Amit Forlit is an Israeli private investigator whom U.S. prosecutors accuse of directing a hack-for-hire operation aimed at people connected to climate activism and climate litigation. He was arrested at London’s Heathrow Airport in April 2024 under an Interpol red notice. The criminal case remains allegation-based: Forlit has not been convicted, and the available filings do not establish a final U.S. trial outcome.
Extradition proceedings in England became the public route into the case. On April 30, 2025, a Westminster judge recommended sending Forlit to the United States and rejected his argument that the prosecution was politically motivated. Whether an appeal or transfer occurred afterward is not established here and can change as the British and U.S. dockets are updated.
What is Amit Forlit accused of doing?
The U.S. charges reported in the extradition materials are conspiracy to commit computer hacking, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud. Prosecutors allege that Forlit directed a campaign in which private communications were obtained and then used in public-relations and litigation efforts.
The extradition affidavit describes targets linked to climate activism and climate lawsuits. The indictment and supporting documents anonymized some people and entities, so the public record does not provide a reliable total number of people targeted. That uncertainty matters: the case describes an alleged method and selected targets, not a complete, proven map of a worldwide campaign.

How the alleged operation was organized
According to the U.S. extradition account and reporting on the British proceedings, the alleged sequence had several distinct roles:
- Target selection: A lobbying and public-relations firm allegedly identified people whose climate advocacy or litigation could affect its client’s interests.
- Transfer of target information: The firm allegedly sent names or target lists to Forlit or to a co-conspirator.
- Technical intrusion: Forlit allegedly arranged for hacking to be carried out through Aviram Azari, described in the filings and reporting as a subcontracted operator.
- Use of stolen material: The resulting communications were allegedly circulated to journalists and used through litigation or other influence channels.
This account is a prosecution allegation, not a judicial finding that every step occurred or that every person named in reporting knew about an intrusion.

Where DCI Group and ExxonMobil fit
Reporting during the January–April 2025 extradition proceedings identified the alleged commissioning firm as DCI Group and its oil-company client as ExxonMobil. The connection comes from extradition filings and journalism about anonymized parties; it is not a charge against either company in Forlit’s criminal case.
DCI Group and ExxonMobil have been described as denying wrongdoing. The distinction is legally important: prosecutors allege that a lobbying firm supplied objectives or targets, while the reporting identifies a corporate client behind that work. Neither DCI Group nor ExxonMobil was charged in the Forlit prosecution described here, and no finding in this case has established that either company authorized hacking.

Arrest and extradition timeline

An initial extradition attempt failed over a procedural timing issue. The April 2025 recommendation changed that stage of the proceedings, but the materials summarized here do not establish whether an appeal succeeded, whether a later transfer took place, or how the U.S. case ultimately proceeded.
The separate Farhad Azima civil case
F orlit’s name also appears in a civil dispute involving Farhad Azima, an aviation executive. In that litigation, a 2023 U.S. filing alleged that Forlit and other respondents obtained Azima’s private emails for use in related lawsuits. Forlit acknowledged retrieving emails but denied hacking them.

That admission and denial should not be collapsed into the criminal climate case. The Azima matter is a separate civil proceeding with a different factual setting and legal standard. It does, however, explain why Forlit was already known in litigation involving allegedly stolen electronic communications before the extradition dispute became public.

A 2024 report by The Independent said an unnamed Washington-based public-relations and lobbying firm allegedly paid one of Forlit’s companies $16 million—reported as £16 million, or approximately $20 million at the time—for intelligence work connected to an Argentinian debt matter. That amount concerns a separate allegation. It should not be presented as a proven payment for the climate-activist operation, and the report does not establish that the payment funded the conduct charged in the U.S. indictment.

Aviram Azari and the human impact described in court
Aviram Azari is identified in the alleged chain as the person through whom hacking work was subcontracted. At Azari’s sentencing hearing, Lee Wasserman, director of the Rockefeller Family Fund, described the experience of targeted climate advocates by saying, “It felt like Big Brother had arrived,” and that “citizens opposing powerful interests have their communications surveilled.”
The statement captures why the case has drawn attention beyond the technical question of how accounts were accessed: the alleged material was said to be gathered in a political and legal conflict, where private messages could be turned into media narratives or litigation leverage.
What is established, and what remains unresolved?
- Established procedural facts: Forlit was arrested in London in April 2024 under an Interpol red notice, and a UK judge recommended extradition on April 30, 2025.
- Prosecution allegations: U.S. prosecutors allege the three charged offenses and the target-selection, subcontracting and distribution sequence.
- Reported corporate connection: Journalism identified DCI Group as the alleged commissioning firm and ExxonMobil as its client; both were reported to deny wrongdoing and were not charged in Forlit’s case.
- Separate civil allegation: The Azima litigation alleged email hacking, while Forlit acknowledged retrieving emails and denied hacking.
- Not established by these proceedings: There is no conviction reported here, no reliable public count of climate activists targeted, and no established final appeal or transfer result after the April 2025 recommendation.
The safest way to understand the scandal is therefore to separate the allegations in the U.S. affidavit from facts determined at trial, distinguish the criminal extradition from the Azima civil litigation, and treat the DCI Group–ExxonMobil link as reported and disputed rather than adjudicated.
