There is no universal winner between Amazon Leo (formerly Project Kuiper) and Starlink: compare service at your exact address, then weigh the full cost and equipment against your needs. Amazon announced a wider Leo rollout for 2026, but that plan does not mean service is available to order at every address. Starlink offers service plans in multiple markets, with options and performance varying by location and plan.

Is Amazon Kuiper the same as Amazon Leo?

Yes. Amazon retired the name “Project Kuiper” on November 13, 2025, and adopted Amazon Leo as the network’s permanent name. People searching for Kuiper are looking for the same satellite broadband project.

Leo is a network, not just a dish: Amazon describes satellites in low Earth orbit, customer terminals, gateway antennas, fiber, and ground-based internet connection points. Its initial constellation design includes more than 3,000 satellites at altitudes of 590–630 km, according to Amazon’s Leo overview.

Where are Amazon Leo and Starlink available?

Amazon Leo: announced rollout, not guaranteed local availability

Amazon says an enterprise preview began in November 2025 and that it plans to roll out service more widely during 2026 as it launches more satellites and adds network coverage and capacity. Amazon’s stated intention to serve most countries is an ambition, not proof of live coverage in any particular country or at a specific address. The rollout announcement does not establish that a household can order service now.

Starlink: check the service address and plan

Starlink’s official support information identifies local and global plans, but the available choices depend on the market. Starlink reported connecting more than 4.6 million new active customers and expanding service to 35 additional countries, territories, and other markets during 2025. Those are historical expansion figures, not a current availability map or confirmation that service can be ordered at your address.

For either provider, check the provider’s current country-specific availability and plan information before deciding. The evidence available here does not establish current eligibility country by country or at any individual address.

How does the equipment compare?

Amazon Leo terminals

Amazon lists three terminal options. The speeds below are manufacturer-published maximum specifications—not independently measured results or a guarantee of the rate a customer will experience.

Amazon’s terminal figures do not establish typical household performance, what a specific service plan will deliver, or a general-market purchase path for these products.

Starlink Kit

Starlink’s official specification describes its “Starlink Kit” as a user terminal, Wi-Fi router, power supply, and mount. Hardware availability and specifications can vary by region and equipment generation, so confirm the kit currently offered for your market. Starlink says performance varies with location, time of day, and the network priority associated with the service plan. The specification does not give a single performance figure that can be directly matched to Amazon’s advertised terminal maxima.

What should you compare before switching or signing up?

Use the same service address and requirements for both providers. A feature that matters for a fixed home connection may not decide a business or travel use case.

  1. Confirm address-level service. Check the exact service address and country using each provider’s current availability process. Do not treat a planned rollout or a past expansion statistic as proof that service is orderable.
  2. Match the plan to the use. Identify whether you need a fixed home connection, business or enterprise service, or connectivity while traveling. Compare the plans actually offered in your market and check their limits and data priority.
  3. Calculate the full first-year cost. Include the terminal or kit, recurring plan charges, shipping, taxes, installation, mounts, and any required accessories. The sources here do not establish current prices for a like-for-like comparison.
  4. Compare realistic performance, not headline maxima alone. Separate advertised maximum speeds from typical or observed results. Check upload and download needs, congestion and plan priority, and latency only where current, comparable information is available.
  5. Check installation and support terms. Verify what hardware and mounting parts are included, whether the installation suits your site, and the applicable warranty, support, and service terms.
  6. Consider portability and mobility. If you need service away from one fixed address, confirm that the plan permits your intended use and that it is available in the places you will travel.

Which service should you choose?

Choose based on what you can actually order at your location and what the complete setup costs—not on a general brand ranking. Starlink’s kit components and performance variability are documented in its official specifications, while Amazon’s Leo terminals have published speed ceilings but no independent results established here. For Amazon Leo, distinguish its announced rollout from service available to your address; for either option, verify local plans, equipment, installation, and terms before switching.
