Yes. In April 2025, a fully autonomous drone from TU Delft’s Micro Air Vehicle Laboratory (MAVLab) defeated three former Drone Champions League world champions at the A2RL x DCL Autonomous Drone Championship in Abu Dhabi. MAVLab reported a 95.8 km/h top speed, while the organizer recorded the fastest run on its 170-metre AI Grand Challenge course: two laps, 22 gates and 17 seconds. Those are official event milestones, not independently certified Guinness-style world records.
What happened at the Abu Dhabi championship
MAVLab first won the event’s AI Grand Challenge and then advanced through a knockout tournament against human pilots. Its drone beat three former Drone Champions League (DCL) world champions, making the result a direct human-versus-autonomous-machine competition rather than a demonstration performed only by researchers.
The competition was held under organizer-controlled hardware and track conditions. That matters because earlier autonomous-drone victories were generally demonstrated on tracks designed and operated by the researchers themselves. In Abu Dhabi, teams entered an international event with a common racing platform and race conditions they did not fully control.

The AI Grand Challenge course
The Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), which organized the A2RL event, describes the AI Grand Challenge course as 170 metres long. MAVLab completed two laps through 22 gates in 17 seconds, the fastest time reported for that course. The organizer also called the event the world’s first AI-only drag race.
These claims describe specific competition achievements: the fastest course time recorded by the organizer and a first-of-its-kind AI-only race format. They do not establish a universal speed record for all drones or an independently certified world record.
How fast was the autonomous drone?
| Figure | What it measures | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 95.8 km/h | Maximum speed on MAVLab’s winding track | Reported by TU Delft MAVLab for its 2025 event drone |
| 17 seconds | Two laps through 22 gates | Fastest time on the 170-metre AI Grand Challenge course, according to ATRC/A2RL |
| 170 metres | Length of the AI Grand Challenge course | Organizer-stated course measurement |
| More than 150 km/h | Speeds reached by standardized drones in the broader race environment | Organizer-stated figure; it is not the MAVLab winding-course maximum |
The numbers are different kinds of measurements. The 95.8 km/h figure is a reported peak speed on a winding track. The 17-second figure is an elapsed time for a defined two-lap course with 22 gates. Neither should be treated as an average speed for every part of the race, and the broader “more than 150 km/h” statement applies to standardized drones in the wider race environment rather than specifically to MAVLab’s 95.8 km/h run.
How can a drone race with only one camera?
The standardized race drone used an NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX computer, a forward-facing camera and an inertial measurement unit (IMU). It received no human steering during the autonomous runs. The camera supplied visual information about gates, track geometry and the drone’s surroundings; the IMU supplied motion data such as changes in acceleration and rotation. Combining those streams lets an onboard system estimate where the drone is heading and how its movement is changing without relying on a human pilot’s view.

MAVLab’s control system used a deep neural network that sent commands directly to the motors instead of handing decisions to a conventional controller designed by a human. Direct motor control can let a learned policy exploit the aircraft’s physical limits, but it also leaves less room for a separate safety layer to correct a bad decision.
Why reinforcement learning was important
The team trained the policy with reinforcement learning. Rather than copying a pilot’s actions alone, the system learned through trial and error, receiving feedback that encouraged fast, successful flight and penalized mistakes. This approach is useful when the best maneuver is difficult to specify with hand-written rules.
ESA says the broader Guidance and Control Networks (G&CNets) concept began in its Advanced Concepts Team for spacecraft guidance. Behavioral cloning—training a network to imitate examples—can expose a simulation-to-reality gap: a policy that performs well in a virtual environment may fail when a real vehicle encounters differences in vibration, lighting, aerodynamics or timing. Reinforcement learning was used to make the network more resilient to unforeseen conditions during flight.

How this differs from the University of Zurich’s 2023 result
In 2023, a Nature paper reported that the University of Zurich’s Swift autonomous drone reached champion-level performance against three human racing champions and posted the fastest time on that test track. That was a major research demonstration, but it took place in a flight-lab environment controlled by the researchers.
| Comparison | Abu Dhabi, 2025 MAVLab | Zurich, 2023 Swift |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Organizer-run international competition | Researcher-controlled flight-lab test |
| Human benchmark | Three former DCL world champions in a knockout tournament | Three human racing champions |
| Sensing and autonomy | Forward camera, IMU and onboard autonomous control; no human input | Autonomous drone demonstrated in the published test setup |
| Performance metric | 95.8 km/h reported peak; 17 seconds for two laps and 22 gates on a 170-metre course | Fastest time on the reported test track |
| What changed | Teams faced event hardware and track conditions set by an organizer | Researchers controlled the experimental environment |
The Abu Dhabi race therefore extended autonomous-drone racing from a controlled laboratory benchmark into a formal competition. It does not invalidate the Zurich result; it tests autonomy under a different and more operationally demanding arrangement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Was this an official world record?
It was official in the narrower sense that ATRC/A2RL documented the competition’s fastest course time and the first AI-only drag race as event milestones. The available event statements do not establish independent Guinness-style certification, nor do they show that 95.8 km/h is the fastest speed ever recorded by any racing drone.
The safest description is: MAVLab set the fastest recorded time on the 2025 AI Grand Challenge course and helped stage the first organizer-described AI-only drag race, while beating three former world champions in the same event.

What the result proves—and what it does not
- It proves a competitive milestone: an autonomous system won a real tournament bracket against elite human pilots.
- It demonstrates onboard decision-making: the drone used its own computer, camera and IMU rather than a remote human pilot.
- It shows the value of reinforcement learning: training by trial and error helped the policy handle the gap between simulation and physical flight.
- It does not prove general superiority: one event does not show that autonomous drones win every track, weather condition or vehicle configuration.
- It does not establish universal records: the published figures are tied to this course, event and measurement method.
Why the race matters beyond drone sport
High-speed racing is a demanding test for robotics because the vehicle must perceive its surroundings, estimate its motion and react within fractions of a second. A mistake at a gate can end a run, while a conservative controller loses time. That makes racing a useful proving ground for algorithms intended for other fast, dynamic systems.
ESA scientific coordinator Dario Izzo said the achievement shows how “blue-sky research from ESA’s Advanced Concepts Team can lead to transformative applications – both in space and here on Earth.” The same design questions—guidance with limited sensors, control under uncertainty and reliable operation when conditions differ from training—also arise in spacecraft, inspection robots and other autonomous vehicles.
For consumers, an FPV racing drone or simulator can illustrate the basic experience, but those products are not the A2RL vehicle. The Abu Dhabi machine combined a standardized race platform with a specialized onboard neural controller, extensive training and a competition-specific course.
