To recover PostgreSQL on Amazon RDS, restore automated backups to a point in time or restore a manual snapshot; both create a new DB instance rather than rolling back the existing one. For a regional disaster, automated backup replication must have been enabled in advance, and recovery can lag behind the source. Validate the new instance’s settings and data before redirecting application traffic.

Choose the right recovery method

Start by deciding how precise the recovery point must be, how long it must be retained, and whether the original AWS Region is available. AWS describes point-in-time recovery (PITR) as restoring to any second within the backup retention period. Automated backup retention is configurable from 1 to 35 days, according to the Amazon RDS Getting Started Guide; check the configured retention on your instance rather than assuming the maximum is enabled.

Method Restore point and retention Region scope Best fit
Automated backup PITR Choose a time within the configured retention window; AWS states a configurable range of 1–35 days. AWS Getting Started Guide Same Region by default Recovering to a recent time before accidental deletion, corruption, or an unwanted change.
Manual DB snapshot A user-selected restore point that remains until explicitly deleted. Can be copied to another Region. Preserving a known-good state before a planned change or duplicating an environment.
Cross-Region automated backup replication Replicated snapshots and transaction logs support a latest or custom restore time; replication is asynchronous. Destination Region, if replication is configured and the Region pair supports the engine. Recovering when the source Region is unavailable or a regional recovery capability is required.

For a recent, precise recovery in the same Region, automated PITR is usually the appropriate starting point. Choose a manual snapshot when you need a deliberately retained state. Cross-Region backup replication is a disaster-recovery design choice, not an option to switch on after the outage; verify support for both Regions and PostgreSQL using AWS’s supported Regions and engines matrix.

Understand what recovery time and data loss to expect

Same-Region PITR lets you select a recovery timestamp inside the backup retention period, but that precision is not a promise of zero data loss if an entire Region fails. Cross-Region automated backup replication is asynchronous, so the destination’s latest available recovery point may trail the source.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

AWS Prescriptive Guidance estimates an underlying RPO of 5–30 minutes for cross-Region PITR replication and says recovery can take up to a few hours while a snapshot is restored and archived transaction logs are applied. These are AWS planning estimates, not guarantees for a particular database, Region pair, or workload; actual recovery time depends on the restore and log-application process. See AWS Prescriptive Guidance on Amazon RDS PITR snapshot replication.

RPO describes how much recent data might be missing at recovery; RTO describes how long service restoration may take. Set targets for both, then test the restore and application cutover in the destination Region so the targets reflect your own data volume and configuration.

Restore to a point in time in the same Region

Before starting, identify the correct DB instance and the time to which you want to recover. In the RDS console, open Automated backups, select the DB instance, choose Actions, then Restore to point in time. Select the latest restorable time or specify a custom time. The operation launches a separate DB instance; it does not overwrite the source. AWS documents console, CLI, and API restore options in its point-in-time restore guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the recovery window. Confirm the instance, its backup retention, and the earliest and latest restorable times. The requested time must be within the retention window and earlier than LatestRestorableTime. The RestoreDBInstanceToPointInTime API reference describes the relevant restore parameters.
  2. Choose PITR and enter the target. In Automated backups, select the instance, choose Actions → Restore to point in time, then select the latest restorable time or enter the intended custom timestamp.
  3. Set restore options. Choose a new DB instance identifier and review the instance class, storage, and other available settings. AWS recommends using the same or a similar instance class and IOPS; incompatible choices can cause an error. Allocated storage cannot be reduced, and when an increase is allowed it must be at least 10 percent. Details are in the restore guide.
  4. Wait for the new instance and validate it. Do not send production traffic to it until configuration and data checks are complete.
  5. Cut over deliberately. Update application connection settings or the relevant endpoint configuration only after validation, and monitor application behavior after traffic moves.

Restore a manual snapshot

Use a manual snapshot when the desired recovery point is a specific saved state rather than a timestamp chosen from automated backup history. In the RDS console, open Snapshots, select the DB snapshot, and choose the restore action. The snapshot restore creates a new DB instance. Manual snapshots persist until explicitly deleted, and AWS supports copying snapshots to another Region; see Backing up and restoring your DB instance.

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

As with PITR, keep the original isolated from application cutover until you have confirmed the restored data, configuration, and access path. A snapshot gives you its captured state, not a later timestamp within a transaction-log recovery window.

Recover in another Region

Cross-Region recovery depends on preparation. Enable automated backup replication before an incident, select a destination Region, and confirm that AWS supports the source/destination Region pair for RDS for PostgreSQL. RDS replicates snapshots and transaction logs; after replication is active, restore from the destination’s replicated backups using a latest or custom restore time. Follow AWS’s instructions for enabling cross-Region automated backups and restoring from replicated backups.

Validate the restored instance before cutover

A successful restore does not guarantee that the new instance matches every operational setting of the source. The API reference says most original configuration is retained, but defaults can include a system-selected Availability Zone, the default security group, default DB subnet group, and default DB parameter group. Review the restored instance against your intended setup using the API reference and the restore guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Network and access: verify VPC/subnet placement, security groups, Availability Zone expectations, routing, and client reachability.
  • Database configuration: check the parameter group, engine settings, instance class, storage, and IOPS against the production requirement.
  • Data correctness: inspect application-critical records and confirm the recovered timestamp is appropriate for the incident.
  • Application connection: verify credentials and connection settings, then make the endpoint or configuration change as a deliberate cutover.
  • Operations: confirm monitoring, alerting, backups, and other operational controls are enabled as intended on the restored instance.

Protect recovery options when deleting or maintaining an instance

If you delete the source instance, decide explicitly whether to retain its automated backups. AWS notes that automated backups can otherwise be deleted with the instance; manual snapshots are independent. Also, automated backups require the DB instance to be in the available state and are not taken while it is in another state such as storage_full. See AWS’s introduction to backups.

These details matter during an incident: deleting a damaged instance without choosing backup retention may remove a recovery path, while assuming that an unhealthy or non-available instance continued producing automated backups can leave a gap in the recovery window.
