For Amazon sellers, “virtual assistant” can mean either a remote human worker or an AI feature such as Amazon Seller Assistant. They are different ways to delegate: people can handle ongoing work and apply judgment, while Amazon says its AI assistant can analyze seller information, recommend next steps and—when permitted—carry out some routine actions. The right choice depends on the task, access required and level of oversight.

What does “virtual assistant” mean for an Amazon seller?

Human virtual assistants

A human virtual assistant is a person who performs work remotely. Depending on their experience and the agreement, that work might include routine operations, listing updates, customer-related tasks or specialist support. A seller remains responsible for defining the role, setting access and checking work.

Amazon Seller Assistant

Amazon Seller Assistant is an AI feature in the seller experience, not a human service provider. Amazon describes it as a business assistant that can provide tailored insights and recommendations across areas such as inventory, advertising, compliance and account health. Amazon says it can also take actions with a seller’s permission.

Amazon separately offers ways to find software and service providers. The Selling Partner Appstore lists third-party software, while the Service Provider Network helps sellers find providers in areas including advertising, translation, compliance, taxes and shipping. These options are not interchangeable: software supports defined workflows, and a provider offers a service under separate terms.

What Amazon says Seller Assistant can do

Amazon’s product descriptions point to a shift from answering questions toward helping monitor and execute routine work. The examples below describe Amazon’s stated capabilities, not an independent assessment of results.

Answer questions using seller context

Amazon has described Seller Assistant as able to provide tailored insights and recommendations, including help with questions about account health. Its stated areas of support include inventory optimization, advertising strategy and compliance.

Monitor routine workflows and take permitted actions

In a product announcement, Amazon said Seller Assistant gained persistent business context and workflows for monitoring and executing routine tasks, including inventory restocking and pricing adjustments. Amazon says sellers can define guardrails and review audit trails. Those controls matter because a recommendation is different from a change made to an account or offer.

Amazon also announced a Selling Partner plugin for Amazon Quick and a beta with Anthropic’s Claude. Availability can change; check Amazon’s current announcements and product access before relying on either integration.

Amazon Vice President of Worldwide Selling Partner Experience Mary Beth Westmoreland described the intended direction this way: “It can deeply reason, setting goals and sub-goals, planning out strategies over time, remembering stuff, and then acting on your behalf. Essentially, it’s able to move beyond just responding and toward actually pursuing goals, while you remain in control of final decision making.” This is Amazon’s description of the product’s intended behavior, not a guarantee that it will perform every workflow correctly.

How to choose between a person, AI and software

Start with the work that needs doing rather than the label “virtual assistant.” A seller may use more than one option, assigning each a clear scope and keeping appropriate review in place.

Option Best fit Context and coverage Authority and oversight
Human virtual assistant Recurring operational work or tasks that require communication, judgment or follow-through. Depends on the person’s experience, instructions, working hours, language and access to relevant information. Set account permissions, approval rules, quality checks and an escalation route directly with the provider.
Amazon Seller Assistant Seller questions, tailored recommendations and Amazon-described routine workflows such as restocking or pricing adjustments. Amazon says it can use seller business context; exact access and availability depend on the feature and account. Amazon describes permission-based actions, guardrails and audit trails for newer workflows. Review proposed changes and records.
Third-party seller software A defined function or workflow supported by a tool listed in the Selling Partner Appstore. Varies by product; verify supported marketplaces, data access, language, availability and integrations with its provider. Check permissions, change controls, logs, support and terms before connecting software.
Specialist service provider Expert services such as advertising, translation, compliance, tax or shipping support. Varies by provider, service scope and agreement. Confirm deliverables, access, responsibility for decisions, review process and escalation terms before engagement.

Do not assume one option is cheaper, more accurate or more available than another. Ask prospective human providers and software vendors for current rates and terms; Amazon’s usage figures do not establish what an individual seller will spend or save.

Set boundaries before delegating seller work

Inventory, advertising, listings, compliance and account health can affect one another. A pricing or restocking change, for example, may have consequences beyond the immediate task. Before granting access or enabling an automated workflow, write down what the delegate may see, recommend and change.

  • Define the task: Specify the desired outcome, relevant marketplace and products, and what is out of scope.
  • Limit access: Give a person or application only the account permissions it needs, and review those permissions when the work changes or ends.
  • Set approval rules: Identify changes that may happen automatically and those that require your review first. Use guardrails where Amazon provides them.
  • Keep an audit trail: Know how to inspect actions and recommendations, and how to reverse or escalate a change when needed.
  • Choose a review cadence: Decide who checks the work and how quickly issues must be raised, especially for account, compliance and pricing decisions.

What Amazon’s adoption figures do—and do not—show

Amazon’s 2025 Small Business Empowerment Report said Seller Assistant had more than 230,000 monthly users and that sellers accepted its recommendations nearly 90% of the time. These are company-reported adoption and recommendation-acceptance figures. They do not independently measure productivity, profit, accuracy or whether AI improves results for every seller.

The same report said independent sellers accounted for more than 60% of sales in Amazon’s store and that more than 75,000 independent sellers exceeded $1 million in sales in 2025. Those marketplace-wide figures are not typical-outcome estimates for an individual business and do not show what caused any seller’s results.

Where human judgment still matters

Amazon’s descriptions indicate that Seller Assistant is intended to handle more than simple question answering, but they do not establish that AI can replace human judgment across seller operations. Sellers still need to decide business priorities, assess whether a recommendation fits their circumstances, oversee consequential changes and handle work that calls for specialist expertise or direct accountability.

For many businesses, the practical choice is not “AI or people.” It is to delegate defined, repeatable work to suitable tools or providers while retaining human review for decisions with meaningful financial, operational or compliance consequences. How much support a seller needs will depend on the business and the work—not on adoption figures alone.
