There is no universally best American Express card. Choose Gold if dining and groceries are your biggest expenses, Blue Cash Preferred if you want grocery and streaming cash back, Platinum if you will use premium travel benefits, a Delta card if Delta loyalty drives your trips, or Hilton Honors if you regularly stay at Hilton properties and want a hotel card with no annual fee.
Start with the rewards you can use repeatedly, then test the annual fee, spending caps, required booking channels and credits you will genuinely redeem. Treat any welcome offer as a temporary bonus, not as the reason to keep a card for years.
Quick decision tree
- Mostly restaurants and U.S. supermarkets? Consider American Express Gold. Its points structure is strongest when you can use the food categories and its recurring credits.
- Want straightforward cash back on groceries, streaming and transit? Blue Cash Preferred is the more direct fit, especially if your supermarket spending stays within its annual cap.
- Fly often and value lounges, premium travel services and hotel credits? Platinum can make sense, but only after you confirm that your usable benefits justify its $895 annual fee.
- Do you repeatedly fly Delta? Compare Delta Gold for basic airline benefits with Delta Platinum if a companion certificate and a Medallion-status head start match your travel pattern.
- Stay with Hilton and want no annual fee? Hilton Honors provides Hilton points, bonus categories and complimentary Silver status without an annual fee.
American Express describes Gold as a possible fit for “foodies and everyday spenders” and Platinum as a better fit for frequent travelers who want premium lifestyle benefits. That distinction is more useful than trying to rank the cards in the abstract.
How the cards differ at a glance
| Card | Primary reward currency | Best-aligned spending or loyalty | Distinctive benefits in the 2026 materials | Key constraint to check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gold | Membership Rewards points | Restaurants and U.S. supermarkets | Dining, Uber, Resy and Dunkin’ credits; 5X prepaid hotels through Amex Travel | Category caps and credit eligibility terms |
| Platinum | Membership Rewards points | Frequent travel and premium benefits | 1,550+ lounges; 5X eligible prepaid flights and hotels through Amex Travel; up to $600 in annual hotel statement credits | Very high annual fee and benefits that require eligible bookings or use |
| Blue Cash Preferred | Cash back | U.S. supermarkets, select streaming and transit | 6% supermarket cash back on up to $6,000 per year; 6% on select streaming; 3% on transit | Supermarket rewards stop after the annual cap; $95 fee after the introductory first year |
| Delta Gold | Delta-oriented rewards | Delta flyers seeking core airline conveniences | Free checked bags and priority boarding | Value depends on how often you fly Delta and use those benefits |
| Delta Platinum | Delta-oriented rewards | Delta loyalists who can use higher-tier travel benefits | Companion certificate and a Medallion-status head start, plus the core Delta benefits described for the lineup | Benefits are concentrated in Delta travel |
| Hilton Honors | Hilton Honors points | Hilton stays and everyday purchases in its bonus categories | No annual fee; 7X on eligible Hilton purchases; 5X at U.S. restaurants, gas stations and supermarkets; complimentary Silver status | Rewards are most useful when you redeem with Hilton |
American Express Gold: the food-and-everyday-spend option
What you earn
The 2026 Gold materials list 4X Membership Rewards points at restaurants worldwide, up to the stated $50,000 limit, and 4X at U.S. supermarkets, up to the stated $25,000 limit. The card also lists 5X points on prepaid hotels booked through American Express Travel. These are category-specific rewards: a purchase must qualify under the card’s terms, and the supermarket benefit is specifically for U.S. supermarkets rather than every grocery purchase.

