Prepare for an Amazon SDE coding interview by reviewing computer science fundamentals, practicing data structures and algorithms, and writing code without relying on an IDE. Then use Amazon’s sample coding challenge to learn its assessment environment and prepare specific examples that show how you applied its Leadership Principles. The exact assessment depends on the role and may vary by country, so use your recruiter’s guidance and interview invitation to confirm your format.
Start with the format for your role
Amazon publishes different preparation guidance for university and recent-graduate candidates and for SDE II candidates. Those formats are not interchangeable, and neither should be assumed to apply to every SDE interview. Amazon’s pages are undated; check your current invitation and ask your recruiting contact what to expect.

These are role-specific examples from Amazon’s university and recent-graduate SDE guidance and SDE II preparation page, not universal timing guarantees.
What to study for the coding questions
Amazon’s software development interview topics guidance recommends reviewing computer science fundamentals and practicing coding outside an integrated development environment. It lists these areas:

For coding practice, focus on solving problems with familiar data structures and algorithms, then explaining why your approach fits the requirements. Practice writing syntactically correct code by hand or in a plain editor, rather than depending on IDE features to catch errors or complete code.
Practice the full solution process
- Clarify the problem. Ask about inputs, outputs, constraints, and ambiguous requirements before choosing an approach.
- Describe your approach. Explain the data structures and algorithm you plan to use, along with relevant runtime or design trade-offs.
- Write working code. Amazon’s SDE II page says to expect syntactically correct code, not pseudocode.
- Check edge cases. Test ordinary cases, boundary conditions, empty or minimal inputs where relevant, and invalid input if the problem allows for it.
- Review the result. Trace the code against an example and look for errors before saying you are done.
Amazon’s SDE II guidance says coding is evaluated for scalable, robust, well-tested code, including how it handles edge cases and invalid input. Use that as a useful standard for practice; it is specific to the SDE II guidance.

Use Amazon’s sample coding challenge
Amazon recommends trying its sample coding challenge to become familiar with the online assessment environment. This is practical preparation for the interface itself, not a substitute for studying algorithms or coding fundamentals. Amazon also advises candidates to ask their recruiting point of contact about likely interview topics.

When working through a design prompt, clarify what the system must do before proposing a design. Then explain how your choices address the requirements and where you see trade-offs among reliability, efficiency, and scale. Amazon also recommends asking questions to clarify and validate system designs.

- Situation: Give the context needed to understand the challenge.
- Task: State what you were responsible for.
- Action: Explain what you did and why, making your own contribution clear.
- Result: Describe the outcome and include relevant measures when you have them.

A practical preparation sequence
- Confirm your context. Determine whether university/recent-graduate or SDE II guidance matches your role, and check your invitation and recruiter communication for the actual format.
- Review fundamentals. Work through the official topic areas most relevant to your role, especially programming, data structures, algorithms, and coding practice.
- Practice explaining and coding. Solve problems without IDE dependence; clarify requirements, write syntactically correct code, and test edge cases.
- Try the official sample challenge. Get comfortable with the assessment environment before the actual online assessment.
- Add SDE II design practice where applicable. Practice clarifying requirements and discussing practicality, accuracy, efficiency, reliability, optimization, and scalability.
- Prepare behavioral examples. Select specific experiences that demonstrate relevant Leadership Principles and organize them with STAR.
