As of October 13, 2026, AMD FSR 4 and Nvidia DLSS are not interchangeable handheld settings. AMD’s public compatibility page documents FSR 4 machine-learning upscaling for Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics cards, with RX 6000 support planned for 2027; it does not list handheld APUs. A Windows Central report published October 8, 2026 quotes AMD executive Jack Huynh saying the company intends to extend FSR 4 to APUs, laptops and handhelds by the end of 2026, but that is a reported plan rather than confirmation for a specific device.

DLSS belongs to Nvidia’s GeForce RTX ecosystem. The commonly cited ROG Ally configuration uses an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme APU with Radeon RDNA 3 graphics, and the available product information does not show a native in-game DLSS option on that hardware. No controlled handheld test in the available evidence establishes a winner for image quality, frame rate, latency or battery life.

What the comparison means for a handheld owner

On a handheld gaming PC, the first question is not which upscaler looks better. It is whether the game, operating system, driver and graphics hardware expose either feature at all. FSR 4 and DLSS can both be presented as ways to render internally below the display’s output resolution and reconstruct a higher-resolution image, but their support is tied to different hardware and software ecosystems.

Technology What is established What is not established for handhelds
AMD FSR 4 AMD’s current public page documents machine-learning upscaling on Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics cards. RX 6000 support is listed as planned for 2027. The page does not list handheld APUs as currently supported. Device-level enablement, driver requirements and operating-system coverage remain unspecified.
Nvidia DLSS DLSS is part of Nvidia’s GeForce RTX feature ecosystem and appears only where the game and compatible RTX hardware expose it. The cited AMD-based handheld example is not shown to have native DLSS support. No evidence here demonstrates DLSS parity on handheld PCs.

That distinction prevents a common mistake: treating a technology name in a game’s PC settings as proof that every handheld can select it. A native option, a driver-level feature and an unofficial modification are different things. The material available for this comparison verifies neither unofficial injection methods nor their current stability, anti-cheat consequences or support status.

FSR 4 handheld availability: the current record

What AMD officially lists

AMD’s “AMD FSR Technologies” page is the strongest current reference for compatibility. Its machine-learning upscaling wording covers Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 series graphics cards and says RX 6000 support is planned for 2027. The page describes GPU series, not the integrated graphics in handheld APUs.

Therefore, the precise statement is that AMD’s public page does not currently document official FSR 4 ML-upscaling support for handheld APUs. That is different from claiming FSR 4 can never run on a handheld: experimental work, later drivers or a future product announcement could change the situation.

The reported end-of-2026 plan

Windows Central reported on October 8, 2026 that Jack Huynh, AMD’s senior vice president and general manager of Computing and Graphics, described an intention to extend FSR 4 across AMD’s product range by the end of 2026. The report translated his statement as:

“We will expand the machine learning and AI-based FSR 4 technology, which was preemptively introduced in existing external graphics cards, to the entire product lineup by the end of this year, including APUs, gaming laptops, and handheld devices.”

This is a forward-looking statement reported by a secondary publication. It does not identify a driver version, supported APU list, operating-system requirement, game list or release date for a particular handheld. Until AMD publishes those details, treat handheld FSR 4 as an announced direction rather than an available setting.

Why an APU’s graphics architecture is not confirmation

A handheld can use AMD graphics and still lack a documented FSR 4 implementation. Support may depend on the APU generation, memory arrangement, driver branch, game integration and the software path AMD chooses for machine-learning inference. Architecture branding alone cannot establish that all features of a discrete Radeon card are present on an integrated handheld GPU.

Does FSR 4 work on the ROG Ally?

The cited ASUS configuration of the 2023 ROG Ally uses an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, Radeon RDNA 3 graphics, 16 GB of RAM and a 1,920 × 1,080 120 Hz display in ASUS’s stated test setup. Those specifications establish the hardware context; they do not confirm FSR 4 compatibility.

As of the October 13, 2026 compatibility record, AMD’s public FSR page does not list the ROG Ally or its Ryzen Z1 Extreme APU as an officially supported FSR 4 ML-upscaling device. The October 8 report about expanding FSR 4 to handhelds also does not name the ROG Ally, a driver package or a rollout channel. A game menu appearing on one unit after an update would need to be checked against AMD and ASUS release notes before being treated as official support.

Will FSR 4 come to Steam Deck and other handhelds?

The available evidence does not settle Steam Deck support. AMD’s partner category lists Valve, ASUS, Lenovo, Acer, MSI and other handheld partners, but a partner listing is not a feature-support matrix. Neither the official compatibility wording nor the reported roadmap specifies Steam Deck models, SteamOS versions, Windows installations, or a driver release.

The same caution applies to Legion Go, other Windows handhelds and future AMD-based designs. A reliable device answer needs all of the following:

Why DLSS is a different proposition on handheld PCs

DLSS follows the GeForce RTX ecosystem

Nvidia’s DLSS announcements concern GeForce RTX hardware and games or applications that implement supported DLSS features. The feature is not a universal Windows switch that an AMD Radeon handheld can select. The cited ROG Ally configuration has AMD graphics, so the available product information does not show it presenting native DLSS in games.

Native support versus unofficial techniques

For a comparison to be meaningful, classify the implementation before measuring it:

  • Native game support: the game’s own graphics menu exposes the feature for the detected hardware.
  • Official driver or operating-system support: the platform vendor documents the feature and its requirements outside an individual game.
  • Unofficial injection or modification: a third-party method changes the rendering path without a verified vendor support statement.

The current evidence does not verify unofficial DLSS-on-AMD or FSR 4 injection procedures. Their stability, anti-cheat implications and compatibility can vary by game, so they should not be presented as equivalent alternatives to native support.

