AMD’s official Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 specifications list the processor’s technical details. The April 22, 2026 launch announcement describes it as the first desktop processor with AMD 3D V-Cache on both chiplets.

How many cores and how fast is the 9950X3D2?

It has 16 CPU cores and 32 threads. Its base clock is 4.3 GHz, and its maximum boost clock is up to 5.6 GHz. AMD defines maximum boost as the highest frequency achievable on a single core during a bursty workload; actual clock speed and how long it is sustained depend on cooling, workload, and system conditions. The 5.6 GHz figure is therefore a ceiling, not a promise that every core will run at that speed continuously.

How much cache does it have?

AMD gives two useful cache totals: the specification table breaks out 192 MB of L3 and 16 MB of L2, while the launch announcement calls the combined total 208 MB. These figures describe different levels of cache rather than conflicting claims. The table also lists 1280 KB of L1 cache. AMD says its second-generation 3D V-Cache is present across all 16 cores.

What motherboard and memory does it need?

AM5 motherboard

The processor uses the AM5 socket. AMD lists A620, X670E, X670, B650E, B650, X870E, X870, B840, and B850 chipsets. A chipset match alone does not confirm that a specific board will run the processor: check the motherboard maker’s CPU-support list and required BIOS version before buying or upgrading.

DDR5 memory and rated speeds

The 9950X3D2 uses two-channel DDR5 UDIMM memory and supports up to 256 GB. AMD’s listed maximum official memory speeds vary with the number and rank of DIMMs:

What power, cooling and connectivity should you plan for?

Power and cooling

AMD lists a 200 W default TDP and a 95°C maximum operating temperature (Tjmax). The boxed processor does not include a thermal solution, and AMD recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance. Choose a cooler rated for the processor and compatible with your case and AM5 mounting hardware; cooling capacity and case airflow also affect sustained boost behavior.

Expansion, USB and storage

The processor supports PCIe 5.0 and provides 28 total native PCIe lanes, of which 24 are usable. AMD also lists four native USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports (10 Gbps) and one native USB 2.0 port. NVMe boot and RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10 are supported. The number and type of ports exposed on a finished PC depend on the motherboard and system design.

Integrated graphics

AMD lists Radeon Graphics with two graphics cores at 2200 MHz, along with USB Type-C DisplayPort Alternate Mode support. This is integrated graphics capability, not a substitute for checking whether a specific system’s display outputs meet your requirements.

Does the 9950X3D2 include a cooler?

No. AMD lists no thermal solution for the boxed processor (PIB) and recommends a liquid cooler for optimal performance. Cooling hardware must be purchased separately, and its socket mounting compatibility should be confirmed for the chosen cooler and motherboard.

Availability and launch price

AMD lists a launch date of April 22, 2026, and announced retail availability at a suggested end-user price (SEP) of $899 on that date. That is a dated launch-price reference, not a live street price. AMD’s product page describes availability as global; retailer stock and current prices vary.

What AMD’s performance claims do—and do not—show

AMD reported average performance uplifts of 5% to 8% versus the Ryzen 9 9950X3D in selected creator workloads and large source-code builds. AMD says the testing was conducted in February 2026 and describes configurations that included a 16-core system, 32 GB DDR5-6000, Windows 11 Pro, an X870E motherboard, and a GeForce RTX 5090; the workload notes name AMD and BOXX performance labs. These are manufacturer-published results for the specified tests, not independent review findings or a prediction for every application, game, or system.

AMD positions the processor for complex compile times, large-scale simulations, and memory-intensive workflows. Those are intended workload areas, not a guarantee of a particular result. To judge a real build, look for independent tests of the applications you use and compare results at the same settings and platform conditions.

What to verify before buying

  • Confirm that the exact AM5 motherboard model supports the processor and has the required BIOS.
  • Choose DDR5 UDIMMs and check the expected speed against the number and rank of modules.
  • Budget for a compatible cooler because one is not included; AMD recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance.
  • Check the motherboard’s actual USB, storage, expansion, and display connections rather than assuming every processor-level capability appears on the board.
  • Compare current retailer pricing with AMD’s $899 launch SEP, which is not a current-price quote.
