The Amazon ransomware warning is about an Interlock campaign targeting Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center (FMC)—not an attack on Amazon’s retail marketplace or AWS. Amazon Threat Intelligence reported that attackers began exploiting a critical Cisco vulnerability on January 26, 2026, before Cisco publicly disclosed it on March 4. Organizations that run FMC should check Cisco’s current advisory for affected versions and fixed releases, apply the appropriate patch, and review the indicators in Amazon’s report.

What is the Amazon ransomware threat?

Amazon Threat Intelligence reported an active Interlock ransomware campaign exploiting CVE-2026-20131 in Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center software. Amazon said its investigation found exploitation beginning January 26, 2026—36 days before Cisco’s March 4 public disclosure. The report, published March 18, attributes its investigation to activity observed through Amazon’s MadPot honeypot network. Read Amazon Threat Intelligence’s campaign report.

According to Amazon, the vulnerability could allow an unauthenticated remote attacker to execute arbitrary Java code as root on an affected device. Amazon described HTTP requests that attempted Java code execution and used URLs to deliver exploit configuration data and confirm successful exploitation. After analysts simulated the expected confirmation request, Amazon observed the attacker infrastructure issue commands to retrieve and execute a malicious Linux ELF binary. The same host, the report says, distributed campaign tooling and stored artifacts associated with individual targets.

Am I affected?

The relevant question is whether your organization runs an affected version of Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center. The Amazon report does not name affected software versions or exact fixed releases. Check AWS Security Bulletins only for AWS advisories; for this Cisco vulnerability, use Cisco’s current security advisory and follow its version-specific instructions. Do not assume a device is safe or vulnerable based on the product name alone.

  • FMC in use: Have your network or security administrator compare the installed version with Cisco’s advisory and confirm whether a fixed release is available and installed.
  • No FMC in use: This particular campaign report does not establish exposure through Amazon’s store or AWS services. Continue to assess other security risks separately.
  • AWS environment also in use: Treat AWS account and workload security as a separate assessment. AWS monitoring or response resources do not replace patching FMC.

What should an organization do now?

  1. Identify FMC deployments and versions. Ask the firewall or network administrator to inventory Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center instances and record their installed software versions.
  2. Check Cisco’s live advisory. Confirm whether each installed version is affected and which fixed release applies. The Amazon report does not state patch numbers or affected-version ranges.
  3. Apply the applicable Cisco security patch promptly. Amazon’s recommendation is for organizations running FMC to immediately apply Cisco’s security patches. Follow Cisco’s supported upgrade and change-control guidance.
  4. Review Amazon’s report for indicators. Compare the report’s indicators with available network, endpoint, and firewall-management telemetry. An indicator match merits investigation; by itself it does not prove that a system was compromised.
  5. Investigate suspicious activity. If review reveals possible exploitation or execution, use your organization’s incident-response process to preserve relevant logs and evidence, assess scope, and contain affected systems.

How does this differ from AWS ransomware guidance?

This campaign targets Cisco firewall management software. AWS’s guidance about ransomware affecting objects in Amazon S3 addresses a different threat model, including incidents involving exposed IAM access keys or vulnerable workloads with permissions. That article covers detection, response, recovery, and protection for S3 data; it is not a mitigation guide for CVE-2026-20131. Read AWS’s S3 ransomware guidance.

Amazon GuardDuty is an AWS threat-detection service that monitors AWS data sources and logs and can identify activity such as data exfiltration and destruction that may lead to ransomware. AWS’s documentation does not say that GuardDuty detects or prevents this Cisco FMC campaign. It is one part of AWS-environment monitoring, not a substitute for applying Cisco’s patch. AWS says its Customer Incident Response Team is a 24/7 global team that supports customers during active events on the customer side of the AWS Shared Responsibility Model. That resource may be relevant to an AWS-side security event; AWS’s description does not establish that the team handles this Cisco firewall campaign.