- 【Durable Materials】: Our credit card organizer is made of water-resistant and wear-resistant PU, reinforced with sealed edges and durable PVC credit card sleeves. It is scratch-resistant and water-repellent, resistant to dust and sweat, and easy to clean. The edges of the credit card holder are reinforced to provide the advantages of wrinkle resistance and crack resistance.
- 【RFID Blocking】The credit card holder has an anti-shield lining, which can effectively block the electronic scanning instrument from illegally scanning the credit card in the card holder to protect the security of your RFID chip card.
- 【Easy to Find & Read】The internal translucent anti-magnetic PVC card page makes it easy for you to find and read card information and quickly find the card you need.
- 【Large capacity / Multipurpose】A total of 32 card slots, each card can hold 3 cards. A total of 96 card slots, fully meet your needs for card storage. You can hold your important customer business cards, credit cards, debit cards, ID cards, membership cards, VIP cards, invoices, receipts, etc. to prevent loss and damage.
- This is the best choice to keep your credit card and business card organized and easy to manage. Can be used to store credit cards or business cards that are important but not commonly used.
Credits that can offset the fee
Gold’s annual fee is $325. The rewards page lists a $120 Dining Credit, $120 in Uber Cash, a $100 Resy Credit and an $84 Dunkin’ Credit. The combined face value is $424, but that is not automatic savings. Each credit has its own enrollment, merchant, timing or transaction requirements, and unused amounts generally do not become cash. Value the credits at what you would have spent anyway, not at their headline amounts.
For example, someone who already pays for qualifying dining, uses the eligible Uber benefit, visits participating Resy restaurants and buys qualifying Dunkin’ purchases may be able to use most of the listed credits. Someone who would not make those purchases should assign little or no value to the corresponding credit.
Who should choose Gold
- Households with substantial restaurant and U.S.-supermarket spending.
- People who prefer transferable-style points for travel rather than a fixed cash-back statement credit.
- Cardholders able to use several of the listed credits naturally and consistently.
Gold is less compelling when your grocery spending is below the category cap, you rarely dine out, or the credits would cause extra spending. It also requires accepting points rather than cash back; the practical value depends on how you redeem them.

Core travel rewards and access
Platinum carries an $895 annual fee in the 2026 product catalog and comparison. It lists 5X points on eligible prepaid flights and hotels booked through American Express Travel, access to more than 1,550 airport lounges, and up to $600 in annual hotel statement credits.
The lounge figure describes the size of the stated access network, not a guarantee that every lounge is available at every airport or that every visit will be convenient. The hotel credit is also conditional: eligible properties, booking channels and other terms determine whether a charge qualifies. Confirm the current benefit rules before assigning the full $600 to your personal value calculation.

When the fee can make sense
If you can use the entire $600 hotel credit, $295 of the $895 fee remains to be justified by lounge visits, flight and hotel points, and other premium benefits. That is a break-even framework, not a promise of value: a credit you would not otherwise use is worth less than its face amount, and lounge value varies with your airport schedule and alternatives.
Who should choose Platinum
- Frequent travelers who can book eligible prepaid flights or hotels through American Express Travel.
- People who will visit airport lounges often enough to replace paid food, quiet work space or alternative lounge access.
- Travelers who can use the hotel credit without changing destinations or paying inflated rates merely to trigger it.
Platinum is usually a poor fit for someone who travels only a few times a year, books through channels that do not qualify for the bonus, or wants strong everyday grocery and dining returns. In those cases, the $895 fee can overwhelm benefits that look valuable on paper.

| Question | Gold points toward | Platinum points toward |
|---|---|---|
| Where is your recurring spend? | Restaurants and U.S. supermarkets | Eligible prepaid flights and hotels through American Express Travel |
| Which fee must you overcome? | $325 annual fee | $895 annual fee |
| Which benefits are easiest to waste? | Dining, Uber, Resy and Dunkin’ credits if you would not use those merchants | Hotel credit and lounge access if your trips do not align with the terms or network |
| What type of traveler benefits? | Food-focused rewards with selected lifestyle credits | Premium airport and hotel benefits concentrated around travel |
Choose Gold when food spending is the reliable engine of your rewards. Choose Platinum when travel access and premium benefits, rather than restaurant and supermarket multipliers, are the reason you are applying. Holding both can be rational only when you can independently use each card’s categories and credits; otherwise, the overlap can create two fees for benefits you would have received from one card.
Blue Cash Preferred: cash back for groceries, streaming and transit
Published earning structure
Blue Cash Preferred offers 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year, 6% on select streaming services and 3% on transit. Its annual fee is $95 after the introductory first year.
The supermarket category has a clear ceiling: at the full $6,000 eligible spend, the 6% rate produces up to $360 in supermarket cash back before considering other categories or the annual fee. After the $95 fee, that supermarket portion alone would leave $265, assuming every purchase qualifies and the fee is the only cost being offset. Spending above the cap earns according to the card’s terms rather than continuing at 6%, so do not model unlimited grocery rewards.

