When an American Truck Simulator mod is missing from Mod Manager, the usual cause is not the mod itself: manual files are in the wrong folder, a Workshop-only filter is hiding them, or the download is still inside an archive. Put manual packages in Documents/American Truck Simulator/mod (the folder is singular), clear any Workshop-only filter, make sure the package is in a supported form, and then check version metadata and Windows permissions.
The procedure below is aimed primarily at Windows and Steam installations, where these locations and controls are documented by SCS Software. Workshop subscriptions follow a different storage and management path from manually downloaded files.
Identify the symptom before changing files
The same complaint—“my mod does not show up”—can describe several different failures. Use the visible symptom and the mod’s source to choose the right branch instead of repeatedly reinstalling the same download.

Repair ATS mods in the correct order
- Close ATS completely. Exit to the desktop before moving or extracting files so Mod Manager does not retain an old directory view.
- Run the game once if the user folder has never been created. Start ATS, reach the main menu, exit, and then look in your user Documents directory. SCS support notes that the ATS folder may be generated after the first run.
- Open the singular
modfolder under the ATS Documents directory. The normal Windows location isDocuments/American Truck Simulator/mod. It is under your user Documents tree, not beside the game executable in the Steam installation directory. If only the parent ATS folder exists, create a folder named exactlymodthere. - Put the manual package directly in that folder. Copy the supported
.scsfile, a recognized package archive, or a package directory intomod. Do not leave the usable file buried in a download folder created by an extractor. - Open Mod Manager and remove a Workshop-only restriction. Use the filter control in Mod Manager and select the view that includes local/manual packages, not only Steam Workshop subscriptions. The exact wording can vary with the game build, but the relevant control is the one that limits the list to Workshop content.
- Recheck the package form. Extract a
.rardownload. For a.zip, inspect its contents: if it is an outer download archive containing the actual.scspackage or package directory, extract that inner item intomod. SCS documentation also allows package archives and normal directories, so do not unpack a package that ATS already recognizes unless the download instructions require it. - Read the compatibility state. A package can be physically present and still unusable when its declared game version does not match the running ATS version. In that case, find a compatible release from the mod author; changing the folder will not remove the version requirement.
- Check Windows access rights if discovery still fails. Confirm that your Windows account has read access to the ATS Documents folder and that ATS is being launched consistently with the same privilege level. NTFS permissions or an administrator/non-administrator mismatch can prevent the game from reading an otherwise correct path.
Use the Documents folder, not the Steam installation folder
The most important distinction is between the program’s installation files and the user’s ATS data. SCS forum guidance states that “the mod (not mods) folder is under my documents and not under steam.” A manually downloaded package placed under a Steam library directory can be perfectly intact and still never enter the normal manual-mod scan.

Navigate through your Windows user profile to Documents, open American Truck Simulator, and then open or create mod. The folder name is singular. Do not create mods, and do not create a parallel folder in the Steam installation directory. If ATS has never been launched on that Windows account, run it once first; the parent folder may not exist until the initial run completes.
When creating the folder yourself, create it only inside the user ATS Documents directory. After copying a package, restart ATS and inspect Mod Manager rather than assuming that the presence of a file in File Explorer proves that the game can use it.

Mod Manager can display a restricted list containing only Steam Workshop items. That view makes valid manual packages look as if they were never installed. If Workshop subscriptions are visible but a file copied from a download is not, check the filter before downloading the mod again.
Open ATS Mod Manager, locate its source or content filter, and switch from the Workshop-only view to the view that includes local or all packages. Leave the filter broad while diagnosing the problem. Once the manual item appears, you can use narrower views for routine management.
This is a display problem, not a file-conversion problem: changing the filter does not move files or turn a Workshop item into a manual package. It simply allows the manager to show both sources.

Make the downloaded package visible to ATS
File extensions tell you what to do next, but the outer download and the actual mod package are not always the same thing.

