American automakers are not making a single turn back to gasoline. They are keeping or expanding combustion options while shifting investment toward vehicles and powertrains they expect to sell profitably, and continuing to develop hybrids, range-extended vehicles and battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). Ford and Stellantis illustrate the strategy: more choice across a lineup, not a blanket retreat from EVs.
Why automakers are adding or retaining combustion options
The companies’ explanations center on three overlapping pressures: customer demand as they understand it, expected returns on investment, and uncertainty about how markets and policy will evolve. Those are company rationales, not proof that U.S. consumers overall have shifted back to gasoline vehicles.
- Match powertrains to different uses. Automakers are planning combinations of engines, hybrids, range-extended EVs and BEVs rather than relying on one technology for every vehicle type.
- Direct capital toward expected returns. Ford says it is moving investment toward areas including trucks, vans, hybrids and energy storage while narrowing pure-EV development toward smaller, more affordable models.
- Retain flexibility as conditions change. A May 18, 2026 Federal Register proposed-rule document situates automaker changes amid policy, regulatory, legislative and marketplace shifts. It is a proposed-rule document, not a complete account of which final federal rules apply to each vehicle category.
Ford CEO Jim Farley described the company’s position this way: “The operating reality has changed, and we are redeploying capital into higher-return growth opportunities: Ford Pro, our market-leading trucks and vans, hybrids and high-margin opportunities like our new battery energy storage business.” That is Ford’s stated assessment of its own opportunities, not independent evidence that all automakers face the same economics.
What Ford and Stellantis have announced
| Automaker and announcement | What it says | How to read the figures |
|---|---|---|
| Ford, December 15, 2025 | Expand powertrain choice, including hybrids and extended-range electric propulsion; focus pure-EV development on smaller, affordable models; redirect capital toward Ford Pro, trucks, vans, hybrids and energy storage. | Ford’s target is for hybrids, extended-range EVs and EVs combined to account for about 50% of global volume by 2030, compared with 17% at the time of the announcement. It is a global target spanning three categories, not a U.S. target or a combustion-vehicle target. |
| Stellantis, October 2025 | Announced about $13 billion in U.S. investment, an all-new four-cylinder engine and five new vehicles. It also described a range-extended EV and an internal-combustion large SUV planned for production in Warren beginning in 2028. | The investment and production details are announced plans, not completed investment or vehicles already in production. |
| Stellantis, May 21, 2026 | Its FaSTLAne 2030 plan lists launches across BEVs, plug-in hybrids or range-extended EVs, hybrids, and ICE or mild-hybrid vehicles. | The plan lists 39 ICE/mild-hybrid launches through 2030. That is a planned global launch count, not a measure of U.S. sales, consumer demand or market share. |
“Combustion” does not mean every vehicle is a gas-only car
The plans cover several distinct powertrains, so the categories matter:

- Simple design: delicate and small, simple atmosphere, beautiful workmanship, every detail is clearly visible.
- Package includes: 1 set of DIY power car accessories.
- Internal-combustion engine (ICE): A vehicle propelled by an engine that burns fuel. The Stellantis Warren plan specifies an internal-combustion large SUV.
- Mild hybrid or hybrid: These retain an engine while incorporating electric assistance or a hybrid system. They are not equivalent to a BEV.
- Plug-in hybrid: Combines an engine with a rechargeable electric system.
- Range-extended EV: A vehicle described in the announcements as electric propulsion with an additional range-extending powertrain. It should not be counted as a conventional ICE vehicle or assumed to be a BEV.
- BEV: A battery-electric vehicle. Ford and Stellantis both continue to include BEVs in their plans.
For that reason, Ford’s 50% target cannot be described as a target for gasoline cars: it combines hybrids, extended-range EVs and EVs. Likewise, the Stellantis figure of 39 combines ICE and mild-hybrid launches, and its broader plan includes other powertrains.
What these announcements do—and do not—show
They show that two major U.S. automakers are pursuing mixed powertrain portfolios, with Stellantis announcing specific U.S. engine and vehicle plans and Ford describing a global allocation of capital and product priorities. They do not establish that American buyers as a whole are returning to combustion vehicles: launch counts, investment announcements and a company’s global target are not U.S. sales data or a consumer survey.

The plans also do not show that automakers have abandoned EVs. Ford says it will continue pure-EV development, focused on smaller, affordable models, and Stellantis’ 2030 launch mix includes BEVs. More combustion investment in a particular segment can coexist with electric development elsewhere in a company’s lineup.

- Powertrain: Is the announcement about ICE, mild hybrid, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, range-extended EV or BEV?
- Scope: Is it a U.S. production plan, a global launch count or a global volume target?
- Status: Is the figure an investment announcement, a planned launch, a target or an actual sale?
- Timing and location: What production date and facility, if any, has the company named?
- Evidence of demand: Does the claim rely on company statements, or is it supported by dated sales data or a measured survey?
Applied to the announcements here, Ford’s target is global and combines three powertrain categories; Stellantis’ 39 launches are a global plan; and the Warren production timing is planned. None should be recast as a measured change in U.S. consumer purchases.
