Amazon says its shopping recommendations can draw on purchase history, Alexa for Shopping conversations, product reviews, Lists and searches. It also says shopping activity informs recommendations across the homepage and the shopping journey. That is useful disclosure about Amazon’s own approach, but it does not establish that Amazon’s suggestions are better, more personalized or more privacy-invasive than those of other retailers. A fair comparison requires comparable disclosures, controls and performance evidence for each retailer—evidence that is not established here.

The practical distinction is between what a retailer says it uses, what a shopper can inspect or change, and whether recommendations demonstrably help people find suitable products. Those are related questions, but the answer to one does not settle the others. Amazon’s About You feature and privacy notice offer some information about its own experience; they do not provide a complete map of every recommendation signal or a like-for-like comparison with another store.

How does Amazon decide what to recommend?

Amazon describes shopping personalization as using several kinds of customer activity: purchases, conversations with Alexa for Shopping, product reviews, Lists and searches. It says that shopping activity informs personalized recommendations on the homepage and throughout the shopping journey, and describes personalized deals and emails as part of that experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are Amazon’s descriptions of its practices, not an independently audited or exhaustive inventory of every signal, model or rule involved. They do not tell customers how much weight each activity receives, how long it remains influential, or exactly why a particular item appeared in a particular place. The descriptions also do not establish that every listed activity is used for every customer, every recommendation row or every marketplace.

  • Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
  • Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.

Recommendation rows can serve different purposes. A suggestion tailored to an account, a product related to the page currently being viewed, a popular item and an answer generated during a conversational shopping interaction are not interchangeable. A recommendation label alone does not reveal which method produced a particular result. To compare experiences, identify the type of recommendation and the page or app surface where it appears.

Amazon’s company description characterizes its recommendations as being informed by a customer’s shopping activity and says personalized product descriptions can be made more relevant to customers. This is Amazon’s account of its product experience, not a published test showing that the descriptions or recommendations improve decisions. In practical terms, a more relevant presentation may help a shopper notice an option, but shoppers still need to evaluate the actual product information and decide whether it meets their needs.

Amazon has also described Help Me Decide as an AI feature that can provide product recommendations tailored to a customer’s needs after browsing several similar items. Daniel Lloyd, identified in Amazon’s announcement as vice president of personalization, said the feature is intended to save time and give shoppers confidence in a purchase decision. That statement explains the company’s intended use of the feature; it is not independent evidence that it saves time or improves decision quality for every shopper. It is also a distinct conversational or decision-support experience, not proof about how every standard recommendation row is generated.

What can shoppers inspect or change?

About You

Amazon has described About You as a feature where customers can review and edit preference details used to personalize shopping recommendations. It may help a shopper understand or adjust some of the preferences Amazon uses. It should not be treated as a complete view of every piece of account data, every signal used for recommendations, or the logic behind each suggestion.

Feature availability and the way it is presented can vary by marketplace, app version and product surface. The announcement does not establish one universal menu path for every customer. Look for About You in the Amazon shopping experience available to your account and region; if the feature is not present, do not assume that a similarly named setting controls the same things.

When using a preference-editing feature, distinguish between correcting a preference that is displayed and removing all activity that might inform recommendations. About You is described as a way to review and edit preference details. That description does not say it lets customers inspect the complete data history behind an account, see every signal that affects a particular suggestion, or delete all shopping activity. If your goal is to manage a specific kind of history or data use, read the relevant control’s own description rather than assuming that editing a preference covers it.

Browsing history and privacy settings

Amazon’s privacy notice discusses recommendation-related information, including recently viewed products that may be the basis for recommendations. It also describes settings for certain data uses and personalized advertising. Those are distinct categories: a setting that limits personalized advertising should not be assumed to turn off product recommendations, erase browsing history, or prevent all shopping personalization.

Before changing a control, read its description and scope in the marketplace you use. Check whether it concerns browsing history, recommendations, advertising, or another data use. The available information does not establish a single control that disables every type of Amazon shopping recommendation.

A useful way to approach settings is to start with the outcome you want. If you want to change a preference, look for a preference-review or editing feature such as About You where available. If you want to manage recently viewed items, look for a browsing-history control and check what it says will happen to those items. If you want to limit personalized advertising, use the relevant advertising setting and do not interpret it as a product-recommendation switch. The names and scope of controls can differ, so the wording in the account and marketplace you actually use matters more than a general description.

These distinctions are important because a retailer can use shopping activity in more than one context. A shopper may see product recommendations, personalized offers, email content and advertising, but those experiences should not be presumed to share one setting or one underlying purpose. Amazon’s privacy notice describes certain settings and recommendation-related browsing information; it does not support treating all personalization as one feature controlled by one universal opt-out.

What the technical documentation does—and does not—show

Amazon Personalize is an AWS service that developers can use to build recommendation systems. Its documentation explains general recommender concepts, including interaction data and item metadata, recent events that can affect recommendations in supported use cases, and filters that exclude items or constrain results. This describes what a retailer-built system using the service may do. It is not evidence that Amazon.com’s retail recommendations use Amazon Personalize or the same implementation.

