An AMD graphics device that seems disabled after an update may have a genuinely disabled Windows device, a driver version that Windows changed, or an AMD Software installation error. Those are different problems with different fixes. First check the adapter’s Device status in Device Manager and record any AMD installer error; don’t assume the GPU itself is disabled just because AMD Software stopped working.
First identify what Windows or AMD Software is reporting
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, double-click the AMD graphics adapter, and open its General tab.
- Read Device status. Record the full message and any code. Also note any error number shown by the AMD Software installer.
The distinction matters: Microsoft defines Code 22 as “This device is disabled. (Code 22).” By contrast, AMD Error 205 concerns Windows reverting the graphics driver version after an AMD Software installation; it does not, by itself, mean Windows disabled the GPU. AMD Error 202 indicates that a Windows Update is in progress and is blocking installation, while Error 207 indicates a potential graphics-device issue detected by Windows after software installation. See Microsoft’s Code 22 documentation and AMD’s support pages for Error 205, Error 202, and Error 207.
If Device Manager shows Code 22, enable the device
Code 22 means the device has been disabled, commonly by a user in Device Manager. In Device Manager, right-click the AMD adapter and choose Enable device. If that command is not on the context menu, select the adapter and use Action > Enable Device. Restart if Windows asks, then reopen the adapter’s Properties and confirm its status. Microsoft identifies enabling the device as the resolution for Code 22.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf Windows Update is running, let it finish
For AMD Error 202, AMD says its installer cannot proceed while a Windows update is in progress. Let Windows Update complete, restart the PC if requested (or if the update is waiting for a restart), then run the AMD Software installer again. Avoid trying to repair the AMD package in the middle of an active update.

If the problem started after a driver update, consider rolling back
A driver change can cause display problems without disabling the device. If the AMD adapter remains enabled but the issue began immediately after a driver update, open Device Manager > Display adapters > AMD adapter > Properties > Driver, then select Roll Back Driver if the button is available. Restart and check whether the problem is resolved. Microsoft notes that rollback requires administrator permission and may be unavailable when Windows has no previous driver to restore.
Microsoft’s guidance on updating drivers through Device Manager explains the available driver controls. If rollback is unavailable, get a compatible driver for the exact GPU and Windows version from AMD or check the computer maker’s support page for the specific PC model. For a laptop or prebuilt system, the manufacturer may provide a model-specific package; the available sources do not establish one package choice that is right for every system.

If AMD Error 205 says Windows reverted the driver
AMD describes Error 205 as a case where Windows may have reverted the driver version after the AMD Software package installed successfully. That points to a driver-version mismatch, not proof that the graphics device is disabled. Check Device Manager’s status separately, then follow AMD’s Error 205 instructions if the installer shows that code.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →AMD’s troubleshooting procedure temporarily changes Windows’ device-installation setting before reinstalling AMD Software: open System Properties > Hardware > Device Installation Settings, choose No, save the change, and restart. This is a temporary troubleshooting measure for the documented Error 205 scenario, not a general recommendation to leave Windows device-installation settings disabled. Revisit the setting after reinstalling.

Choose a compatible package before reinstalling
Confirm the graphics product and Windows version before downloading a package. AMD’s Auto-Detect tool checks compatible Radeon graphics, Ryzen chipsets, and the Windows version. AMD’s Adrenalin installation guidance, last updated February 9, 2026, lists Windows 11 version 21H2 and later and Windows 10 64-bit version 1809 and later for the package described there; AMD cautions that requirements can change as products and features change. These stated requirements should not be treated as proof that every package supports every AMD product.
Use AMD’s driver download and Auto-Detect page or consult the computer manufacturer’s support page using the PC’s exact model. AMD’s Adrenalin installation instructions describe the package and installation options.

Use cleanup or Factory Reset only when a normal install is not enough
If a compatible reinstall still fails because of a suspected conflict or corrupted installation, AMD offers two more disruptive clean-install paths. They are not the first step for every device that appears disabled.
AMD Cleanup Utility
AMD Cleanup Utility removes AMD graphics and audio drivers and software; it does not modify AMD chipset drivers. AMD recommends running it in Safe Mode for best results. The utility creates a System Restore point before cleanup, and Windows must be restarted afterward. AMD says cleanup can take 15–20 minutes depending on how much software must be removed. Then install the compatible graphics package. Details are in AMD’s Cleanup Utility guidance.

Installer Factory Reset
AMD’s installer may offer Factory Reset, which removes earlier AMD Software packages and temporarily pauses Windows Updates during setup. AMD warns that selecting it removes the ability to roll back to the previously installed drivers. Use it only when that trade-off is acceptable, rather than as an automatic response to a post-update symptom.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If Error 207 remains after installation
AMD describes Error 207 as a successful software installation with a potential graphics-device issue detected by Windows. Check and record the adapter’s Device status and the complete installer message, then use AMD support or the computer manufacturer’s support channel for the exact system. Error 207 alone does not establish that the GPU must be replaced.
Check whether the disabled item is actually a feature
Sometimes a driver-related setting, rather than the graphics adapter, is disabled. AMD’s September 3, 2026 release notes for Adrenalin 26.9.1 list Smart Access Memory becoming disabled after driver installation on Windows 10 as a known issue. This applies to that specific feature and release note; it is not evidence that all AMD GPUs are disabled after updates. If Device Manager reports the adapter is working, check the relevant feature setting separately from the device status.
Quick Recap
Which recovery path should you use?
| What you see | Best first action | What it addresses |
|---|---|---|
| Device Manager Code 22 | Enable the AMD adapter in Device Manager | A device Windows reports as disabled |
| Windows Update is still running; AMD shows Error 202 | Finish the update, restart, and retry the AMD installer | An installation blocked by an active Windows update |
| Problem began after a driver update; rollback is available | Use Roll Back Driver and restart | A problem introduced by the new driver, when a prior version is available |
| AMD shows Error 205 | Follow AMD’s temporary device-installation-setting procedure, then reinstall | Windows reverting the graphics driver version after installation |
| A compatible reinstall still has a conflict or corruption | Consider Cleanup Utility or Factory Reset | Persistent installation problems, with the cleanup and rollback trade-offs described above |
| AMD shows Error 207 | Check Device status and seek support with the exact error details | A potential graphics-device issue detected by Windows |
