AMD Software Error 1603 is a general installation failure, not a diagnosis of one specific fault. AMD lists possible causes including driver conflicts, security software interference, missing Windows updates, damaged Visual C++ Redistributable files, and corrupted Windows system files or registry keys. Work through the checks below in order; the message “AMD Display Driver – Error 2147942659” does not, by itself, establish which cause applies.
What Error 1603 and code 2147942659 mean
AMD describes Error 1603 as a general error that can result from one or more different problems. The decimal code 2147942659 is not explained in the AMD support material cited here, so it should not be treated as a confirmed diagnosis or as proof of a particular underlying issue.
AMD’s listed possibilities include conflicts with graphics drivers or software, antivirus or anti-malware interference, missing critical or important Windows updates, corrupted Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable files, and damaged registry keys or Windows system files. The error alone does not identify which, if any, is responsible on your PC. AMD’s Error 1603 guidance covers these possibilities.

1. Install available Windows updates
Check Windows Update and install available critical and important updates, then restart the PC if Windows requests it. AMD recommends applying these updates before retrying the AMD Software Package installation.

2. Download the full package for your graphics product
Get the full Radeon Software package from AMD’s Driver and Support page. Select the package that matches both your graphics product and your Windows version. AMD’s Windows installation guidance explains the installation process. Do not assume a package for a different product or Windows version is interchangeable.
3. Check security software and Windows services
Security software can block installer files, according to AMD. Check whether your antivirus or anti-malware software reported or quarantined an AMD installer file. Avoid leaving protection disabled; if you need to test whether it is interfering, follow the security vendor’s safe, temporary troubleshooting guidance and restore protection afterward.

Also check that required Windows services are available and running. AMD specifically mentions Plug and Play. If the installation still fails, a selective startup can help determine whether a non-Microsoft service or startup item is conflicting. Because selective startup changes how Windows starts, note the original settings and restore normal startup after the test.
4. Repair Windows components when the evidence points to corruption
If Windows reports damaged system files, or the installation problem persists after the earlier checks, AMD recommends replacing corrupted Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable files and using Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) and System File Checker (SFC) to inspect and repair Windows components. These steps affect Windows itself, so use Microsoft’s current instructions for your Windows version rather than relying on commands or sequences intended for a different release.

5. Remove conflicting AMD components if necessary
If remnants of an earlier AMD installation appear to be involved, AMD suggests using the AMD Cleanup Utility or Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter to remove conflicting components. Review each utility’s instructions before proceeding, since cleanup can remove installed AMD software and leave you needing to reinstall the compatible package.

Contact AMD Customer Care if the installation still fails after the relevant checks. AMD asks users to attach the installer log at C:Program FilesAMDCIMLogInstall.log, put “Error 1603” in the service request subject, and include relevant details about the system and the steps already tried. The log can give support a more useful starting point than the error message alone.
