Amazon’s Prime Try Before You Buy fashion benefit is no longer available. January 31, 2025 was the last reported day that eligible customers could place orders through the program. It was a limited Prime benefit for selected clothing, shoes and accessories—not a general Amazon policy that let shoppers receive any product before paying.
When it operated, customers could order as many as six eligible items, try them at home for seven days after delivery, keep what fit and return the rest without being charged for returned items. Shoppers can still buy fashion on Amazon and may receive free returns, but eligibility, deadlines and fees now depend on the marketplace, seller and individual listing.
What Prime Try Before You Buy was
Prime Try Before You Buy was an at-home fitting benefit attached to selected fashion listings. It was designed to reduce the uncertainty of buying garments and footwear online: a Prime member could receive several eligible pieces, test their fit and feel at home, then pay only for the items kept.

The program did not cover every fashion product and did not create a site-wide “try anything before payment” rule. Eligibility was determined at the item level. A product had to display the benefit in the customer’s marketplace, and the customer had to meet the applicable Prime and ordering requirements.

What shoppers could order
- Up to six eligible apparel, shoe or accessory items in one Try Before You Buy order.
- Only products enrolled in the benefit; ordinary fashion listings were not automatically included.
- Items selected from the customer’s available Amazon marketplace, with availability varying by country and inventory.
How the seven-day trial worked
The seven-day period began after delivery. During that window, the customer could inspect and try the items at home, decide which ones to keep, and initiate returns for the rest. Returned eligible items were not charged under the former program’s rules. The allowance was a trial period, not an indefinite possession period, so customers needed to follow the order’s displayed deadline.
When Amazon ended the benefit
The Associated Press reported that January 31, 2025 was the final day eligible customers could place Try Before You Buy orders. That date is important because older help pages, videos and social posts may still describe the feature as if it were active. Instructions that once told shoppers to select the service in the Amazon app should now be treated as historical.
A 2022 Amazon UK guide directed customers to the app’s “Fashion & Beauty” area to find the service. That navigation path documents how the feature was presented at the time; it does not establish that the option remains in the app or on current product pages.
Why Amazon says it phased out Try Before You Buy
An Amazon spokesperson told the Associated Press that the service was being phased out because it had scaled to only a limited number of items and customers were increasingly using newer digital fitting tools. The spokesperson specifically cited virtual try-on, personalized size recommendations, review highlights and improved size charts.

That is Amazon’s stated rationale, not independent proof that any single tool caused the shutdown. It does explain the company’s direction: instead of shipping a special multi-item trial order, Amazon is emphasizing information and software intended to help shoppers choose a size before checkout, alongside ordinary return policies.
Former service versus buying fashion now
The following distinction prevents the most common misunderstanding. The former benefit changed when payment and returns were handled for a selected group of products; current shopping generally uses the ordinary order-and-return process.

What free returns mean after the phase-out
When announcing the phase-out, Amazon said customers would still be able to get free returns across its apparel department. That announcement should not be read as a promise that every fashion order is free to return in every country.

Check these details before paying
- Open the exact product page. Do not rely on a category-level assumption that all clothing or footwear is returnable.
- Read the “Returns” or “Free returns” line. Confirm whether the specific size, color and seller offer the policy you expect.
- Identify the seller and fulfillment method. An item sold or shipped by Amazon can have different handling from a third-party seller’s offer; seller-fulfilled returns may be sent directly to that seller.
- Record the deadline shown in your order. Return windows can be marketplace- and item-specific, so the date in your account is more useful than a generic article or old video.
- Check refund conditions. Review any requirements about tags, hygiene seals, packaging or damage before removing them.
A practical replacement workflow for trying fashion at home
You can approximate the convenience of the old service by treating each purchase as a controlled return decision rather than assuming a trial benefit exists.
1. Filter for the fit information you actually need
Use the product page’s size chart, measurements, material details and customer review highlights. Compare garment measurements with a well-fitting item you already own instead of relying only on a generic small, medium or large label. For shoes, check the brand’s stated sizing guidance and whether reviews describe a narrow, wide or unusually long fit.
2. Verify return eligibility before adding alternatives
If you are considering two sizes or colors, verify that each separate listing is return-eligible. A return policy can differ between nearly identical offers because the seller, fulfillment method or marketplace differs.
3. Preserve the item’s returnable condition
Try clothing on indoors over clean undergarments and keep tags, packaging and hygiene liners intact until you decide. Avoid wearing footwear outdoors before confirming the fit. These habits reduce the risk that a return is rejected or partially refunded because the item is no longer in its original condition.

4. Use the order page, not memory, for the deadline
After delivery, open the order details and note the return-by date and available methods. If a listing says the seller handles returns, follow that seller-specific process rather than assuming the standard Amazon drop-off route applies.
5. Start the return promptly
If an item does not work, begin the return while the displayed window is open. Select the reason accurately, choose the available method and retain the drop-off receipt or carrier confirmation until the refund is posted.

Amazon’s 2019 announcement for Personal Shopper by Prime Wardrobe described a separate styling service that sent curated clothing for at-home try-on and charged customers only for items they kept. That announcement listed a historical price of $4.99 per month.

Country and seller differences matter
The reported shutdown timing concerns the US program as described by the Associated Press. Amazon operates separate marketplaces, and return rules can differ by country. A UK help page supporting free fashion returns cannot prove that the same categories, deadlines or seller obligations apply in the United States, Canada, Australia or any other marketplace.
Third-party sellers add another layer of variation. Even when a product appears in Amazon’s fashion department, the seller may set the return address and process, subject to the marketplace’s applicable rules. Before ordering, confirm the policy attached to the exact offer you intend to buy.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating an old app path as proof of availability
“Fashion & Beauty” was a historical location mentioned in a 2022 UK guide. If the current app does not show Try Before You Buy, there is no hidden seven-day trial to activate through that old menu.
Mistake: assuming every clothing item has free returns
Free-return language can depend on the marketplace, seller and listing. Read the product-page and checkout disclosures for each item.
Mistake: confusing a refund with the former payment arrangement
Under ordinary purchasing, you generally pay through checkout and receive a refund after an accepted return. That is different from the former benefit’s structure, which let customers keep selected items and avoid charges for returned eligible items during the trial process.
Mistake: relying on a six-item or seven-day allowance today
The six-item maximum and seven-day period belonged to the discontinued benefit. They are not a current entitlement for ordinary Amazon fashion orders.
Bottom line for shoppers
Amazon’s Try Before You Buy fashion service was a limited Prime program: up to six selected fashion items, seven days after delivery to try them, and no charge for eligible items sent back under its rules. It ended, with January 31, 2025 reported as the last day to place orders. Today, the practical replacement is ordinary fashion checkout followed by a listing-specific return, supported by Amazon’s size tools and other digital fit features. Confirm the seller, fulfillment method, return eligibility, cost and deadline on every item page before ordering.
