Amazon’s new Alexa Tablet family gives buyers a more direct alternative to consider: three Android-based models with Google Play access and Alexa+ built in. But the October 8, 2026 announcement does not show that Apple’s iPads are struggling or that Amazon will take sales from them. The tablets had not yet reached their announced U.S. shipping date when Amazon announced them, so claims about their performance and everyday experience remain untested.
What Amazon announced
Amazon introduced three tablets on October 8, 2026: the 12-inch Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, the 11-inch Alexa Tablet 11, and the 8-inch Alexa Tablet 8. The company says Alexa+ is integrated across the family. Amazon also says the tablets include Google Play Store access alongside services such as Prime Video, Kindle, Audible, and Amazon Music. Amazon’s announcement describes the products and their launch pricing.
The announced U.S. starting prices are for the tablets and accessories as listed below. They are not like-for-like comparisons with iPads: screen size, storage, configuration, and included accessories can change the total cost.

Amazon identified the Nanomatte option only for the 12 Pro and said it partnered with Corning on the anti-glare display. That is a vendor description, not an independent assessment of glare reduction or image quality.

How the tablets differ from older Fire tablets
The key announced shift is Google Play access. Amazon’s developer FAQ says apps generally need to be submitted to Google Play to distribute on Alexa Tablets, with Amazon Kids+ apps as an exception. Amazon’s developer FAQ sets out that distribution policy. TechCrunch describes the new tablets as Android devices with Google Play access, a departure from the Fire OS and Amazon Appstore approach associated with prior Amazon tablets. TechCrunch’s October 8 report provides that contemporaneous framing.
That wider app storefront could make the Alexa Tablets more relevant to people who previously ruled out a Fire tablet because an app they use was unavailable through Amazon’s store. It does not establish that every Android app will work well, be available, or behave identically on these devices; app compatibility and usability need to be checked on the released hardware.

What the iPad comparison can—and cannot—show
The announced prices and screen sizes make a model-by-model comparison a reasonable buyer question, but they do not establish equivalent performance or value. A fair comparison needs matching tablet-only configurations, or comparable bundles when keyboard or pen input matters. It should also account for screen quality, app availability, software-update support, battery life under the same workload, and everyday responsiveness.

Likewise, the available launch evidence does not quantify iPad sales declines or demonstrate that Amazon is likely to win market share. The claim that Apple’s iPads are “struggling” is not established by these launch sources. Calling the Alexa Tablets a potential challenger is fair; saying they have already exposed a weakness in iPad demand or will overwhelm Apple’s line is not.

Amazon said the tablets would ship October 14, 2026 in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, followed by the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain beginning October 19. Those dates and markets were given in the October 8 announcement; they are not confirmation of current stock or delivery availability. Check the local listing for the live price, configuration, bundle, and shipping date.
