuse it with Apple’s EU proximity-pairing feature
Apple separately documents a proximity-triggered accessory-pairing program for the European Union. With iOS 26.5 or later, an iPhone can detect an accessory in pairing mode through a Bluetooth LE advertisement and prompt the user to pair. Apple’s program requires accessory self-certification, server registration, and a companion app. Apple’s EU pairing documentation describes that distinct feature; its existence does not verify the reported LG Home controls.
A separate reported setup flow is not the Dynamic Island hint
MacRumors also describes another rumored setup flow: an iPhone could tap an unpowered accessory and transfer pairing identity and network credentials over NFC, allowing setup to continue when the accessory receives power. The report characterizes this as HomeKit-specific, while conventional Matter pairing would remain available after power-on. This is a separate claim about setup, not evidence that the Dynamic Island prompts are confirmed.

What to expect if you are considering an accessory
For now, do not choose or buy an accessory on the assumption that it will trigger these prompts. Apple and LG have not publicly confirmed the feature, the product names or release timing, supported iPhone and iPad models, required OS versions, or final controls. If you need a thermostat or another Home accessory today, check its confirmed compatibility and installation requirements; no existing product should be assumed to reproduce this rumored proximity interaction.