- Material: Genuine Cowhide Leather and PVC card slots.
- Size: 7.48"*3.54"*0.98" (19*9*2.5 CM)
- Large Capacity: The card holder has 60 cards slots and 2 ID Windows. It is enough room for your ID card, credit cards, gift cards and dicounted cards. Small size is perfect to fit in your pockets or handbags.

- Great Gift: Great gift for mother, daughter, grandmother and so on.
Who should choose it instead of Gold
Blue Cash Preferred is the cleaner choice when you want cash back rather than Membership Rewards points, your largest recurring bills are groceries and eligible streaming, and you can use transit benefits. It can also be easier to value: a dollar of cash back is not dependent on finding a particular travel redemption.

Gold may still win for a household with substantial restaurant spending, meaningful use of its credits and a preference for points. Blue Cash Preferred may win for a household that rarely uses Gold’s partner credits or does not want to manage points. Compare your actual annual supermarket spend with the $6,000 cap before deciding.
Delta Gold and Delta Platinum: choose by airline loyalty
Delta Gold
American Express positions Delta Gold as the lower-fee option in its comparison, with free checked bags and priority boarding. Those benefits matter most when you regularly check luggage or value earlier boarding on Delta-operated trips. If you fly Delta only occasionally, calculate the number of trips on which you would otherwise pay for a bag or place a value on priority boarding; do not assume the benefits repay a fee automatically.
Delta Platinum
Delta Platinum adds a companion certificate and a Medallion-status head start. The certificate can be valuable only when your itinerary, fare rules, companion and travel timing satisfy its terms. The status head start matters to travelers who fly Delta enough to pursue or retain status; it is less useful if Delta is just one of several airlines you use.
How to decide between the Delta cards
- Count your Delta trips and checked-bag occasions over a normal year.
- Check whether you can realistically use the companion certificate before it expires and under its restrictions.
- Decide whether a Medallion-status head start changes your travel plan or merely sounds attractive.
- Compare the resulting value with the current fee shown on the application page; the supplied comparison does not establish a single fee figure for either Delta card.
American Express summarizes the choice this way: it depends on how often you fly Delta and which perks match your travel rhythm and loyalty goals.

Hilton Honors: a no-annual-fee hotel card
The Hilton Honors Card has no annual fee in the listed product information. It earns 7X Hilton Honors points on eligible Hilton purchases, 5X at U.S. restaurants, gas stations and supermarkets, and includes complimentary Hilton Honors Silver status.
This card is most coherent for someone who already chooses Hilton properties. The points are concentrated in Hilton’s program, so their practical value depends on having Hilton stays and accepting the program’s redemption options. Silver status can add convenience during those stays, but it should not be treated as a universal travel benefit when you mostly book other hotel groups.
Because there is no annual fee, the decision is less about recovering a fixed cost and more about whether Hilton rewards and status are useful to you. Compare the card’s bonus categories with your existing wallet so you do not move spending merely to collect points you will not redeem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A framework for choosing your card
1. Separate points from cash back
Gold and Platinum earn Membership Rewards points; Delta and Hilton cards concentrate rewards in their respective travel programs; Blue Cash Preferred pays cash back. Points can support travel goals but require a redemption decision. Cash back is simpler and easier to budget. Decide which outcome you actually want before comparing headline multipliers.
2. Calculate usable value, not advertised value
For each card, list only benefits you would use without changing your behavior. For Gold, that may include qualifying dining or Uber purchases already in your budget. For Platinum, it may include hotel bookings through the required channel and lounge visits on trips you already plan. Subtract the annual fee from that realistic value, then add an estimate for rewards earned at your normal spending level.
Best Value

