Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) is a semiconductor and computing technology company. It makes processors, graphics and AI accelerators, networking and embedded-computing products, and related software for PCs, data centers, gaming, and specialized systems.
What does AMD stand for?
AMD stands for Advanced Micro Devices. In its FY2025 Form 10-K, filed February 4, 2026, the company says references to “AMD” mean Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. and its consolidated subsidiaries. AMD FY2025 Form 10-K
What does AMD make?
AMD makes more than the processors commonly found in desktop and notebook computers. Its portfolio includes central processing units (CPUs), graphics processing units (GPUs), accelerated processing units (APUs), AI accelerators, data-processing units, networking products, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), adaptive system-on-chips (SoCs), and software. AMD describes its work as high-performance and AI computing; that is the company’s positioning, not an independent comparison of its products. AMD FY2025 Form 10-K

Ryzen is AMD’s family of desktop and notebook processors. Radeon includes PC graphics products, including discrete Radeon RX graphics cards. A processor and a separate graphics card are different components: the AMD name by itself does not mean a particular computer includes a discrete GPU, or establish which components are compatible. Check the exact model and system specifications.
#1 Best Overall
- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
Data-center and server computing
For data centers, AMD lists EPYC server CPUs, Instinct GPUs and AI accelerators, as well as networking and programmable products. It also offers software such as ROCm for AI and high-performance computing. These products target server and infrastructure workloads, not ordinary consumer PC use. AMD FY2025 Form 10-K
Embedded and adaptive products
AMD’s embedded portfolio includes processors, FPGAs, system-on-modules, and adaptive SoCs. These components are used in purpose-built systems across areas such as automotive, industrial, healthcare, communications, and storage. Their role depends on the design of the finished system; they are not necessarily components a consumer would buy for a standard PC.

How does AMD organize its businesses?
AMD reports its business in three segments: Data Center, Client and Gaming, and Embedded. The company combined Client and Gaming into one reportable segment beginning in fiscal 2025. A quarterly filing dated August 5, 2026, also reflects the three-segment structure. Segment names describe how AMD reports its business; they are not product specifications or compatibility labels. Is AMD a computer company?
AMD is a semiconductor and computing technology company, not primarily a maker of complete consumer computers. It designs and sells components, platforms, and software that go into PCs, servers, game consoles, and specialized embedded systems. A computer, server, or console that uses AMD technology is a finished product built around particular components; it is not interchangeable with every other product carrying the AMD name.
Rank #3
- Can deliver fast 100 plus FPS performance in the world's most popular games, discrete graphics card required
- 6 Cores and 12 processing threads, bundled with the AMD Wraith Stealth cooler
- 4.2 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 19 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
- For the advanced Socket AM4 platform
What should you check when you see “AMD” on a product?
The name identifies the supplier, not the exact capabilities or suitability of a component. To understand what a particular product does, check:
- Product class: CPU, discrete GPU, server accelerator, FPGA, or another device.
- Intended system and workload: desktop or notebook PC, server, game console, or embedded application.
- Exact model and compatibility: confirm support for the relevant computer, motherboard, software, or purpose-built system.
- Practical requirements: for a PC component, consider performance needs along with power, cooling, and physical fit.
AMD’s product names and portfolio can change. Its FY2025 annual report describes products and segments for that fiscal year, while the August 2026 quarterly filing provides a later segment cross-check; neither a company name nor a family name alone identifies current availability or a particular model’s specifications.
