Amazon Simple Notification Service (Amazon SNS) is an AWS-managed publish-subscribe service: an application publishes a message to a topic, and SNS distributes it to the topic’s subscribers. Use it when multiple systems or people need to receive the same event without making the publisher send to each destination separately. Choose a standard topic for broad endpoint support; choose a FIFO topic when ordering and deduplication matter and your subscribers can use Amazon SQS.
How Amazon SNS works
A topic is a logical communication channel. A publisher sends a message to that topic, and SNS routes it to subscribed endpoints. This decouples the publisher from the systems that consume its messages: it does not need to know how each subscriber processes the event. AWS describes SNS as supporting both application-to-application messaging and application-to-person notifications. AWS’s Amazon SNS overview explains the service model.
For example, an order-processing application can publish one order event to a topic. SNS can fan that event out to separate SQS queues so inventory, shipping, and analytics services can process it independently. SNS can also deliver notifications to supported people-facing endpoints, including email addresses and phone numbers.

Send one event to multiple systems
Fanout is a good fit when several independent applications need the same event. A publisher sends once; SNS distributes the message to subscribers such as SQS queues, Lambda functions, HTTP(S) endpoints, or Firehose delivery streams. This reduces direct connections between the publisher and every downstream system.

Notify people about events
Applications and AWS monitoring workflows can use SNS to send alerts by email or SMS. SNS also supports mobile push notifications to application endpoints. SMS delivery is integrated with AWS End User Messaging SMS; message types, spending limits, opt-out lists, and delivery optimization are configurable. Standard or FIFO: choose based on delivery needs
The main decision is a trade-off among endpoint flexibility, ordering, duplicate suppression, and integration complexity. AWS describes standard topics as the flexible option when broad endpoint support matters and strict ordering or duplicate suppression is not essential. FIFO topics are for integrations that need ordered messages and deduplication through SQS.

These distinctions and endpoint constraints are documented in the SNS developer guide and AWS’s FIFO topic documentation. Decide on topic type before creating it: AWS says a topic’s type and name cannot be changed afterward. If either choice is wrong, plan to create a replacement topic and move publishers and subscribers rather than expecting an in-place conversion.
Subscriptions, confirmation, and filtering
A destination receives topic messages only after it subscribes. Some subscriptions require confirmation before delivery begins: AWS specifically identifies HTTP(S) endpoints, email addresses, and AWS resources in other accounts. The endpoint owner or resource must complete the confirmation step.

By default, each subscriber receives every message published to its topic. A subscription filter policy can narrow delivery using message attributes or JSON message-body properties, depending on the filter policy scope. AWS supports string and numeric matching operators, among others. This is useful when systems share a topic but need only particular event types or values.
Allow up to 15 minutes for additions or changes to a subscription filter policy to take full effect, according to AWS’s message filtering guide. During that propagation window, a routing test may not reflect the final policy behavior.

Reliability: what “exactly once” does and does not mean
Do not treat exactly-once delivery as an unconditional promise. AWS documents exactly-once delivery and processing for SNS FIFO with SQS FIFO only when requirements are met, including correct queue permissions, the consumer deleting messages before the visibility timeout expires, no subscription filter, and no network disruption. When filtering is enabled, FIFO supports at-most-once delivery because messages that do not match are intentionally excluded. Review AWS’s FIFO delivery conditions when designing a consumer.
Security and private connectivity
AWS documents KMS server-side encryption for FIFO topics and queues. In this mechanism, only the message body is encrypted; message attributes, resource metadata, and metrics are not. If those other fields contain sensitive information, account for their exposure separately in the design. AWS also documents interface VPC endpoints for private connectivity to SNS. How SNS pricing is determined
AWS says SNS has no upfront cost. Charges depend on messages published, notifications delivered, and management API calls; delivery rates vary by endpoint. Because the applicable rate depends on endpoint and geography, check the AWS pricing page for the region and delivery types you expect to use before estimating cost. This overview does not establish a current rate card.
Is SNS the right service?
Choose SNS when one event should be distributed to multiple independent subscribers, or when an application needs to send event-driven notifications through supported endpoints. For standard topics, endpoint flexibility is the priority. For FIFO topics, use the SNS-to-SQS pattern when strict ordering and deduplication are needed, and confirm that the added queue integration fits the system.