The service’s documentation also explains why a recommendation should not be read as a quality verdict. For some recipes, a score is a relative estimate of how likely a user is to interact with an item. Exploration can introduce items that would otherwise be less likely to appear, while filters can change which items are returned. A highly placed or suggested product is therefore not necessarily the best product, the best value, or a guarantee of fit for a shopper’s needs.

Those concepts help explain why the visible list may not simply be a ranked list of the objectively “best” products. A model score, where one is used, describes an estimate tied to a particular system and objective; it is not a universal rating of usefulness or quality. Exploration can also serve a system’s recommendation process by putting less-obvious items into view, and filters can restrict the set of eligible results. The result a shopper sees may therefore reflect more than a straightforward ordering by predicted interest. These are features described for the AWS service, not confirmed details of Amazon.com’s own consumer implementation.

For developers evaluating an Amazon Personalize solution, the documentation defines measures such as coverage and mean reciprocal rank and recommends using both offline and online evaluation, including A/B testing. These are evaluation concepts for the service, not published results comparing Amazon’s retail site with other retailers.

  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

The broader lesson for shoppers is to separate the question “Why did this item appear?” from “Is this a good product for me?” A recommendation may be relevant to browsing activity, related to the item currently being viewed, or surfaced for another reason. None of those possibilities, by itself, verifies quality, value, availability, suitability or an independent endorsement. Check product specifications, seller and listing details, price and other decision-relevant information directly.

Can we say Amazon’s recommendations are better than other retailers’?

No reliable ranking follows from the available retailer-specific evidence. It does not provide a comparable official account of the standard product recommendation feeds and customer controls at other online retailers, nor a common performance study across them. A claim that Amazon is more accurate, more personalized, more transparent or more invasive would go beyond what is established.

The gap matters because a visible recommendation is not itself a measure of quality. Retailers could be showing different kinds of suggestions, using different account states, or optimizing for different outcomes. Without a shared test and comparable disclosures, a difference in what appears on screen cannot establish which system performs better.

A credible quality comparison would need to define the outcome—such as whether a shopper finds a relevant item or completes a useful purchase—and apply the same method to each retailer. Ideally, it would include randomized online evaluation and clearly state the region, dates, surfaces, account conditions and metrics. No comparative accuracy percentage, conversion lift or privacy ranking is established here.

It is also important not to treat the lack of a comparable public disclosure as proof that another retailer does not personalize recommendations or offer controls. It means only that a like-for-like claim cannot be made on the basis of the descriptions at hand. For any named competitor, check that retailer’s own current explanations and account controls in the specific country and app or website being compared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same caution applies to privacy comparisons. An advertising preference, a browsing-history option and a recommendation-preference editor can have different scopes. Counting settings or comparing menu labels would not establish which retailer gives shoppers more meaningful control unless the controls’ effects were examined and compared on equivalent terms. A sound comparison should describe the actual function of each setting and avoid calling one a complete recommendation opt-out unless the retailer says that it is.

A practical way to compare recommendation experiences

You can make a structured personal comparison without treating it as a scientific ranking. Keep the country, device, shopping task and account state as consistent as possible, and distinguish what each retailer explicitly discloses from what you infer by looking at the screen.

  1. Choose one shopping task and comparable surfaces. For example, look for the same type of item on each retailer’s homepage or product page. Record the country, date, device or app, whether you are signed in, and which surface you are comparing. Do not compare a personalized homepage row with a bestseller list and call the difference an algorithmic advantage. If one retailer has no equivalent surface, record that limitation rather than forcing a comparison.
  2. Classify the recommendation. Note whether the retailer labels it as tailored to you, related to the item being viewed, popular, a deal, or a response to a shopping conversation. If the source is not identified, record it as unknown rather than guessing. A label may tell you the stated category, but it need not explain every signal or ranking rule behind the item.
  3. Check what the retailer says informs it. Look for disclosures about purchases, searches, viewed products, lists, reviews or other activity. Mark disclosed signals separately from your own inference. Amazon’s stated inputs include purchases, Alexa for Shopping conversations, reviews, Lists and searches; equivalent information for another retailer must be verified from that retailer’s own disclosures.
  4. Inspect relevant controls. Check whether the retailer offers a way to review or edit recommendation preferences, remove browsing-history items, or adjust recommendation settings. Record what the control says it affects. Keep advertising preferences separate from product-recommendation controls. Note whether the control is available in the same country and on the same kind of account or surface.
  5. Test a documented change, if available. Change one preference or history setting, then revisit the same kind of surface under similar conditions. Note whether the suggestions change and how long it takes. This is a personal observation, not proof of general accuracy or causation: other activity, page context and system variation may also influence results. Do not claim to know why the list changed unless the retailer explains it.
  6. Separate relevance from quality. Ask whether the item fits the task, then assess product details, price, availability and suitability independently. A recommendation is a suggestion, not an endorsement or a guarantee that it is the best choice. A result can be relevant to a browsing pattern and still not be right for the shopper’s budget or requirements.

