For U.S. shoppers, Prime is most valuable when the delivery, grocery, and deal benefits you actually use are worth more than your membership cost. Non-Prime customers can still shop Amazon and, where available, order grocery delivery; the practical comparison is your local checkout fees and shopping habits against your applicable Prime price.
What Prime costs in the U.S.
Amazon lists standard U.S. Prime at $14.99 per month or $139 per year in 2026. The annual plan costs less than 12 monthly payments, but only if you are comfortable paying upfront and expect to keep using the membership.

Amazon also lists lower-cost options for eligible customers: young adults and higher-education students can receive a six-month trial, then pay $7.49 monthly or $69 yearly; qualifying recipients of government assistance can get Prime Access for $6.99 monthly. Amazon says Prime includes free delivery on millions of eligible items, with delivery options such as One-Day, Two-Day, Same-Day, Amazon Day, and standard delivery. The item, order conditions, and delivery address determine which options apply. Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico have separate terms, so do not assume the same speed or availability as in the contiguous United States. See Amazon’s shipping benefits and terms.

Amazon reports that Prime shipping covers more than 300 million U.S. items across more than 35 categories. Those are Amazon’s own figures, not an independent count; the useful question for an individual shopper is whether the products they buy are eligible and whether the included delivery options are worth the fee they would otherwise pay.
Grocery delivery is available without Prime, but fees vary
A Prime membership is not a blanket requirement for Amazon grocery delivery. Amazon lists distinct grocery services—including Whole Foods Market, Amazon Fresh, Amazon Now, and local grocery partners—with their own availability, fees, and conditions. Check the options for your address and basket rather than assuming one fee applies across them.

For one specific example, Amazon lists free Prime Same-Day grocery delivery on orders of at least $25 in most areas, $2.99 for smaller orders, and $12.99 for non-Prime Same-Day grocery delivery. These are service-specific U.S. examples, not universal grocery rates. Your address and order determine what appears at checkout. Amazon’s grocery delivery information has details.

Deals count only when they lower spending on planned purchases
Amazon describes Prime access to shopping events and Lightning Deals, along with rotating discounts at Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market. A discount is not automatically a saving: count it only when the product qualifies, the price is genuinely better for you, and it is something you already intended to buy. Treat deals you would not otherwise purchase as extra spending, not membership value.

Keep payment-card rewards separate from the membership
Amazon mentions 5% back on purchases made with the Prime Visa. That reward is tied to a separate payment card, not automatically included with every Prime membership. Card eligibility and current issuer terms apply; verify them before including card rewards in your calculation. Amazon’s Prime Visa information is separate from the membership benefits.

- Choose the price that applies to you. Use the standard or eligible discounted membership rate and compare monthly with annual pricing on the current Amazon page.
- Look at your recent eligible orders. Note how often you would otherwise pay for delivery, and whether Prime’s available speed or delivery-day options would change your decision.
- Check grocery checkout at your address. Compare the actual fees and order thresholds for your usual service and basket, including what non-Prime checkout offers.
- Count realistic deal savings. Include only discounts on qualifying items you planned to buy; leave out speculative savings and card rewards unless you separately qualify for the card.
- Compare the total with the membership fee. If the delivery costs avoided and genuine discounts you value exceed your applicable fee, Prime may make sense for shopping. If not, staying non-Prime may be the better fit.
Amazon’s pages establish the benefits and fees it advertises, but they cannot determine an individual shopper’s net savings. Prices, thresholds, delivery availability, and terms can change; use the amount shown for your account, address, and basket when making the comparison.
