Amazon.com in the US says it does not price match. Its official Exchange an Item page does not promise a general refund when an item’s price falls after purchase. It does describe a narrower case: when an eligible exchange is for a lower-priced item, Amazon says it refunds the difference.
Does Amazon refund the difference if a price drops?
Not as a general post-purchase price adjustment, according to Amazon’s US customer help page. The page states, “Amazon does not price match.” That means a lower price after you order does not, by itself, establish a right to have the original order repriced.
Amazon’s stated price-difference refund applies to a specific exchange: if you exchange an item for a lower-priced item, Amazon says it refunds the difference. This is not the same as keeping the original item and asking Amazon to refund a later sale-price drop.

Check the options and return-by date shown for your order. Amazon’s help page describes two routes, depending on eligibility and what appears in Your Orders:

- Exchange for a lower-priced replacement: If the order offers an exchange and the replacement qualifies, start the exchange through the order. Amazon says it refunds the difference when the exchange item costs less.
- Return and reorder: If no exchange option is available—or the item was a gift—Amazon directs customers to return the original and place a new order. This depends on the order’s return eligibility and displayed return-by date; compare the current price and any applicable terms before choosing.
Amazon’s exchange page says items purchased with a promotion do not qualify for exchange, and exchanges are available only for orders paid for with a credit or debit card. The options displayed for your particular order are the practical guide to whether you can proceed.
How to check for an exchange in Your Orders
- Open Amazon’s Exchange an Item guidance and go to Your Orders.
- For the relevant order, choose Return or replace items.
- Select a reason and follow the on-screen instructions. If Amazon offers an eligible exchange for a lower-priced item, the help page says the difference is refunded.
- If there is no exchange option, check the order’s return-by date and return eligibility. Amazon’s guidance says to return the original and place a new order when an exchange is unavailable.
Why the order date matters—and what it does not mean
Amazon’s Dash Terms of Use describe the amount charged for a Dash order as based on the product price when the order is placed, adjusted for applicable discounts, sales tax, and shipping-related charges. That is useful context for how a particular order’s price is determined; it is not a general price-adjustment promise for all Amazon purchases.

Other Amazon pricing rules serve different purposes. The US Marketplace Fair Pricing Policy addresses sellers’ responsibility for setting prices and Amazon’s monitoring and potential enforcement. It does not give shoppers a price-match right. Likewise, Amazon Business’s Subscribe & Save terms, last updated November 29, 2022, say subscription delivery prices can fluctuate and that customers are notified of the next delivery price before it is filled, with an opportunity to change or cancel. Those terms concern a business subscription, not a general refund after a consumer purchase.

Amazon Seller Forums has also described seller-side reference-price changes for 2026, including a 90-day period used in a Was Price calculation. That period concerns how a seller-facing reference price is calculated; it is not a window for customers to claim a price adjustment.
