Plants can absorb nitrogen as either ammonium (NH₄⁺) or nitrate (NO₃⁻). Neither form is universally best. Ammonium is positively charged and can be held on soil exchange sites, while nitrate stays dissolved in soil water and moves more readily with drainage. Soil microbes also convert ammonium to nitrate, so the form in a fertilizer may change during the growing season.

The responsible choice starts with a soil test and crop-specific local guidance. Soil pH, texture, drainage, oxygen, temperature, rainfall or irrigation, placement, timing, and the fertilizer’s other nutrients determine whether ammonium, nitrate, or a combination is most suitable.

Can plants use both ammonium and nitrate?

Yes. Plant roots can take up ammonium and nitrate directly. The common idea that plants require one universal form of nitrogen is incorrect. The useful question is which form will remain available in the root zone long enough for the specific crop, soil, and weather conditions.

Ammonium (NH₄⁺) is a cation, meaning it carries a positive charge. Nitrate (NO₃⁻) is an anion with a negative charge. That difference controls how each form behaves in soil before a root absorbs it.

Ammonium is retained more strongly at first

Many clay and organic-matter surfaces have negatively charged exchange sites. They can attract and hold positively charged ammonium, making it less immediately mobile than nitrate. Retention is not permanent: roots can remove ammonium, and microorganisms can transform it into nitrate.

Nitrate remains mobile in soil water

Nitrate generally stays in the soil solution rather than binding strongly to ordinary exchange sites. It can therefore move with percolating water below the root zone. That mobility can supply roots quickly when water and nitrogen demand coincide, but it also increases the risk of leaching after heavy rain or excessive irrigation.

How ammonium changes into nitrate

Soil microbes carry out nitrification, a two-stage process that converts ammonium first to nitrite and then to nitrate. Consequently, an ammonium fertilizer is often a temporary starting form rather than a permanent choice between “ammonium nutrition” and “nitrate nutrition.”

Conditions that speed nitrification

Nitrification generally proceeds faster in warm, moist soil with adequate oxygen. Soil pH also matters. University of Florida IFAS Extension describes the process as most rapid around pH 7 to 8 in its discussed context and slower at pH 5 or below. Those ranges describe that extension context, not a universal conversion timetable for every soil, climate, or product.

Conditions that slow or interrupt it

Cold soil, poor aeration, prolonged saturation, unsuitable moisture, and unfavorable pH can slow microbial conversion. If ammonium remains near the surface before being incorporated or transformed, other loss pathways can become important. The form applied today may therefore not be the form available to roots several weeks later.

Ammonium and nitrate compared

Factor Ammonium (NH₄⁺) Nitrate (NO₃⁻)
Direct plant uptake Plants can absorb it directly. Plants can absorb it directly.
Behavior in ordinary soil Its positive charge allows retention on negatively charged exchange sites; it can later be transformed to nitrate. Its negative charge keeps it relatively mobile in soil solution.
Main movement concern It is less mobile before transformation, but converted nitrate can move with water. It can move below the root zone with percolating water.
Important loss pathway Surface-applied ammoniacal material can lose ammonia gas under volatilization-favoring conditions; after nitrification, nitrate loss pathways apply. Leaching is a major concern; saturated, oxygen-poor soil can also cause denitrification.
Soil or root-zone reaction Ammonium uptake and nitrification can acidify the surrounding root environment or soil. Nitrate uptake has different charge-balance effects; nitrate fertilizer should not be assumed to correct acidic soil.
Practical advantage Retention may help where immediate nitrate movement is a concern, provided product and placement conditions limit volatilization. It is readily soluble and available in soil solution, but that same mobility can increase losses with water.

These are general tendencies, not a fertilizer prescription. A field’s drainage, texture, pH, weather, crop demand, and application method can outweigh the apparent advantage of either form.

How each form affects nitrogen losses

Ammonia volatilization from ammonium products

Ammonium left on the soil surface can be converted to ammonia gas and lost to the atmosphere when conditions favor volatilization. Higher pH increases that risk. Surface applications on residue or dry soil are especially dependent on subsequent conditions and incorporation, so follow the product label and local extension instructions rather than assuming that retained ammonium is automatically protected.

Nitrate leaching

Because nitrate travels with soil water, rainfall or irrigation that exceeds the root zone’s holding capacity can carry it downward. Coarse-textured or well-drained soils and applications made ahead of large water events generally present more opportunity for movement than carefully timed applications matched to crop uptake.

Denitrification in saturated soil

When pores remain water-filled and oxygen is scarce, microbes can convert nitrate to gases, including nitrous oxide and nitrogen. Those gases leave plant-available nitrogen unavailable to the crop. Avoiding excess application and managing timing around wet conditions reduce the opportunity for this loss, although drainage and weather may be outside a grower’s control.

How ammonium and nitrate influence pH

When plants absorb substantial ammonium, charge balance in the root system tends to release hydrogen ions, acidifying the surrounding root environment. Nitrification also produces acidity as microbes convert ammonium to nitrate. Repeated ammonium-based applications can therefore contribute to declining soil pH where the soil’s buffering capacity and other inputs do not offset the effect.

Nitrate uptake has a different charge-balance effect. That does not make nitrate fertilizer a liming material, and choosing nitrate should not replace a measured pH correction program. Test pH separately and use a locally recommended amendment rate if correction is needed.

When nitrate mobility is the larger risk

If the field is likely to receive heavy rain or irrigation soon after application, or if the soil is prone to rapid drainage, a retained ammonium source may reduce immediate movement compared with nitrate. That benefit is conditional: ammonium can later nitrify, and an unincorporated surface application can volatilize. Split applications, correct placement, and timing with crop uptake may matter more than the label’s initial form.

