When several coding agents work at once, the hard part is no longer just editing code. You also need to know what each agent was asked to do, which files it changed, what decisions it made, and whether the result is ready to review. An editor remains useful, but coordinating that work calls for a broader workflow.
What is an ADE, and how is it different from an IDE?
In this article, an agentic development environment (ADE) means a system for organizing coding-agent work across tasks and time. It is a practical design framing, not a settled technical standard: products and practitioners may use the term differently.
Everton Kozloski’s distinction is that an IDE organizes one person’s code work, while an ADE organizes autonomous agents as engineering work—including parallel execution, multiple models, and context that persists over time. The editor does not disappear. The work unit expands from a file or chat session to a task with intent, constraints, tools, execution history, output, and review.

That difference matters when a conversation ends or attention shifts. If the task exists only in a chat, the next person—or the same agent later—may have to reconstruct what was intended and what has already happened. An ADE-style workflow makes that state visible and resumable. Kozloski’s AuraPunk design uses cards and specifications (SPECs) to identify work before execution, layered memory to retrieve relevant decisions, and an integration guard to constrain and record tool actions. These are proposed architectural choices, not universal requirements. Kozloski’s article on DEV Community describes that approach.

Which capabilities turn agent sessions into a coordinated workflow?
Give each task an identity and a finish line
A task should state its goal, relevant context, constraints, and acceptance criteria before an agent starts. Cards and SPECs are one way to do this; an issue, task record, or another format can work if it makes the intended outcome and completion conditions explicit. A chat transcript alone is a weak task record because it may not clearly separate the request from later discussion, decisions, and results.
Make agent and model choices visible
Record which agent or model is assigned and what tools it can use. Different tasks may call for different capabilities, but the choice should be deliberate and inspectable. Kozloski identifies model and agent selection as a design dimension; the cited material does not establish a general cost or quality ranking.

Run independent work in parallel—and isolate its files
Separate agent conversations do not necessarily mean separate working files. If two tasks can change the same checkout, one task may affect the other’s workspace. Git worktrees provide separate working directories associated with a repository, which can help keep independent changes apart. Microsoft’s VS Code agent-sessions guide distinguishes multiple sessions from sessions that use separate worktrees.

Worktrees have important limits. VS Code says they are not a security boundary. A new worktree starts from committed repository state and does not automatically include uncommitted changes or ignored files from the original working tree. Check that each task has the setup and files it needs before relying on its separate directory. VS Code’s session documentation explains the worktree behavior and limitations.

Product documentation offers examples of these capabilities, not proof of a shared ADE architecture. Microsoft documents parallel agent sessions and review workflows in VS Code; OpenAI’s Codex app announcement describes multiple agent threads, parallel work, review, and worktree-backed isolated copies.
Preserve decisions and task state across interruptions
Resumable work needs more than a model’s conversational context. It needs the task’s current status, relevant decisions, and a record of what remains. Kozloski proposes separate memory layers—vector, semantic, graph, and operational—because they answer different retrieval questions. That taxonomy is his design, not an industry consensus. The general goal is to retrieve the right context for the task without treating every prior conversation as equally relevant.

Put tool use behind legible boundaries
A coordinated workflow should make available tools and prerequisites clear, constrain task scope where feasible, and record tool versions and actions. Approval behavior should be understandable to the person responsible for the work. File separation helps avoid accidental overlap, but it does not by itself protect the host or repository from an agent with broad permissions; worktree isolation is not a security sandbox.

People need to inspect what an agent planned, which tools it used, what it changed, and what it produced. Review can be proportionate to risk, but traceability should remain. VS Code’s agent documentation describes reviewing agent changes and emphasizes validating them before integration. An agent’s completion message is not a substitute for checking the diff and testing the result. VS Code’s overview of AI agents explains the agent loop and related planning and review workflow.

How do IDE-centered, agent-enhanced, and ADE-style workflows compare?
These are workflow patterns, not mutually exclusive product categories. An IDE can host agent features, and an ADE-style control layer can still rely on an editor for code review and editing.
| Workflow pattern | Primary work unit | Parallel work and file separation | Context and traceability | Review and resumption |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional IDE-centered | Usually a person’s code-editing session or file | Parallel agent coordination and isolated working files are not inherent to the pattern | May depend on the person, editor state, and separate task notes | Review and resumption depend on the surrounding tools and team process |
| Agent-enhanced IDE | A person’s session with agent assistance | Some tools support multiple sessions; separate sessions do not necessarily have separate working files | Agent activity may be visible in the product, while cross-session task continuity varies | Some products provide review workflows; validate changes before integrating |
| ADE-style coordination | A defined task that persists across execution and review | Can coordinate concurrent tasks and use worktree isolation where supported; worktrees are not a security boundary | Designed to preserve task context, decisions, tool choices, and execution records | Designed to make output inspectable and work resumable; actual implementation varies |
The comparison describes design intent, not a ranking of products. The concrete capabilities documented by VS Code and the Codex app show that parts of this workflow exist in current tools, but they do not establish one standard definition of ADE.
When is an ADE-style setup worth building?
If your team runs only a few short agent tasks, an existing editor and agent workflow may be enough. A separate coordination layer adds value when work regularly spans interruptions, involves several independent tasks, or requires a reliable handoff and review trail. That is a practical adoption test, not a measured threshold.
- Start with task records: make goals, constraints, and acceptance criteria explicit.
- Add isolation when tasks overlap: use separate worktrees or another suitable mechanism, and account for uncommitted and ignored files.
- Preserve state that people need: record decisions, status, tool use, and remaining work rather than relying on chat history alone.
- Require review before integration: inspect changes and validate them in proportion to the risk.
The editor remains the place where people can inspect and work with code. The ADE framing adds the coordination around it: persistent task identity, agent execution, context, boundaries, and review.