After extraction, open the resulting folders. If you see a wrapper such as a download-name folder containing the real .scs file, move the real package up so it is directly under mod. Do not leave it several levels deep in an archive’s documentation, screenshots, or readme directory. Keep the original readme because it may specify dependencies or a required load order, but only the package needs to be in the scanned location.
SCS Modding documentation describes Mod Manager packages as zip archives or ordinary directories that can carry metadata. Steam installation guidance separately warns that downloaded .zip and .rar files may need extraction. The practical rule is to determine whether your archive is already the package ATS understands or merely a container supplied by the download author.
Workshop subscriptions and manual downloads are different systems
A Steam Workshop subscription is downloaded automatically and managed by Steam. Its files do not have to appear as ordinary files in Documents/American Truck Simulator/mod, and copying Workshop content into that folder can create duplicate or confusing entries.
For a Workshop item, verify that the subscription is active in Steam, allow Steam to finish downloading it, and then look for the item in Mod Manager with the Workshop-inclusive filter selected. For a manual download, ignore the Workshop storage location and follow the Documents-folder procedure instead. Troubleshooting one source as though it were the other often leads to a false conclusion that the game is not scanning correctly.

If a Workshop item used to be listed but disappears, the cause may be a cancelled subscription, a removed Workshop item, or a Steam download problem. Those cases are separate from a manual package being in the wrong folder and need to be checked in Steam or in the item’s documentation.
Understand version metadata and the “listed but unusable” case
Being listed is not the same as being compatible. SCS Modding Wiki guidance says that when a mod’s declared game version does not match any version in the running game, the user cannot use the mod and must wait for the author to update it.
This commonly appears after ATS updates. The file remains in the correct folder, Mod Manager can read its metadata, and the entry may carry an incompatibility warning. Moving it, renaming it, or disabling the Workshop filter cannot repair a declaration that does not include your game version. Look for a release from the author that explicitly supports the ATS version you are running.
Keep the two diagnoses separate:
- Missing entirely: investigate folder, filter, archive, and permissions.
- Visible but incompatible: investigate the mod’s declared versions and the author’s update status.
Do not force-enable an incompatible package merely to make the warning disappear. An update can change data structures, definitions, or dependencies even when the filename has not changed.
Check Windows permissions without moving the mod again
When the path and package are correct but ATS still cannot discover the item, inspect NTFS access on the ATS Documents folder and its mod subfolder. Your Windows account needs permission to read the directory and the package files.

An administrator/non-administrator mismatch can also matter. For example, launching the game elevated while the files are owned or restricted under a different account can produce behavior that looks like a missing mod. Test the game and File Explorer under the same Windows account and avoid storing the package in a location your account cannot read.
Do not solve an access problem by granting broad permissions to the entire drive. Check the specific ATS folder, preserve normal Windows security settings, and retest after correcting only the missing read access. If permissions are managed by a work or family computer administrator, that person may need to restore access.

Choose the right branch for common failures
Manual mod is absent, while Workshop items are present
Clear the Workshop-only filter, then verify the singular Documents path. If the entry remains absent, inspect whether the download is still a .rar or an outer .zip, and expose the actual package directly under mod.
Nothing appears, including Workshop items
First confirm that ATS is using the expected Windows user profile and that you are opening the Mod Manager for the same game installation you launched. Run ATS once, close it, and verify that the parent Documents folder exists. Then check whether a restrictive filter is hiding every source.
The manual file is listed but cannot be activated
Treat this as a compatibility or dependency issue rather than a location issue. Compare the mod’s declared ATS version with the running version and read the author’s installation notes for required companion packages or load order.

The file is in the Steam library folder
Move the manual package to Documents/American Truck Simulator/mod. Do not leave a second copy in the Steam installation directory while testing; duplicate copies make it harder to tell which location ATS is reading.

Check the game-version declaration first. An ATS update can leave the file untouched while making its metadata incompatible. If it is a Workshop item, also confirm that the subscription and Steam download still exist.
Cases this checklist cannot prove by itself
A correctly placed package can still fail for reasons that are specific to that mod. A broken or incomplete download, a Workshop item removed by its author, missing dependencies, and load-order conflicts all require the mod’s own documentation or ATS diagnostic logs. These failures are different from a package that is completely absent from Mod Manager.
If the entry appears but activating it causes a crash, missing textures, missing definitions, or other in-game errors, record the exact mod name and warning, disable only that package, and follow the author’s dependency and load-order instructions. Do not keep changing the global folder structure when the manager is already proving that it can read the package.
Windows is the documented baseline
The folder and permission guidance above is strongest for Windows and Steam, which are the environments covered by the cited SCS support discussions. Linux and macOS use different user-data locations and may apply different permission rules. Do not copy the Windows path blindly on those platforms; use the platform-specific ATS user directory and the installation instructions for that operating system.

The source of the mod also matters on every platform: Workshop content remains Steam-managed, while a manually downloaded package must be placed where that platform’s ATS user-data scan expects it.