When rapid solution availability matters

Nitrate is already dissolved in soil water and can be taken up directly. That can be useful when an actively growing crop needs immediately available nitrogen and water movement is controlled. The same solubility makes rate and timing important; avoid applying more nitrate than the crop can use before the next substantial drainage event.

When soil is cold, wet, or poorly aerated

Cold conditions can slow microbial conversion of ammonium. Saturated conditions restrict oxygen and can slow nitrification while promoting denitrification once nitrate is present. These interacting effects mean that a form that looks advantageous under one moisture and temperature pattern may perform differently after a weather change.

When soil pH is already low

Account for the acidifying tendency of ammonium uptake and nitrification. A low-pH soil may require a liming or other corrective plan based on a soil test. Do not choose a nitrogen form solely as a substitute for that plan.

When the fertilizer supplies other nutrients

Some products carry nutrients in addition to nitrogen. If soil or leaf tests show a need for one of those nutrients, that requirement can legitimately influence source selection. Do not assume two products are interchangeable simply because their nitrogen percentages appear similar.

A responsible decision process

  1. Confirm that nitrogen is needed. Start with a soil test and the crop’s expected demand. University of Missouri Extension states: “A soil test is the best way to determine how much nitrogen fertilizer should be added to your soil.” Nitrogen recommendations may also depend on yield goal, soil organic matter, previous crop, and manure use.
  2. Check crop-specific guidance. Use recommendations from the extension service or agronomist serving your region and crop. University sources are often written for particular climates, soils, and production systems, so do not transfer a rate or timing instruction to a different crop without local confirmation.
  3. Assess water movement. Note soil texture, drainage, slope, expected rainfall, irrigation method, and whether the root zone is likely to stay saturated. These factors determine whether leaching or denitrification deserves priority.
  4. Measure and manage pH. A pH test is useful for understanding nitrogen transformations, but a basic pH kit does not measure all nutrient needs and does not replace a laboratory soil test.
  5. Match timing to uptake. Apply nitrogen when the crop can use it, and consider split applications where local guidance supports them. Avoid applying a large soluble dose immediately before a forecast water event.
  6. Choose placement deliberately. Follow the fertilizer label for incorporation, banding, injection, or surface application. Placement that keeps ammonium away from the atmosphere can reduce volatilization; placement and timing that keep nitrate in the active root zone can reduce leaching.
  7. Compare cost per unit of actual nitrogen. Divide the product cost by the pounds or kilograms of nitrogen supplied, then account for application charges and any valuable secondary nutrients. Cost per unit of actual nitrogen may be the primary consideration when crop response is similar and tests do not indicate a need for a particular accompanying nutrient.

What crop-specific evidence shows

Peach trees as a documented example

Penn State Extension guidance for peach trees reports that, when ammonium fertilizers are applied appropriately and nitrate leaching is minimized, responses to different nitrogen sources are similar in most cases. In that fruit-tree context, cost per unit of actual nitrogen may be the main deciding factor unless soil or leaf tests show a need for nutrients supplied by particular nitrate sources.

Application practices that reduce avoidable losses

Use the rate the crop can use

Excess nitrogen is vulnerable to loss regardless of its starting form. Base the amount on a soil test and local crop guidance, then account for organic matter, manure, previous legumes or other crops, and the yield goal where those recommendations use them.

Keep surface ammonium from volatilizing

Where a label or local recommendation calls for incorporation or another placement method, follow it. Pay particular attention to high-pH conditions and warm, drying weather, which can increase ammonia volatilization risk from surface-applied ammoniacal material.

Keep nitrate in the root zone

Time soluble nitrate applications to crop demand and avoid applying immediately before substantial rainfall or irrigation. On soils with rapid drainage, smaller or split applications may better match uptake when permitted by the crop’s production guidance.

Protect against saturated-soil losses

Do not treat a waterlogged field as if it had normal oxygen conditions. Saturation can promote denitrification once nitrate is available. Drainage management, weather-aware timing, and avoiding unnecessary nitrogen are the practical safeguards supported by the general loss pathways.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

“Ammonium is always better because soil holds it.”

Retention can reduce immediate movement, but ammonium may volatilize at the surface and is commonly converted to nitrate. Correction: evaluate placement, pH, temperature, oxygen, moisture, and the expected timing of nitrification instead of relying on charge alone.

“A result from one crop transfers to every crop.”

Extension recommendations are often crop- and region-specific. Correction: use the peach-tree evidence as an example, not a universal rule, and obtain guidance for the crop and location being managed.

What to monitor after application

  • Soil moisture and drainage after rainfall or irrigation, especially on coarse or poorly drained soils.
  • Soil pH over time where ammonium use is substantial or repeated.
  • Crop color, growth, and tissue or leaf-test results interpreted with local recommendations.
  • Whether the application coincided with conditions favorable to ammonia volatilization, leaching, or denitrification.
  • Records of product, rate, date, placement, weather, manure, previous crop, and yield goal so the next soil-test recommendation has usable context.

Bottom line for choosing ammonium or nitrate

Plants need usable nitrogen, not a universally superior label. Ammonium offers temporary retention on exchange sites but can acidify the root zone, volatilize when left at the surface, and convert to nitrate. Nitrate is immediately available in soil solution but can leach and can be denitrified in saturated, oxygen-poor soil. Start with a soil test, follow crop-specific local recommendations, and select the source, rate, placement, and timing that address the field’s actual risks.
