The U.S. public DC fast-charging network exceeded 80,000 ports in the third quarter of 2026, according to Paren. The milestone covers 14,614 operating stations and reflects 4,106 ports opened during the quarter—but it does not include every public Level 2 charger.

What the 80,000-port milestone measures

Paren counted more than 80,000 public DC fast-charging ports at 14,614 U.S. stations in Q3 2026. A port is an individual connector position that can serve one vehicle; a station is the location containing one or more ports. During the quarter, operators opened 664 stations and 4,106 ports.

The figure is specific to Paren’s Q3 2026 methodology for operating DC fast-charging equipment. It should not be added to the larger nationwide count of public Level 2 and DC ports reported through the Department of Energy’s Alternative Fueling Station Locator. The Joint Office growth chart based on that locator can include ports that are available or temporarily unavailable, while Paren says it updated its methodology to capture operating stations more accurately.

Expansion slowed, but new locations are larger and more powerful

The network reached the milestone while adding capacity more slowly than in 2025. Through Q3, operators opened 2,158 stations, about 20% fewer than the 2,696 opened through Q3 2025. Port additions fell about 9%, from 13,600 to 12,354.

Measure through Q3 2025 2026 Change
New stations 2,696 2,158 About 20% fewer
New ports 13,600 12,354 About 9% fewer

Fewer sites does not mean the new buildout is smaller at each location. New non-Tesla sites averaged 5.0 ports. Seventy-three percent of all new ports were rated for at least 250 kilowatts, and 35% of new non-Tesla ports were rated at 400 kW or more.

A port’s rating is a ceiling, not a promise that every vehicle will charge at that speed. The vehicle’s battery-management system, state of charge, temperature, charging curve and the station’s power-sharing design can all reduce the rate. A vehicle that accepts less power cannot use the full output of a 250 kW or 400 kW cabinet.

Which operators added the most ports?

Tesla added the largest number of ports in Q3, although its share of the installed U.S. base declined as other networks expanded. The figures below are Q3 additions reported by Paren.

Tesla represented 49.3% of the installed public DC fast-charging base after the quarter. That share slipped because competing networks added capacity faster relative to their existing footprints. The available figures establish Tesla as the largest absolute contributor in Q3, but they do not provide enough operator-by-operator denominator data to name a fastest-growing network by percentage.

Reliability is high nationally, while demand keeps rising

Paren recorded 50.4 million public fast-charging sessions in Q3 2026. National utilization was 15.9%, and the national reliability score was 93.9. Fifty of the 52 states and territories measured scored at least 90 for reliability.

Utilization describes how heavily equipment is used over a period; it is not a direct measurement of how long a driver will wait. A busy urban site can have queues even when statewide utilization is moderate, while a rural station can show low utilization and still be essential for long-distance travel. Drivers should check live availability and, where available, the number of occupied stalls before detouring to a station.

EVIQO Level 2 EV Charger J1772 40A NEMA 14-50 - 240V Wall Charging Station
  • WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
  • PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
  • CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
  • SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.

“Public charging must work for people who have no interest in troubleshooting equipment or becoming experts in charging networks,” wrote Tom Moloughney, host and creator of State Of Charge and owner of EVChargingStations.com.

Why connector compatibility still matters

More ports do not automatically mean every EV can use every station. Compatibility depends on the connector fitted to the vehicle, the plug installed at the station, the vehicle’s software and any adapter approved for that specific combination.

  • NACS: The connector used by Tesla’s fast-charging network and increasingly offered or supported by other vehicles and networks.
  • CCS1: A common North American fast-charging connector still fitted to many EVs.
  • CHAdeMO: An older standard that remains at some stations but is less common in new installations.

The Department of Energy says agencies and private companies are collaborating on adapter and connector standards as part of a more interoperable network. That work does not remove the need to verify compatibility before a trip.

How to confirm that a fast charger will work with your EV

  1. Identify your vehicle’s inlet. Check the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s charging information for NACS, CCS1 or CHAdeMO support.
  2. Check the station’s plug and power rating. A station may advertise several connector types, but an individual stall may offer only one.
  3. Verify adapter approval. Use only an adapter listed as compatible by the vehicle manufacturer or charging operator. An adapter can change the physical connector, but it cannot make a vehicle accept a charging standard or power level it does not support.
  4. Review live status before driving there. Confirm that the stall is online, available and not marked temporarily unavailable.
  5. Check payment and access requirements. Some stations support tap-to-pay, while others require an app, account or network membership.
  6. Plan a backup stop. Reliability is high nationally, but a failed connector, queue or local outage can still affect an individual trip.

What the milestone means for drivers

Crossing 80,000 public DC fast-charging ports shows that the U.S. network has reached meaningful scale. The more important change is qualitative: construction is concentrating on larger sites and higher-power equipment even as the number of new locations has moderated.

For drivers, the practical benefits will depend on where that capacity is built, whether a route has the right connector, and whether a vehicle can use the advertised power. The Q3 figures point to a network that is expanding, generally reliable and increasingly capable of faster charging, but still not uniform enough to make connector checks and live station-status checks optional.