- SLIM BODY, LARGE CAPACITY: This mens minimalist wallet holds up to 12+ cards. The aluminium chamber holds 6-8 and the leather flap holds 4-6 (1 ID window included). There are also removable money clips on the back capable of holding 15+ cash.
- CLEAR ID WINDOW: On the inside of the carbon fiber wallet, which has an ID card holder slot, which allows you to swipe the card without removing the card. It can be used to store ID card, work card, driver license, access card, traffic card, etc.
- RFID BLOCKING: This rfid wallet for men embeds a chip in the aluminum card case to block unknown scanning devices from scanning your credit cards, debit cards, and driver's licenses, maximizing the protection of your personal property.
- PERFECT PRESENT IDEA: This leather wallet is packaged in a beautiful premium box and it is great choice for men. It is a perfect credit card wallet for your friend, lover, parent or yourself on special Days.
3. Apply every cap and category definition
- Gold lists limits of up to $50,000 for restaurant rewards and up to $25,000 for U.S.-supermarket rewards.
- Blue Cash Preferred pays its 6% U.S.-supermarket rate only on up to $6,000 per year.
- “Select streaming,” “eligible Hilton purchases,” “eligible prepaid” travel and U.S.-supermarket wording are narrower than everyday descriptions. Read the merchant and transaction definitions before projecting returns.
4. Check booking-channel requirements
Platinum’s 5X travel rate applies to eligible prepaid flights and hotels through American Express Travel, and Gold’s hotel rate applies to prepaid hotels through that channel. A cheaper booking elsewhere may earn a different rate. Make the booking-channel choice part of your comparison rather than assuming every travel purchase qualifies.
5. Avoid loyalty concentration you will not use
Delta cards make the most sense when Delta is a meaningful share of your flying. Hilton Honors makes the most sense when Hilton is a meaningful share of your hotel stays. If your travel is spread across airlines or hotel groups, a general-purpose points card may be easier to use, while Blue Cash Preferred remains the straightforward option for cash back on its covered categories.
Credits, enrollment and other terms that change the math
- Enrollment: Some credits require you to enroll before a transaction qualifies.
- Eligible merchants: A purchase at a familiar brand may not qualify if it is processed by an excluded location, delivery service or intermediary.
- Booking channels: The travel multipliers and Platinum hotel credit can depend on booking through the specified American Express channel or eligible properties.
- Timing: Credits may be monthly, periodic or annual and may expire without rollover. Confirm the current terms for the benefit and your cardmember year.
- Redemption value: Membership Rewards, Delta and Hilton points do not have one universal cash value. Their usefulness depends on the redemption you select.
Paying interest on a revolving balance can erase the value of rewards. A rewards card is only advantageous when you can manage the balance and still meet your normal budget.

American Express welcome offers change by card, applicant and date. The figures above describe durable earning rates, fees and benefits rather than a temporary sign-up promotion. Compare an offer’s spending requirement with purchases you already expect to make, and check eligibility language before applying. Never keep an expensive card solely because its initial bonus looked large if the ongoing benefits do not fit your spending and travel habits.
Bottom line
Gold is the focused food-and-lifestyle choice, Platinum is the premium travel package, Blue Cash Preferred is the capped grocery-and-streaming cash-back choice, Delta Gold and Platinum reward concentrated Delta loyalty at different benefit levels, and Hilton Honors is the no-annual-fee option for Hilton regulars. The right application is the one whose recurring rewards and benefits you can use at their stated terms after the annual fee—not the card with the most impressive headline multiplier.