For a useful record, write down the observation immediately and keep the comparison narrow. “This retailer showed two products related to the current item on its product page while signed in” is more precise than “this retailer understands me better.” Likewise, “the recommendations looked different after I edited this displayed preference” describes what happened without claiming that one change was the only cause.

A one-person test can help you decide which interface feels more useful for your own task, but it cannot establish how the systems perform for other customers. It also cannot identify every hidden factor that might affect a result. If your aim is a personal shopping choice, that limitation may be acceptable; if your aim is a general claim about retailer quality, you need comparable evidence and a defined evaluation method.

What to record in a retailer comparison

Question What to look for Amazon disclosure established here Other retailers
What activity informs suggestions? Purchases, searches, views, lists, reviews, conversations or other stated inputs Amazon says purchases, Alexa for Shopping conversations, reviews, Lists and searches contribute to shopping personalization. Not established by comparable retailer-specific disclosures here.
What kind of suggestion is shown? Account-personalized, item-related, popularity-based, deal-oriented or conversational Amazon describes personalized recommendations on the homepage and through the shopping journey, as well as personalized deals and emails. The source of every individual row is not specified. Not established by comparable retailer-specific disclosures here.
What controls can a customer use? Preference review or editing, history controls, recommendation settings and advertising settings Amazon describes About You for reviewing and editing preference details; its privacy notice also discusses recommendation-related browsing information and settings for certain data uses and personalized advertising. Not established by comparable retailer-specific disclosures here.
Can activity affect newer recommendations? Whether the retailer says recent activity can influence suggestions, and on which surfaces Amazon says shopping activity informs recommendations throughout the shopping journey. The public description does not specify the timing or weight of each input for every surface. Not established by comparable retailer-specific disclosures here.
How is recommendation quality measured? Comparable outcome definitions, metrics, test conditions and preferably randomized evaluation No comparative result for Amazon’s retail recommendations is established here. Amazon Personalize documentation discusses evaluation concepts for systems built with that AWS service. No comparable cross-retailer performance result is established here.

This framework is more useful than simply counting how many recommendations look relevant. It separates disclosure, user control and measured outcomes—three different questions that a retailer’s interface may not answer equally well. It also keeps a single observation in proportion: seeing a product is evidence of what appeared on that screen at that time, not evidence of the entire system’s quality or privacy impact.

What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you

A careful comparison can tell a shopper what Amazon publicly says about its shopping personalization, where Amazon says some preference details can be reviewed and edited, and how to distinguish recommendation controls from advertising settings. It can also help a shopper organize a personal test across similar tasks and surfaces. Those are practical findings even when no retailer ranking is possible.

It cannot reveal every model input or establish how the Amazon retail website is implemented internally. Amazon’s statements about its practices are not a complete technical specification. Nor does AWS documentation for Amazon Personalize fill that gap: the service is available to developers, but its capabilities are not proof that Amazon.com uses the same system.

For a direct Amazon-versus-another-retailer verdict, comparable evidence would need to cover the same country, dates, customer state and product surfaces. It would need to explain what each service means by a recommendation, what activity it discloses, what controls customers can use and how outcomes are tested. Until that basis exists, the most defensible conclusion is not that one retailer wins, but that shoppers should inspect the recommendation type, check the relevant settings and judge the product independently.

Can I change what Amazon recommends to me?

Amazon describes About You as a feature for reviewing and editing preference details used to personalize shopping recommendations. Availability and presentation can vary by marketplace, app version and product surface. Amazon does not describe it as a complete view of every account signal or a universal switch for all recommendations.

Does turning off personalized advertising stop Amazon product recommendations?

Do not assume so. Amazon’s privacy notice discusses settings for certain data uses and personalized advertising, as well as recommendation-related information such as recently viewed products. Advertising controls and product-recommendation controls are distinct; check the wording and scope of the particular setting.

Does Amazon use AWS Amazon Personalize for Amazon.com recommendations?

The AWS documentation describes Amazon Personalize as a service developers can use to build recommendation systems. That documentation does not establish that Amazon.com’s retail recommendations use the service or the same implementation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Amazon recommendations more accurate than recommendations from other retailers?

No comparable performance result is established here. A fair answer would require equivalent retailer disclosures and a shared test with clear outcomes, conditions and metrics—ideally including randomized online evaluation. A suggestion on a screen is not by itself proof of accuracy or product quality.

Why did a particular product appear in my recommendations?

Amazon says shopping activity can inform recommendations, but its public description does not explain the exact reason every item appears or the weight of each activity. Identify the surface and recommendation type, and treat the source as unknown if the interface does not say more.

The Bottom Line

Amazon says purchases, Alexa for Shopping conversations, reviews, Lists and searches can inform shopping personalization, and it describes About You as a way to review and edit some preference details. Its privacy notice distinguishes recommendation-related information from settings for personalized advertising. These disclosures do not establish a complete map of its recommendation system, and AWS Amazon Personalize documentation is not evidence of Amazon.com’s implementation. Without comparable retailer-specific disclosures and performance tests, there is no sound basis to rank Amazon against other online retailers. Compare equivalent surfaces and controls, and judge each suggested product on its own merits.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