What upscaling changes—and what it does not

Upscaling reduces the number of pixels rendered internally and reconstructs an image at the handheld’s output resolution. That can relieve GPU work, but the result depends on the game’s implementation, motion data, sharpening, temporal history and the chosen quality mode. FSR 4 is described by AMD as machine-learning based; DLSS is Nvidia’s corresponding RTX ecosystem technology.

Upscaling is also separate from frame generation. A higher displayed frame count produced by generated frames is not the same as rendering more responsive frames from the game simulation. Any handheld comparison must record base rendering performance, generated frames and input latency as separate measurements.

How to run a fair FSR 4-versus-DLSS handheld test

No controlled handheld benchmark in the available material establishes a winner. If you are testing a title yourself, keep the variables fixed and publish the conditions with every result.

  1. Choose a game that officially supports both technologies. Record the exact game build and the feature versions shown in its settings.
  2. Identify the device completely. Note the handheld model, APU, memory configuration, operating system and graphics-driver version. Do not combine results from different power limits or firmware revisions.
  3. Fix the display target. Record the panel resolution, refresh rate, internal render resolution and output resolution. A 1,920 × 1,080 panel should not be compared with a 1,280 × 800 panel without stating the difference.
  4. Match the quality mode. Use equivalent performance, balanced or quality presets where the game provides them, and record any sharpening or dynamic-resolution setting.
  5. Hold the power profile constant. A handheld running on battery, a 15-watt profile and a plugged-in 30-watt profile can produce different results even with identical game settings.
  6. Separate frame generation. Test upscaling with frame generation disabled first. If frame generation is available, report it in a separate pass rather than folding generated frames into the base frame rate.
  7. Use the same scene and run length. A repeatable route or benchmark sequence is more useful than a single screenshot or a brief menu observation.
  8. Measure more than average FPS. Capture frame-time consistency, input latency, image artifacts and power draw or battery runtime under the same workload.
  9. Inspect motion, not only still images. Check fine detail, temporal stability, ghosting, shimmering and motion clarity while panning or moving through the scene.

Which measurements matter on a battery-powered device?

Image quality

Look for detail retention on foliage, thin geometry, text and distant objects. Temporal instability can appear as crawling or shimmering during camera movement, while ghosting leaves trails behind moving characters or particles. A still screenshot can miss both problems, so record moving footage at the same output resolution when possible.

Base frame rate and frame pacing

Report the rendered game’s frame rate separately from any generated frames. Average FPS can hide uneven frame delivery; frame-time graphs and a consistent test route reveal whether motion feels smooth or stalls during shader compilation, traversal or heavy effects.

Latency

Generated frames can increase the number shown on screen without producing the same improvement in input responsiveness as a genuinely higher base frame rate. A useful report identifies the input-to-display measurement method, whether generation was enabled and which power profile was active.

Power and battery

Upscaling may reduce GPU workload, but the practical result depends on the game, frame-rate target, display brightness, refresh rate, CPU load and handheld power limit. Record wall-power draw or battery percentage over a defined interval, plus charger state, rather than claiming a universal battery advantage.

Game and feature coverage

Support varies by title and feature generation. A technology-level reputation cannot substitute for checking the particular game version and its graphics menu. Keep a dated compatibility list because game patches, drivers and vendor support can change.

A practical decision guide for buyers

If you already own an AMD handheld

  • Check the game’s own graphics menu and the handheld maker’s current driver notes.
  • Do not assume that Radeon branding or RDNA 3 graphics means FSR 4 is enabled.
  • Treat any FSR 4 announcement as provisional until AMD names your APU and software path.
  • Use an officially supported upscaler already exposed by the game rather than relying on an unverified modification.

If DLSS is a priority

Start with the hardware requirement: native DLSS support follows compatible GeForce RTX graphics, not simply Windows or a high-refresh display. Verify the exact handheld GPU and the game’s supported feature set before buying. An AMD-based handheld should not be marketed or purchased on the assumption that it can select DLSS.

If you are choosing between current handheld ecosystems

Compare confirmed device support, driver update practices, game compatibility and power behavior—not only the names FSR and DLSS. A feature that is documented for a desktop graphics card may not be available on an integrated handheld APU. Ask for the exact model, driver and game evidence before treating a roadmap promise as a present capability.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Calling a roadmap a launch: the reported end-of-2026 expansion plan is not a confirmation that a handheld has received FSR 4.
  • Inferring support from architecture: Radeon RDNA 3 branding does not itself document FSR 4 availability.
  • Comparing unlike resolutions: output and internal resolutions must be recorded for both runs.
  • Counting generated frames as rendered frames: publish base FPS and generated output separately.
  • Using desktop results as handheld proof: desktop GPUs, power limits and cooling differ substantially from handheld conditions.
  • Ignoring software dates: support can change with a driver, game patch or operating-system update, so include the test date.
  • Equating a menu label with quality: the game’s implementation and selected mode determine the actual result.

Bottom line on FSR 4 versus DLSS for handhelds

There is no evidence here for a measured handheld winner. AMD’s official page currently documents FSR 4 ML upscaling for RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics cards and planned RX 6000 support in 2027, but it does not document handheld APU support. AMD executive Jack Huynh was reported on October 8, 2026 as intending to bring FSR 4 to APUs, laptops and handhelds by the end of 2026; that remains a plan until AMD publishes device and driver details. DLSS remains tied to Nvidia’s GeForce RTX ecosystem, and the AMD-based ROG Ally example is not shown to expose it natively.

For a handheld purchase or settings decision, verify the exact model, operating system, driver, game build and feature menu. Until a controlled, same-device comparison is available, claims about superior image quality, FPS, latency or battery life are not established.
